New 5.5 earthquake rocks Japan

A 5.5-MAGNITUDE tremor struck early today off the east coast of Japan, as the nation continued its recovery from the March 11 earthquake and tsunami that killed thousands and sparked a nuclear crisis.

The US Geological Survey (USGS) said the tremor hit at 2:35am local time, 197km east of Hachinohe, a city in Japan's northeastern Tohoku region.

It struck at a depth of 6.3km, the USGS said.

Potential H1N1 "Swine Flu" Vírus Outbreak Concern On US-Mexico Border - At least three people have died while infected with the H1N1 flu virus, also known as Swine Flu in El Paso, USA and Cuidad Juarez, Mexico. An epidemiologist for El Paso Department of Health stressed there is no reason for alarm, while at the same time assuring people that the authorities are taking this investigation seriously. 

Health officials in Cuidad Juarez informed that two of its citizens have died, while others have become infected with flu-like symptoms in what they suspect is H1N1. Chihuahua officials stressed that all of their cases consist of individuals who have been over to the US side of the border, or people who had been in contact with people on the US side of the border. Cuidad Juarez is in the state of Chihuahua. A number of police officers in Cuidad Juarez have come down with flu-like illnesses.

Of the 357 confirmed cases of seasonal flu in El Paso in January this year, three were ill with H1N1, compared to 302 flu cases in February of which 26 had the H1N1 virus. So far in March there have been 126 confirmed cases of flu. There are currently 25 suspected cases of H1N1 infection on the Mexican side of the border. 

Thirteen of them are not confined to a hospital, they are being seen as outpatients. Cases around the country are much less aggressive. The Ciudad Juarez cases may be linked to a high flu rate in Texas, from which Mexicans travel back (and forth) all the time.

Large quake hits Myanmar near northern Thailand

A large 6.8 magnitude earthquake struck Myanmar near the border with northern Thailand, killing one woman, police and witnesses said. Witnesses said the tremors were felt in Bangkok, central Myanmar and as far away as the Vietnam capital of Hanoi where people were evacuated from tall buildings.

New Series of Strong earthquakes hit Japan's northeast

A SERIES of strong earthquakes rattled northeast Japan today, keeping residents on edge more than a week after a devastating tremor and tsunami battered the region.

Two 6.6-magnitude tremors and one 6.4 quake struck within two and a half hours off Japan's tsunami-stricken northeast coast, starting from 6.18pm (AEDT), the US Geological Survey reported.

There were no reports of casualties or damage and no tsunami warnings.

A record 9.0 magnitude which spawned a towering tsunami battered Japan's northeast coast on March 11, leaving more than 21,000 people dead or missing and triggering a crisis at a nuclear power plant in Fukushima.

Around 20 per cent of the world's most powerful earthquakes strike Japan, which sits on the "Ring of Fire" surrounding the Pacific Ocean.

Philippines: Strong Earthquake jolts Metro Manila

A 5.7 magnitude earthquake jolted cities of Metro Manila early evening today though its epicenter was traced at an island off the coast of Occidental Mindoro, the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology said.

In a text message, PHIVOLCS director Renato Solidum said the tremor occurred at 6:37 p.m. with its epicenter traced few kilometers off the coast of Lubang Island.

"Cities of Metro Manila felt the quake at intensity 3," noted Solidum, while citing that the tremor was caused by the movement of the Lubang fault line.

Meanwhile, the United States Geological Survey (USGS) measured the tremor at 5.4 in magnitude. It traced the epicenter of the quake at 57 kilometers west-northwest of Batangas.

An earthquake hit the northern end of Vancouver Island, causing no significant damage.

Sensors from the U.S. Geological Survey picked up a relatively shallow 4.4-magnitude earthquake 100 kilometers south-southwest of Port Hardy, off the Brooks Peninsula.

The quake, which occurred at 9:20 p.m., took place nine kilometers into the earth's crust along the coast where the Juan de Fuca Plate subducts under the North American Plate. It lasted just one-and-a-half seconds but was significant enough to be examined by a seismologist.

