Archived from NEWS+VIEWS page JULY 1, 2008 ------- AL-QA'EDA STYLE TERRORISTS PLANNING UK ATTACKS WITH AMBULANCES BOUGHT ON EBAY Terrorists may be planning to launch suicide bomb attacks in Britain using former NHS ambulances and police cars bought on auction website eBay, police chiefs have warned. The Association of Chief Police Officers said ministers must legislate to stop the sale of such vehicles amid fears that al-Qaeda inspired extremists may import a tactic already used in Iraq and Israel. Every year dozens of police cars, ambulances and fire engines are sold. Some are fully marked and can be bought for as little as £1,500. Counter-terrorism officials at the Home Office have now written to eBay, the internet auctioneer, asking it to stop selling emergency service vehicles, equipment and uniforms. However, eBay has said it will only self-regulate if a new law is passed. A report from the Joint Terrorism Analysis Center, sent to chief constables, highlights recent attacks by Al-Qaeda in Iraq and Israel, including one in February in which a suicide bomber drove a stolen ambulance packed with explosives into an Iraqi police station. The bomber tried to break through a checkpoint but the vehicle exploded when police opened fire. The report says terrorists have been using ambulances to transport bombs in Israel since at least 2002. It cites a report by the Israeli Defense Forces that Palestinian terrorists have used ambulances to ferry recruits and equipment around the West Bank. Archived from NEWS+VIEWS page JUNE 23, 2008 ------- REPORT: AL-QAEDA RECRUITING WHITE EUROPEANS Citing US intelligence sources, News reported that dozens of white Europeans have trained in terrorist camps in Pakistan's tribal regions in recent months, in what officials fear may be the beginnings of a new breed of al-Qaeda-affiliated terrorism. Government officials suspect the terrorists, recruited in Europe, have been dispatched to plan attacks against Europe and possibly the United States. The alleged terrorists hail from Britain, the Netherlands, Denmark, Germany, Romania and Estonia, sources said. Intelligence officials claim the remote tribal areas along the border between Pakistan and Afghanistan have in the last several years become a haven for terrorist recruiting and training. Hundreds of radicals from across the region have flocked to al-Qaeda training camps in the area. In interviews with News and in a series of little-noticed public statements and reports, intelligence officials have said they believe al-Qaeda has successfully completed a major goal: recruiting and training Western would-be terrorists. ‘Al-Qaeda is improving the last key aspect of its ability to attack the US: The identification, training and positioning of operatives for an attack in the Homeland,’ according to a February Threat Assessment report from the Director of National Intelligence. ‘We have seen an influx of new Western recruits into the tribal area since mid-2006,’ the report said. Those Western recruits are thought to be more difficult to detect and able to easily enter Europe and the US and blend in with Western culture. ‘They're recruiting operatives from Europe. Why? If you're from Europe, it doesn't require a visa to fly to the United States,’ Mike McConnell, the director of National Intelligence, said in a speech in March. ‘So if you can get a disgruntled person in Europe to come to Pakistan to be trained in how to buy something commercially – hydrogen peroxide – and use it in a particular way, you could have mass casualties in the United States greater than 9/11,’ he said The Last Days Signs - The End Times - Are Upon The Earth!
Archived from NEWS+VIEWS page JUNE 20, 2008 ------- HEZBOLLAH SLEEPER CELLS MAY BE ACTIVE IN CANADA: REPORT Disturbing ‘chatter’ picked up recently by intelligence agencies about attacks against Jewish targets by Canadian-linked supporters of Hezbollah has prompted an alert to Canada's Jewish community urging added caution. Anti-terrorism officials, however, are officially downplaying a startling U.S. news report that says the banned terrorist organization, which is backed by Iran, has activated four suspected ‘sleeper cells’ in Canada and that a known Hezbollah weapons expert was followed here and seen at a firing range south of Toronto. An ABC News report on Thursday said three U.S. law enforcement agencies confirmed being briefed on the developments. ‘Suspected Hezbollah operatives have conducted recent surveillance on the Israeli embassy in Ottawa, Canada, and on several synagogues in Toronto, according to the officials,’ according to the ABC report. The report says one of the cells is