Earthquakes of that magnitude are strong enough to be felt and to cause rattling and noticeable shaking of indoor items. There were no immediate reports of damage.

Another Strong quake sways Tokyo buildings

A 6.0 MAGNITUDE earthquake has struck in the Pacific just off Japan's Chiba prefecture with the force strong enough to sway buildings in Tokyo.

RESIDENTS in far north Queensland felt tremors from a small offshore earthquake, centered about 70km southeast of Cairns.

7 tons of ground beef recalled due to E. coli contamination

A Kansas company has recalled more than 14,000 pounds of ground beef due to E. coli contamination, federal authorities have announced.

The recalled meat, sold in large packages and distributed in numerous states, comes from Creekstone Farms Premium Beef of Arkansas City, Kansas.

Some 14,158 pounds of beef, in a handful of varieties, are subject to the recall, the U.S. Department of Agriculture's Food Safety and Inspection Service said in a press release.

A "third-party" inspector -- not Creekstone Farms or the USDA -- determined the presence of E. coli 0157:H7, according to the federal agency.

The USDA classifies the recall as "Class 1," having determined "this is a health hazard situation where there is a reasonable probability that the use of the product will cause serious, adverse

health consequences or death."

Creekstone Farms' recalled products include: 40-pound cases of "beef fine grind 81/19" with 10-pound "chub" sub-packages, 40-pound cases of "beef chuck fine grind 81/19" with 10-pound "chub" sub-packages, 40-pound cases of "beef sirloin fine grind 91/9" with 10-pound "chub" sub-packages, 40-pound cases of "beef fine grind 90/10 natural" with 5-pound "chub" subpackages, and 60-pound cases of "beef fine ground 93/7."

All branded "EST. 27" inside the USDA inspection mark, the recalled products were processed on February 22, then shipped to firms in Arizona, California, Georgia, Indiana, Iowa, Missouri, North Carolina, Ohio, Pennsylvania and Washington for "further processing and/or distribution."

The beef's final destinations remain unclear since they may have been repackaged into smaller packages for sale to individual consumers and sold under different brand names.

Japan Hit By 7.3-Magnitude Earthquake

A tsunami alert was issued after northern Japan was hit with a 7.3 magnitude earthquake. Buildings shook hundreds of miles away in Tokyo, but there were no immediate reports of significant damage or injuries.

The company that makes Skippy peanut butter is recalling two of its spreads that is contaminated with salmonella.

The recall applies only to Skippy products in the United States. It does not affect similar products sold in Canada, said John Coyne, a spokesman for Unilever Canada.

No illnesses have been linked to the U.S. recall of the Skippy reduced-fat creamy and reduced-fat chunky brands.

Unilever United States Inc. did not specify how many jars have been recalled. They are packaged in 16.3-oz (462-g) plastic jars with used-by dates of May 16-21, 2012.

Unilever detected possible salmonella through its own testing. The recalled jars were distributed to retail outlets in Arkansas, Connecticut, Delaware, Illinois, Iowa, Maine, Minnesota, Missouri,

Nebraska, New Hampshire, New Jersey, New York, North Dakota, Pennsylvania, Virginia and Wisconsin, the company said.

Salmonella can cause serious and sometimes fatal infections in those with weakened immune systems.

US geologists are monitoring one of the world's most active volcanoes, located in Hawaii, after a crater collapse sent lava spewing 24 metres into the air.

A fountain of fire was reported at Kilauea, on the Big Island of Hawaii, after the crater collapse about 2pm on Saturday, with eruptions continuing throughout the following day.

The collapse was accompanied by 150 s earthquakes, the United States Geological Survey said.

The Pu'u 'O'o crater floor dropped at least 115m during Saturday's collapse.

Kilauea has been constantly erupting since 1983.

A STRONG, 6.2 magnitude earthquake hit an area of northern Chil, US and Chilean authorities said, sparking fear, but no significant damage or victims.

'Preliminarily, there were no reports of emergency situations from this earthquake,' Chile's national emergency agency said.

The quake was deep, 87 kilometers underground. It struck at 9:32 am (1232 GMT, 8:30 pm Singapore time), centered 93 kilometers east of Tacna, Peru and 1,060 kilometers south-east of Lima.

Magnitude 6.2 Earthquake Hits Northern Chile

A magnitude-6.2 earthquake has shaken a northern region of Chile, but no injuries or major damages have been reported. The U.S. Geological Survey in Colorado says the quake was centered in Putre, about 40 miles from the port of Arica near the border with Peru. The quake happened about 9:30 a.m. local time and had a depth of about 70 miles

Iceland goes into seismic convulsion- 400 earthquakes in 24 hours

Largest earthquake in 35 years hits Arkansas

It was a magnitude 4.7 earthquake that was also felt in Oklahoma, Missouri, Tennessee and Mississippi.

The central Arkansas town of Greenbrier has been plagued for months by hundreds of small earthquakes, and after being woken up by the largest quake to hit the state in 35 years, residents said nthey are unsettled by the increasing severity and lack of warning.

The U.S. Geological Survey recorded the quake centered just northeast of Greenbrier, about 40 miles north of Little Rock. It was the largest of more than 800 quakes to strike the area since September in what is now being called the Guy-Greenbrier earthquake swarm.

ARKANSAS - A 4.7 temblor hit at 11:00 p.m. Sunday night, and the quaking continued through the night with three substantial aftershocks. . The tremor was rooted four miles from the small town of Greenbriar, 40 miles north of Little Rock. Following the initial shaking, an aftershock of magnitude 3.8 struck 18 minutes later.

A 3.6-magnitude quake struck just before 3 a.m., and at 7 a.m. the next morning, they felt a 3.2-magnitude rumbler. Residents in neighboring states of Oklahoma, Missouri, Tennessee and Mississippi reported feeling the earthquake. But even in Greenbriar, the town closest to the quake, police received no reports of injuries or damage.

"We probably wouldn't see structural damage until a 5 or 5.5.. What you're going to see now is pictures sway, things fall off the wall.." It was THE STRONGEST QUAKE SINCE 1969 outside of the New Madrid Fault System. More than 700 quakes, albeit small ones, have occurred in the area over the past 6 months.

Magnitude 5.2 earthquake off Greek island of Crete

Seismologists say a moderately strong earthquake with preliminary magnitude 5.2 has struck off the southern Greek island of Crete. There have been no initial reports of damage or injuries.

The undersea quake occurred at 9:50 a.m. (0750GMT) Monday, some 368 kilometers (230 miles) south southwest of Athens, according to the Athens Geodynamic Institute.

Arkansas Is Shaking: 50+ Earthquakes In Past Week; 700+ In Last Six Months

"Scott Ausbrooks, geohazards supervisor for the Arkansas Geological Survey, said the quakes are part of what is now called the Guy earthquake swarm --- a series of mild earthquakes that have been occurring periodically since 2009.

A similar swarm occurred in the early 1980s when a series of quakes hit Enola, Ark.

"Ausbrooks said geologists are still trying to discover the exact cause of the recent seismic activity but have identified two possibilities.

"It could just be a naturally occurring swarm like the Enola swarm, or it could be related to ongoing natural gas exploration in the area,' he said."

Strong Magnitude-5.7 quake shakes Mexico's Gulf coast

A magnitude-5.7 earthquake shook Mexico's Gulf coast. There were no immediate reports of damage or injuries.

The U.S. Geological Survey said the quake at 7:07 a.m. (8:07 a.m. EST; 1307 GMT) was centered near the town of Acayucan in Veracruz state, about 117 miles (189 kilometers) southeast of the port of Veracruz, and it was felt even in Mexico City, 292 miles (470 kilometers) to the northwest.

It was relatively deep, about 83 miles (133 kilometers) below the surface and was felt across a wide portion of southeastern Mexico.

String of earthquakes shakes Arkansas

A series of small earthquakes has shaken the ground in parts of Arkansas in recent weeks.