known as ‘Rashedan’ and that cell members have been told to send their family members home to Lebanon. Over the past week, the National Post has been investigating its own reports of an intelligence-led investigation of Hezbollah activities in Canada, including activity focused on the Ontario border cities of Windsor and Niagara Falls. Those under suspicion include men who were overseas in the summer of 2006 to fight with Hezbollah during the renewed conflict with Israel in Lebanon. There has indeed been chatter -- references to various bits of intelligence picked up by various security sources -- that attacks should be carried out against Jewish targets in Canada and abroad, the Post has learned. The Jewish communities in Toronto and Rome were mentioned as possible or desirable targets. That does not mean an attack is imminent or a specific attack has been mapped out. Archived from NEWS+VIEWS page JUNE 11, 2008 ------- 'LONE WOLF' TERROR THREAT ON RISE, REPORT WARNS A newly declassified Canadian intelligence report is warning about the emerging threat posed by ‘lone wolf’ Islamist terrorists who operate completely on their own. Terrorists inspired by al-Qaeda have, in the past, tended to work in cells, but the report says they are beginning to use the solo strategy once associated with the militant far right. ‘Lone wolves motivated by Islamist extremism are a recent development,’ it says. ‘Islamist terrorist strategists are now advocating that Muslims take action at a grassroots level, without waiting for instructions.’ It adds that lone wolf Islamist extremist attacks and conspiracies ‘seem to be on the increase’ and that ‘several such cases have been recorded since 9/11’ although the list of examples appears to have been censored from the report. The report, ‘Lone-Wolf Attacks: A Developing Islamist Extremist Strategy?’ was written by the Canadian government's Integrated Threat Assessment Center. A copy of the intelligence assessment was obtained by the National Post under the Access to Information Act, but parts of it were cut out by government officials. A lone wolf is inspired by a terrorist cause but takes action independently. Lone wolves are difficult to identify because they do not join terrorist groups or associate with other known extremists. The phenomenon is being linked to the Internet. ‘The Internet has become an important catalyst for homegrown extremists, including lone wolves, by providing ideological motivation, encouragement, justification, target information and instruction on techniques, all in an anonymous environment,’ the report says. The change in strategy may be a result of successful counter terrorism efforts: As more plots are being detected by security agencies, terrorists are being forced to operate in greater isolation. But we will not be relieved of this responsibility,’ bin Laden said in the audio message posted on an Islamic militant Web site where al-Qaida leaders issue their statements. Al-Aqsa mosque in Jerusalem's Old City is one of the holiest sites for Muslims. Israel and Egypt have closed their borders with Gaza since the Islamic militant group Hamas violently seized control of the Palestinian territory in June of last year. The closure has deepened economic hardship in the already impoverished strip where 1.4 million Palestinians live. ‘Each one of us is responsible for the death of our vulnerable people in Gaza where scores have died because of the blockade,’ bin Laden said. He urged Muslim militants in Egypt to try to end the closure. His remarks coincided with the arrival of U.S. President George W. Bush in the Middle East to celebrate Israel's 60th birthday and try to energize peace efforts complicated by a corruption scandal that could topple Prime Minister Ehud Olmert. Opposition to Israel is a fundamental principle in Shi'ite Muslim Iran, which backs Palestinian militants opposed to peace talks. ‘The Zionist regime is dying,’ Ahmadinejad said in a speech in the northern city of Gorgan, referring to Israel. ‘The criminals imagine that by holding celebrations... they can save the Zionist regime from death.’ ‘They should know that regional nations hate this fake and criminal regime and if the smallest and briefest chance is given to regional nations they will destroy [it],’ said Ahmadinejad, who often rails against Israel and the United States. A 2005 statement by Ahmadinejad saying that ‘Israel should be wiped off the map’ outraged the international community. On Tuesday, he said that Israel would ‘be soon swept away’ by the Palestinians. Last month, a senior Iranian army commander said Iran will respond to any military attack from Israel by ‘eliminating’ it, in comments condemned by Washington ............................. INDIA BRACES FOR SURGE IN TERROR The serial blasts that killed 80 people and injured 200 in the western Indian city of Jaipur on Tuesday occurred less than a week after a major infiltration attempt by militants was thwarted on the international border with Pakistan in Jammu and Kashmir state. That incident set off a heavy exchange of fire along the border, the first major flare-up since an India-Pakistan ceasefire took effect in 2003. Intelligence contacts have told Asia Times Online that while there is ‘no direct cause-effect link’ between the incidents on the border and the Jaipur blasts, the former indicate that ‘infiltration from across the border in Pakistan will increase as summer progresses and more attacks like the ones at Jaipur can be expected’. The contacts point out that in a week from now, Indian Foreign Minister Pranab Mukherjee goes to the Pakistani capital Islamabad for his first interaction with the new government there. The ‘composite dialogue’ between the countries, in cold storage for several months, will be revived. The possibility of elements in Pakistan's Inter-Services Intelligence (ISI) seeking to disrupt this process with terror attacks in India cannot be ruled out. The ISI is known to have acted in the past to weaken initiatives by democratic governments in Pakistan to normalize relations with India. The department's annual Country Reports on Terrorism also names Iran as the biggest state sponsor of terrorism. There were 14,499 attacks in 2007, the report says, down from 14,570 in 2006. Attacks in Iraq were also down, from 6,628 to 6,212, although in Afghanistan the number of incidents rose from 969 in 2006 to 1,127 in 2007. Although overall attacks were down slightly, the number of terror-related deaths rose by 8% to 22,000 in 2007. ‘The ability of [Iraqi] attackers to penetrate large concentrations of people and then detonate their explosives may account for the increase in lethality of bombings in 2007,’ said the report. In Iraq, Afghanistan and elsewhere, according to the report, al-Qaeda remains ‘the greatest terrorist threat to the United States and its partners’. Al-Qaeda ‘utilises terrorism, as well as subversion, propaganda, and open warfare; it seeks weapons of mass destruction in order to inflict the maximum possible damage on anyone who stands in its way, including other Muslims and/or elders, women and children,’ the report says. And the militant group has rebuilt some of its pre-9/11 operational capacity at secret bases in Pakistan, the report's authors warn, with deputy leader Ayman al-Zawahiri now acting as the group's ‘strategic and operational planner’. Iran remains the ‘most active’ state sponsor of terrorism, according to the report, and has lent its support to Palestinian militants, as well as insurgents in Afghanistan and Iraq. Elements of the Iranian Revolutionary Guard Corps have provided militants in Iraq with arms, training and money, the report says. The other state sponsors of terrorism listed in the report are Cuba, North Korea, Sudan and Syria ................................ Global terror increasing, says US state department More than half of all terrorist deaths during 2007 occurred in Iraq and the world suffered an overall increase in terrorist deaths, partly due to rises in violence in Afghanistan and Pakistan as well as Iraq, the US state department said today. In its annual counter terrorism report, the US state department said the number of people killed or injured in terrorist attacks jumped to 67,000 in 2007, up from 59,000 the year before. About 60% of those occurred in Iraq. The number of terrorist attacks in 2007 was roughly flat compared to 2006, indicating that terrorist organizations are become more adept at their deadly craft. "Around the globe, people are getting increasingly efficient at killing other people," said Russ Travers, deputy director of the national counter terrorism center. His grim assessment was made Monday after the death of Australian Lance Corporal Jason Marks. The 27-year-old Special Forces soldier died during an attack by militants in southern Afghanistan, where the majority of Australia's one thousand troops are based. Five Australian soldiers have been killed in Afghanistan since 2002, and Mr. Rudd says it is likely that there will be more casualties. ‘This is a sad day for the nation,’ Mr. Rudd said. ‘It is a sad day for the Australian Defense Force. It is a tragic day for the family. 2008 will be difficult and dangerous and bloody, and the Australian nation needs to prepare itself for further losses.’ Army chiefs warn that Afghanistan is entering its so-called fighting period, when the melting of winter snow heralds an increase in activity by Taliban and al-Qaeda extremists. Mr. Rudd says Canberra remains committed to the U.S.-led campaign against the Taliban but has no plans to increase its military presence in Afghanistan. Interpol Secretary-General Ronald Noble warned Friday Olympic organizers must be prepared for the possibility that al-Qaida or some other terrorist group will launch a deadly attack for the media exposure of billions of people watching. Noble made his remarks at an international conference in Beijing on the Games' security. The Interpol chief also said worldwide protests during the Olympic torch relay have made the issue of safety and security at the event an even greater priority, not just for China, but for all athletes and visitors. Earlier this month, Chinese authorities said they broke up two terrorist plots to carry out attacks and abductions to wreck the Beijing Olympic Games. China says the two groups involved in the plots were part of an Islamic terrorist organization wanting independence for Xinjiang, where critics say Beijing has suppressed Muslim minorities. Archived from NEWS+VIEWS page April 22, 2008 ------- MOQTADA AL-SADR THREATENS 'OPEN WAR' IN IRAQ Iraq's most powerful militia leader, Moqtada al-Sadr, has threatened the Baghdad government with ‘open war’ after 20 of his fighters died in clashes with US troops. In a statement read at mosques, Sadr accused Iraq's government of using foreign forces to crush his Mahdi Army movement, the country's biggest popular organisation. ‘I am giving my last warning and my word to the Iraqi government to take the path of peace and stop violence against its own people, otherwise it will be a government of destruction,’ he said. ‘If it does not stop the militias that have infiltrated the government, then we will declare a war until liberation.’ Iraq's security forces scored major victories in Sadr-controlled areas last week. With British artillery and American air support, government forces established a presence in Basra's Hayaniya district on Saturday. In Baghdad's Sadr City, a vast Shia slum named after the militia leader's late father, American forces have started to build a security barrier along al-Quds street, previously a virtual no-go area. This has sparked the fiercest fighting between US troops and Shia militias in months. Archived from NEWS+VIEWS page April 9, 2008 ------- HOME-GROWN TERRORISM RISING IN EU, EUROPOL SAYS The number of arrests connected to terrorism doubled in the European Union in 2007, while the overwhelming majority of attacks carried out in its territory were linked to separatism, the EU's police office, Europol, said in a report released on Monday (7 April). Last year, EU member states reported to Europol a total number of 583 attacks and 1044 arrested suspects - something that amounts to a 24 percent and a 48 percent increase respectively compared to 2006. However, 89 percent of all reported attacks were related to separatist violence in Spain and France. Only four were related to militant Islam. The number of detained Muslim extremists suspected of violence dropped from 257 in 2006 to 201 in 2007, while home-made explosives continue to be their most popular tool. Despite an apparent decrease, several EU states say that the threat of Islamic radicalism ‘has either increased or at least remains high’. According to the director of Europol, Max-Peter Ratzel, the threat is ‘partly’ rooted in Pakistan-based groups linked to Al-Qaida. EU nationals continue to be recruited mainly for activities in Afghanistan and Iraq, although Somalia is also becoming a new destination for jihadists. ‘Al-Qaida is still and will continue to dominate international terrorism for years to come,’ said EU anti-terrorism chief, Gilles de Kerchove, while also referring to cases outside the EU, when EU citizens were killed or kidnapped in Northern Africa. General Hayden, interviewed on NBC's Meet the Press, said al-Qaida has been using the advantage of that safe haven to train operatives who ‘look Western.’ ‘But it's very clear to us that al-Qaida has been able over the past 18 months or so to establish a safe haven along the Afghanistan-Pakistan border area that they have not enjoyed before, that they are bringing operatives into that region for training, operatives that wouldn't attract your attention if they were going through the Customs line at Dulles [International Airport, near Washington] with you when you're coming back from overseas,’ he said. The CIA chief said the situation in the border region has resulted from a 2006 agreement that Pakistani President Pervez Musharraf reached with some tribal lords, that the Pakistani army would leave that region alone. ‘Absolutely disastrous,’ said Hayden. ‘To be fair to President Musharraf, in different times and in different circumstances, all of us would think that what he had decided to do was wise, was patient, was what he needed to do over the long term. The problem was what was happening over the short term. The message was posted on an Islamist website and follows two audio speeches purportedly from Osama Bin Laden. US FLIGHT SECURITY DEMANDS RUFFLE EU FEATHERS The United States is confronting the 27-nation EU bloc with a new set of security requirements, including armed sky marshals on transatlantic flights, as part of its ongoing war on terror. Washington has tabled for signature a ten-page memorandum of understanding, consisting of seven demands aimed at keeping better track of who wants to enter US territory. Diplomats from two different member states have confirmed that a document was distributed to all EU capitals and is being discussed bilaterally. ‘Divide et impera,’ one diplomat called the newly-tabled security measures - Latin for ‘divide and conquer’. In practice, Washington wants in-flight security officers, known as sky marshals, aboard all transatlantic flights by US airlines, as well as a system requiring travelers to obtain electronic authorization to travel before they leave for the US. In addition, the US is asking for a range of additional data, including information on air passengers flying over its territory, on non-travelers allowed beyond departure barriers to help elderly, young or ill passengers to board aircraft, and on lost and stolen passports. They said the terrorists had plans to attack the White House as recently as 2006. ‘Al Qaeda is improving the last key aspect of its ability to attack the U.S. — the identification, training and positioning of operatives for an attack in the homeland,’ said Michael McConnell, director of national intelligence, which oversees all 16 U.S. intelligence agencies. Intelligence officials also said they used a controversial interrogation tactic known as ‘waterboarding,’ which some people regard as torture, only on three senior al Qaeda members early in the war on terror and that it has not been used in five years. The tapes, obtained by FOX News and later released to the media, are training videos showing black-masked Iraqi children between 6 and 14 being taught how to hold AK-47s, stop a car and carry out a kidnapping, break into a house and break into a courtyard and terrorize the individuals living there. Footage aired for reporters showed an apparent training operation in which the boys are seen storming a house and holding guns to the heads of mock residents. Another tape showed a young boy wearing a suicide vest and posing with automatic weapons. They also are shown being taught to use rocket-propelled grenade launchers. ‘These were young boys all masked and hooded, all outfitted with weapons; adults were doing the training,’ said Rear Adm. Addressing a French foreign policy institute ahead of talks with President Nicolas Sarkozy, on day two of a European tour, Musharraf insisted it was impossible for extremists to gain access to Pakistan's nuclear arsenal. The only way for that to happen, he said, would be if Al-Qaeda and the Taliban ‘defeated the Pakistani army entirely’ or if extremist religious groups won next month's election. ‘There is a zero percent chance of either one of them,’ Musharraf said. ‘They (the weapons) cannot fall into any wrong hands.’ Months of turmoil culminating in the assassination last month of opposition leader Benazir Bhutto crystallized fears in the West that Pakistan risks spinning out of control. Israel radio said the weapon could carry an unconventional payload, an apparent reference to a nuclear warhead. Israel says Tehran could have a nuclear bomb by 2010 and has warned an Iranian nuclear weapon would threaten the Jewish state's existence. Mr. Bush told Gulf state leaders during his eight-day tour, which also took in Israel and the West Bank, that Iran was the world's top sponsor of terrorism. The officials accused the Syrians and Iranians of ‘encouraging’ Hamas and other radical Palestinian groups to establish a new organization that would replace the PLO. They also accused the two countries of continuing to provide Hamas and its allies in the Gaza Strip with millions of dollars and weapons. The officials pointed out that in the context of their efforts to overthrow Abbas's regime in the West Bank, Damascus and Teheran have encouraged Hamas and 10 other radical groups to meet in the Syrian capital on January 23 to discuss forming a new PLO and increasing their terror attacks on Israel. ‘Syria and Iran are working toward undermining the PLO and President Abbas,’ a senior Palestinian official in Ramallah told the Post. ‘They want to help Hamas extend its control to the West Bank. They are pouring millions of dollars into Hamas and its friends.’ Another official told the Post that Abbas has appealed to some Arab countries to use their good offices with Syrian President Bashar Assad to ban the conference. The decision to hold the conference was apparently taken in response to US President George W. Bush's visit to the region last week. The conference, according to Hamas and Islamic Jihad leaders, will discuss ways of ‘developing and reactivating’ the PLO. The two Islamist groups have never been part of the PLO, which is dominated by Fatah. Both Hamas and Islamic Jihad have in recent years openly challenged the PLO's claim to be the ‘sole and legitimate’ representative of all Palestinians. Hamas is hoping to name its leader, Khaled Mashaal, as chairman of the new PLO. Hamas and Islamic Jihad have invited several Palestinian groups to attend the conference, including Fatah. However, Fatah officials have turned down the invitation, accusing Damascus and Teheran of using their Palestinian allies to topple Abbas. The two groups have also invited representatives of other groups such as the Popular Resistance Committees, the Popular Front - General Command headed by Ahmed Jibril and Fatah's armed wing, the Aqsa Martyrs Brigades…” ................................... US FEARS EUROPE-BASED TERRORISM One of the biggest threats to US security may now come from within Europe, US Homeland Security head Michael Chertoff has told the BBC. He said militant attacks and plots in Europe over recent years had made the US aware of the ‘real risk that Europe will become a platform for terrorists’. Mr. Chertoff said it was likely security checks on travelers from Europe would be increased. But he said steps would be taken to ensure travel and trade were not hit. In the interview on the BBC's World News America, Mr. Chertoff said he had seen ‘home-grown terrorism begin to rise in Europe’. He cited deadly bomb attacks on Madrid and London, and a terror alert affecting UK-US flights in August 2006, as well as ‘people traveling from South Asia and the Middle East into Europe and carrying out attacks there’. He said it was important to increase security checks on passengers from Europe - most of whom are currently able to enter the United States without being screened first because of a visa waiver program. The airstrike was one of the largest in the war. Officials say the attack destroyed what they describe an insurgent ‘defensive belt’ around Baghdad. The attack in Arab Jabour, just south of Baghdad, is part of a large-scale operation launched this week against al-Qaida in Iraq by U.S. and Iraqi forces. U.S. Army Colonel Terry Ferrell says targeting the insurgent's weapons is key. ‘In the process of these strikes, in the process of these on-going operations, we erode those resources, deny them the ability to go to any location to have that capability or that fighting element and that is where we move forward,’ he said. The U.S. military says there were no civilian casualties in Arab Jabour, and it is not yet known how many insurgents were killed. TERROR PLOT TO BLOW UP EIFFEL TOWER UNCOVERED A plot by Islamic terrorists to blow up the Eiffel Tower has been uncovered. A scrambled short-wave radio conversation exposing the planned attack on the world's most visited monument was picked up by Portuguese air traffic controllers and passed on to French spy chiefs. The 1,060ft high tower has more than six million visitors a year - an average of more than 16,000 a day. A successful strike on the 7,500 ton iron tower, which was looked down on Paris since 1889, would be a French 9/11 and could cost thousands of lives. The threat was uncovered in a ‘vague and muffled’ radio conversation picked up by air traffic controllers in Lisbon on Thursday. It comes after a spate of other threats made in recent days on the websites linked to Osama bin Laden's Al Qaeda terror network, calling for the ‘brothers of Islam to strike Paris’. A police source close to France's DST intelligence agency said last night: ‘It was a muffled conversation in Arabic that was passed on to us as a matter of course, but our analysts clearly identified the threat. ‘The sheer number of visitors going up the tower every day means a bomb blowing up there could cause the most massive loss of life. AL QAIDA TAPE CALLS FOR ATTACKS ON PRESIDENT BUSH A new tape posted on the Internet shows an American member of the al Qaida terrorist network calling for attacks on President Bush when he travels to the Middle East this week. In a 50-minute video posted Sunday by al Qaida's media group, Adam Gadahn criticizes U.S. foreign policy as well as Arab leaders who are hosting Mr. Bush during his trip. The authenticity of the tape has not been confirmed, and there has been no official U.S. government comment. The U.S.