Although no injuries or major damage have been reported, the tremors prompted some Americans to sharpen their survival skills in the event of a natural disaster.

A total of 23 earthquakes struck central Arkansas in a 36-hour span last week. The largest of the seismic activity was a 4.3-magnitude quake that occurred at 2:13 a.m. on Feb. 18.

AT least 65 people died in the earthquake that hit New Zealand's second city Christchurch on Tuesday and the death toll may rise, Prime Minister John Key said.

Hundreds of Buildings have been destroyed or heavily damaged, transportation, power and communications are out and at a standstill.

"The death toll I have at the moment is 65, with hundreds injured and that death toll may rise. So it's an absolute tragedy for this city, for New Zealand, for the people that we care so much about," Mr Key told

"It's a terrifying time for the people of Canterbury."

Thousands of people in the Philippines fled their homes as a volcano erupted, sending a spectacular column of ash high into the sky, residents said.

The eruption of Bulusan, a 1,559-metre (5,115-foot) volcano, turned mid-morning into night for about 20 minutes across largely farming areas around its slopes, regional army spokesman Major Harold Cabunoc told

"There was a major ash fall. There was zero visibility," Cabunoc said.

State vulcanologist Ramil Vaquilar told that rumbling sounds accompanied the ash column that rose between two and 2.5 kilometres (1.2-1.6 miles) above the crater.

Magnitude 6.2 earthquake strikes off Russian coast

A MAGNITUDE 6.2 earthquake struck off the far east coast of Russia, the US Geological Survey (USGS) said.

The quake hit offshore at 9:43am local time at a depth of 5.8 miles (9.3km), about 160 miles (257km) west-northwest of Nikolskoye, a small settlement in Komandorskiye Ostrova - a group of remote Bearing Sea islands to the east of the country's Kamchatka Peninsula.

The National Earthquake Center in Golden, Colo., says a preliminary magnitude 5.1 earthquake struck Baja, Mexico, south of San Luis, Arizona.

Seismologist John Bellini said the quake hit 12 miles from Guadalupe Victoria, Mexico. Bellini says they received reports the quake was felt in Southern California and the border region in southwest Arizona including Yuma and San Luis.

An earthquake hit Vancouver Island and Salt Spring Island, almost three weeks after The Great British Columbia Shake Out, aimed to educate the public on what to do during an earthquake. There was some shaking and waking happening on the south coast, as a 2.9 magnitude earthquake rumbled the area for the second time in a week. The earthquake, just high enough on the Richter scale to be felt, happened at 6:47 a.m. with the epicenter 38 kilometers southwest of Richmond. The quake happened 19 kilometers underground, and was felt by residents in Duncan and on Saltspring Island, according to reports.

The port city of Samcheok recorded 100 centimeters (39 inches) of snowfall on February 11 and 12 - THE HEAVIEST SNOWFALL AMOUNT SINCE RECORD KEEPING BEGAN IN 1911.

In the west, Seoul escaped heavy snow, although the Han River FROZE FOR THE FIRST TIME IN YEARS. A 4.3 magnitude earthquake hit Mount St. Helens at 10:35 a.m. today

on the east side of Spirit Lake.

"This one here was a very short one," said Mike Moss, director of Hoffstadt Bluffs Visitor Center in Toutle, located approximately 15 directional miles from the Johnston Ridge Observatory.

Moss said the earthquake lasted maybe two seconds, shaking the building and windows, "and it was gone."

Another strong earthquake has shaken central Chile, part of a wave of aftershocks that have been rocking the same area that suffered so much destruction almost a year ago from a disastrous magnitude-8.8 quake.

Chile's office of emergency services says it has no information about victims or damage from the magnitude-6.6 quake that struck. A magnitude-6.8 quake Friday sent thousands running for higher ground.

A strong 6.1-magnitude earthquake struck under the sea some 55 kilometers (34 miles) from the capital of Tonga, the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) said, but no tsunami warning was issued.

The quake hit northwest of the South Pacific archipelago's capital uku'Alofa at a depth of 81 kilometers (50 miles), some 290 kilometers (180 miles) from its second largest town of Neiafu.

Chile: fifth large earthquake in three days

A MAGNITUDE 5.6 earthquake struck Chile - the third to hit within hours and the fifth tremor in three days. The latest tremor hit 41 kilometers northwest of the central city of Concepcion at a depth of 17.7 kilometers. The quakes earlier in the day measured 6.0 and 5.8. On Friday two quakes - measuring 6.3 and a 6.8 - rattled the region. All the tremors have occurred in the same area heavily damaged by an 8.8 magnitude quake nearly a year ago.

Researchers say Iceland's second-largest volcano seems ready to erupt and might create an ash cloud bigger than one that disrupted European air travel in 2010.

Geologists say an increased swarm of earthquakes around the Bardarbunga volcano tell them there is "no doubt" lava is rising, increasing the risk of an eruption, Britain's Daily Telegraph reported this week. Pall Einarsson, a professor of geophysics at the University of Iceland, says the signs of increased activity provide "good reason to worry." The sustained earthquake tremors in the remote volcano range are the strongest recorded in recent times, he said. "This is the most active area of the country if we look at the whole country together," he said. "There is no doubt that lava there is slowly growing, and the seismicity of the last few days is a sign of it." The last recorded eruption of Bardarbunga was in 1910.

Large 6.7-magnitude Earthquake strikes off Philippines: USGS

A 6.7-magnitude earthquake struck under the Celebes Sea between the Philippines and Indonesia, the US Geological Survey said early. The quake hit late local time, 330 kilometers (205 miles) from the town of General Santos on the Philippine island of Mindanao, and roughly the same distance from Manado on the Indonesian island of Sulawesi. It was 512 kilometers (318 miles) deep, the USGS said. It came two minutes after a 6.5-magnitude quake a few kilometers away and at a similar depth. The US Pacific Tsunami Warning Center, based in Hawaii, did not issue a tsunami warning following the earthquakes.

Strong 5.2 earthquake reported off Oregon coast; felt in Northern California

Earthquake Location A magnitude 5.2 earthquake was reported in the Pacific Ocean off the southern Oregon coast on Tuesday afternoon. The temblor struck at 2:01 p.m. 145 miles west of Coos Bay. According to the U.S. Geological Survey, it was felt in parts of Northern California as well as Oregon. Coos Bay is about 177 miles north of Eureka, which has been the site of several major earthquakes in recent decades. There were no immediate reports of damage or injuries. It's unclear which fault line the quake occurred on.

A magnitude-6.2 earthquake rumbled under the Pacific Ocean south of Papua New Guinea and the Solomon Islands on Tuesday morning, the U.S. Geological Survey reported, but no tsunami alert was issued.

A pair of earthquakes struck about 15 minutes and 35 miles apart in the Los Angeles basin. Automated seismographs operated by the USGS and the Southern California Eathquake Center first were triggered at 12:28, when a magnitude 2.3 quake struck 1 mile east of Lomita, apparently close to the Palos Verdes Fault.

The U.S. Geological Survey says the temblor happened around 8:30 p.m. and was centered about 10 miles east-northeast of Larsen Bay. USGS geophysicist Randy Baldwin, of the National Earthquake Information Center in Golden, Colo., says the earthquake happened in a remote and "very seismically active" area. He says only a handful of people reported feeling it.

Alaska Peninsula shaken by strong 5.9 Earthquak

A MAGNITUDE 5.9 earthquake has shaken several communities on the Alaska Peninsula, but there have been no immediate reports of damage. Krista Galvin, an administrative assistant with the city of Sand Point, said the tremor felt "like it just kept shaking, just longer than usual", maybe lasting as long as a couple of minutes. She hadn't heard of any damage, but said a school on top of a hill also felt an aftershock that wasn't felt in town. Sand Point is about 917km southwest of Anchorage.