-born Gadahn, also calls himself Azzam the American, spoke mostly in English and wore the traditional attire of Gulf region Arabs. Gadahn has appeared in several al Qaida video releases in recent years. A U.S. court charged him with treason in 2006. The FBI has a $1 million cash award for information leading to his capture ............................................. USA PASSENGER JETS GET ANTI-MISSILE DEVICES Tens of thousands of airline passengers will soon be flying on jets outfitted with anti-missile systems as part of a new government test aimed at thwarting terrorists armed with shoulder-fired projectiles. Three American Airlines Boeing 767-200s that fly daily round-trip routes between New York and California will receive the anti-missile laser jammers this spring, according to the Department of Homeland Security, which is spending $29 million on the tests. Jets will fly with the jammer device mounted on the belly of the plane, between the wheels. The device works with sensors, also mounted on the plane, that detect a heat-seeking missile and shoot a laser at it to send the missile veering harmlessly off course. Anti-missile systems have been tested on cargo planes. But ‘this is the first time these systems have been tested on actual passenger airlines in commercial service,’ says Burt Keirstead, director of commercial aircraft protection at BAE Systems, which developed the anti-missile device. ‘It's the ultimate consumer use of the equipment.’ Officials emphasize that no missiles will be test-fired at the planes, which will fly between New York's John F. Kennedy International Airport and the international airports in Los Angeles and San Francisco. The purpose of the tests is to determine how well the laser-jamming technology works on routine flights, how the devices affect fuel consumption and how much maintenance they require, according to Keirstead. The statement was posted on the Internet Saturday. In it, bin Laden urges Iraqis to reject efforts to rebuild a U.S.-backed national unity government. The authenticity of the statement could not be immediately confirmed. In a recording released last month, bin Laden urged European countries to stop helping the U.S. military with the war in Afghanistan. The Arabic television network Al-Jazeera broadcast brief excerpts of what it said was a recording from the fugitive terrorist. On that tape, bin Laden said he is responsible for the September 11, 2001, attacks on the United States, and that the Afghan people had nothing to do with them. Bin Laden also says European nations marched into Afghanistan because they are followers. Senior U.S. officials say it will take several days to sort out who was responsible and that it will be ‘a test of credibility for the Pakistani government.’ U.S. officials monitoring Internet chat rooms known to be used by Islamic militants say several claims of responsibility have been posted, although such postings are notoriously unreliable. In a statement Thursday night, an FBI spokesman said that there are ‘no specific threats’ against the U.S. in web postings reviewed by the bureau…” ....................... AL-QAIDA CLAIMS RESPONSIBILITY FOR BHUTTO ASSASSINATION An Al-Qaida leader based in Afghanistan has claimed responsibility for the assassination of former Pakistan PM Benazir Bhutto, whom he described as ‘the most precious American asset.’ ‘We terminated the most precious American asset which vowed to defeat (the) 'mujahadeen',’ Al-Qaida Commander and spokesman Mustafa Abu Al-Yazid told the Italian news agency Adnkronos International (AKI) in a phone call from an unknown location. Al-Yazid was described by AKI as the ‘main Al-Qaida commander in Afghanistan’. It reported that the decision to kill Bhutto was made by Al-Qaida No. 2, Ayman al-Zawahiri in October. The report said death squads were allegedly constituted for the mission and one cell comprising a ‘Punjabi volunteer’ of the Lashkar-i-Jhangvi killed Bhutto. Bhutto died after being shot by a suicide attacker, who later blew himself up near her armored vehicles just after she had addressed an election rally at Rawalpindi near here. The blast killed nearly 30 people.