China Earthquake forces evacuation of 65,000 people. An earthquake in southwestern China has forced the evacuation of 64,500 people after damaging or destroying hundreds of homes, state media said. The 4.8 magnitude tremor struck the Dehong region of Yunnan province on Tuesday afternoon, bringing down one house and seriously damaging 229. More than 400 homes were slightly damaged, state news agency Xinhua said. There were no immediate reports of any deaths. Nearly 3,000 people died or were reported missing after a strong quake in China's northwest last year, and in 2008 a devastating earthquake in Sichuan province claimed at least 80,000 lives.

Japanese volcano erupts with most violent explosion yet

A REVIVED Japanese volcano has erupted with its biggest explosion yet, sending a huge plume of gas, rocks and ash into the sky and breaking windows 8 kilometers away. Officials widened the danger zone to keep residents away. The eruption early today was the biggest since the Shinmoedake volcano burst to life last week. Wide areas were covered with ash and boulders landed on roads kilometers away. The blast also knocked down trees and broke hundreds of windows in local hotels and offices.

New Zealand: New Swarm of earthquakes hits North Island

Gisborne and Northern Hawke's Bay were rocked by a series of earthquakes on Monday between magnitude 4.2 and 3.3 at a relatively shallow depth, but no damage has been reported. Four earthquakes occurred within the space of about an hour and a half of each other between 12:30 and 2pm and came after a 3.8 earthquake at 6:49am this morning, all at the same location 30km south of Gisborne. The latest earthquake was magnitude 4.1 at 2:00pm, which followed a magnitude 3.3 at 1:01 pm, 4.2 jolt at 12:53pm and 4.2 at 12:39pm, according to GNS Science. All five earthquakes have been relatively shallow at a focal depth of around 25km and have been felt in Gisborne and northern Hawke's Bay. Caroline Holden from GNS science said swarms of earthquakes were quite common, and not necessarily an indication of a bigger shake on the way. "This is just part of a small swarm of earthquakes, and they're quite normal in the region."

34 Earthquakes hit Iranian province in 1 day

Tens of earthquakes, including one with a magnitude of 6.1, have

staggered parts of southeastern Iranian province of Kerman, leaving some homes damaged but there is no report of casualties. According to the University of Tehran's Geophysics Institute, three

quakes jolted the city of Bam and the towns of Fahraj and Roodbar in the south of the Kerman province on Thursday, while 31 more minor or relatively strong earthquakes were recorded in the town of Mohammadabad-Rigan, IRNA reported. The city of Mohammadabad-Rigan located some 100 km (60 miles) southeast of Bam suffered the brunt of tremors with both the strongest at 6.1-magnitude and the smallest-size at 3-magnitude occurring in the villages surrounding the town. The first tremor measuring 5.1 on the Richter scale struck Mohammadabad at 10:32 a.m. local time (0702 GMT), while the last one hit the city at 20:25 p.m. local time (1655 GMT)

The devastating earthquake that struck Chile nearly a year ago pushed half a million people into poverty, raising the percentage of the population living in poverty to 19.4 percent, a government survey released has found. RECORD BREAKING SNOWFALL in much of Alberta, Canada has resulted in people taking some unorthodox methods of clearing snow from roof tops. One video shows a man taking a snow blower to his roof. In some spots the snow was nearly 4 feet deep. So far, one business in Spruce Grove (just west of Edmonton) has had its roof collapse during business hours . Fortunately no one was killed or injured in that incident. The sudden warming trend this week is expected to make matters even worse as the snow pack compresses. The record amount of snow fall this year is largely thought to be an effect of La Niña weather patterns.

Four earthquakes have struck in about two hours time in a remote area of western Nevada USA

The U.S. Geological Survey says a 3.8-magnitude temblor struck around 9:26 a.m. about 14 miles east of the Mineral County city of Hawthorne and 167 miles east of Sacramento, Calif. It was followed three minutes later by a 4.3-magnitude quake about eight miles southeast of Hawthorne. Then a 3.9 quake hit in roughly the same area at 11:21 a.m. A fourth earthquake, this one with a magnitude 3.2, was recorded at 11:27.

STRANGE ANIMAL BEHAVIOR

When hundreds of dead birds were found Monday in Yankton, South Dakota, many residents were puzzled, thinking it was the latest in a string of similar mysterious mass animal deaths around the world. But this is one instance of the many where a clear cause has been identified, as the U.S. government claims responsibility for killing the more than 200 starlings.

It was initially believed that cold weather may have caused the bird deaths, but then Yankton police received a call from the USDA, attesting that they had poisoned the birds at a feedlot 10 miles away. Apparently, some 5,000 of the birds were defecating in the feed meal, posing a threat to the animals and farm workers, when the USDA decided killing them would be the best action to take. A bait laced with the poison DRC-1339 was used, though officials were surprised the birds made it so far before dying. They assure that the poisoned dead birds do not pose a risk to nearby animals or humans.

While the mystery of dead birds falling from the sky in South Dakota was quickly solved, similar mass animal deaths around the world remain enigmatic. 200 dead cows were recently found on a farm in Wisconsin, with a disease or pneumonia suspected as the culprit. Prior to that, mass bird deaths ranging from dozens to thousands were reported in Arkansas, Alabama, Louisiana, Kentucky, California, Italy and Sweden. Mass fish death had been report in Arkansas, Maryland, Chicago, New Zealand and Brazil, and 40,000 crabs washed ashore beaches in England.

Officials don't believe any of the incidents are related, and suspect a wide range of causes to be responsible, from cold weather and fireworks to semi-truck collisions and overeating, though they admit in many instances a clear cause may never be identified. Mass animal deaths are not a rare occurrence.

A report from Hong Kong says that the use of blood plasma donated by recovered H1N1 influenza patients reduced the death rate in severely ill H1N1 patients. The authors recruited 93 critically ill H1N1 patients, of whom 20 agreed to receive the plasma treatment while the rest served as controls. The death rate in those who received the plasma was 20%, versus about 55% in those who didn't receive it. The treatment also reduced the patients' viral load and inflammatory cytokine response.

Plasma from recovered patients has been used to treat a number of infectious diseases, as it contains antibodies that latch onto pathogens, enabling the plasma recipient's immune system to identify and fight them. The use of this approach to treat severe flu cases has been discussed for years but not widely attempted.

The approach has also been used with apparent success in a few H5N1 avian flu patients.

Two US experts on blood transfusion who commented on the Hong Kong report said the idea of using plasma treatment in flu patients is promising, but it faces a number of practical and regulatory barriers, and much more research is needed. "I think it's promising, but it's not ready for prime time. I don't want anyone to think that if they get a bad flu, their doctor is going to get this stuff. The operational and regulatory hurdles are very substantial."

In a flu pandemic, it's far from clear whether blood banks would be able to harvest large amounts of suitable plasma quickly enough to be useful. It takes 4 to 6 weeks after an infection for antibody titers to reach robust levels, which would delay the availability of suitable plasma. Also, blood centers would probably be unable to gather suitable plasma from more than a few hundred donors in a month. If a pandemic unfolded fairly quickly, "by the time we could start collections, much of the mayhem might be over."

Volcano Triggers Yellow Alert in 3 Guatemalan Departments - Three Guatemalan departments are under yellow alert, as a preventive measure in the face of the sustained activity of Fuego Volcano. Sacatepequez, Chimaltenango, and Escuintla are keeping a wary eye on the evolution in the coming days of the colossal volcano. The volcano has recently registered weak and moderate explosions, with thick gray ashes spewing forth from the volcano, some as high as 500 to 800 meters. Such explosions are generating shock waves felt as far as seven kilometers (about 4.3 miles) from the crater, as well as constant moderate avalanches.

California: Swarm of Earthquakes Shake San Francisco Bay Area

The U.S. Geological Survey reported another pair of magnitude 3.0 and larger earthquakes struck near Monterey County, less than a day after a 4.5-magnitude tremor and numerous aftershocks rattled the region. The largest earthquakes this evening - one with a magnitude of 3.7 and the other with a magnitude of 3.9 - shook an area seven miles west of Prunedale at 7:54 p.m. and 8 p.m., respectively. That area of the hills bordering Monterey and San Benito counties has experienced 27 earthquakes following the magnitude 4.5 quake that punctuated the day's seismic activity.

A 5.9 magnitude earthquake has struck off the coast of Chile, but there are no immediate reports of damage or injuries. According to the U.S. Geological Survey, the quake struck about 80 kilometers (50 miles) west of the coast of Talca province and about 350 kilometers (200 miles) southwest of Santiago, Chile's capital, at 3:02 a.m. local time (1:02 a.m. EST, 0502 GMT).

UPDATE: 4.1-Magnitude Earthquake Felt Across Much of San Francisco Bay Area

An earthquake with a preliminary magnitude of 4.1 struck east of San Jose this afternoon and could be felt throughout much of the Bay Area, according to the U.S. Geological Survey. The quake was reported in an area just south of Mt. Hamilton and 13 miles east-southeast of San Jose City Hall, according to the USGS. The tremor had a depth of 4.4 miles, the USGS said. People in the East Bay and San Francisco reported feeling the quake. BART briefly shut down service to check for damage from the temblor, but was back up and running within five or 10 minutes, a dispatcher said.

Earthquake hits northern England near Leeds

A 3.7 magnitude earthquake struck today near Leeds, England, the US Geological Survey reported. It said the quake struck shortly after 9pm local time about 45km north of Sheffield, 55km east-northeast of Manchester and 270km north-northwest of London at a depth of 10km. News reported it was felt by people living in Cumbria, North Yorkshire and West Yorkshire. The tremor was the second to hit England in the space of a few weeks.

Indiana earthquake 'extremely rare and unprecedented'

An earthquake that took place before sunrise Thursday in north central Indiana is being evaluated as rare despite many well-known fault lines in the area. The US Geological Survey reported a 3.8-magnitude earthquake, centered just east of Kokomo, Ind., about 57 miles north of Indianapolis. The earthquake occurred about 3 miles underground and could be felt as far south as Indianapolis, as far east as Dayton, Ohio and as far northwest as Elgin, Ill., about 40 miles outside Chicago. Calling the earthquake “extremely rare and unprecedented,” John Steinmetz, director of the Indiana Geological Survey at Indiana University in Bloomington, said there have not been any earthquakes of similar magnitude in northern Indiana in 175 years. Mr. Steinmetz added that it demonstrates how little is known about the earth’s structure in that region of the country.

Northern Israel rattled strong earthquake

No injuries or damage reported; Beit She'an area felt quake the strongest but actual source has yet to be identified. An earthquake measuring 3.6 on the Richter scale was felt by residents in the Jordan Valley area on Saturday evening. No injuries or damage were reported. In the area reaching from Safed to Beit She'an to Tiberias, police received dozens of phone calls from residents saying they thought an earthquake was happening. Many residents hurried out of their homes looking for a safe place, with some seeking refuge in bomb shelters and stairwells.

Strong 7.0 earthquake hits northern Argentina

A strong earthquake has struck in northern Argentina, but it was not immediately clear if there were any injuries or damage. The U.S. Geological Survey said that the magnitude-7.0 quake

hit at 6:56 a.m. about 150 kilometers (115 miles) northeast of Santiago del Estero at a depth of 563 kilometers (350 miles).

Thousands of pounds of ground beef are being recalled due to E. coli contamination

A California company has recalled 34,373 pounds of organic ground beef over E. coli contamination. First Class Foods Inc. of Hawthorne said recalled packages were produced on December 7 and December 16. They have "EST. 18895" printed on them, federal officials said. Products were shipped to California, New Jersey, North Carolina, New York, Wisconsin and Washington state. 2009: E. coli in beef, cookie dough. A company sampling confirmed a positive result for E. coli. The company and federal officials have not received reports of illnesses associated with these products. E. coli can cause bloody diarrhea, dehydration and in severe cases, kidney failure. Babies, seniors and people with weak immune systems are the most susceptible. Two dead as swine flu cases widen in France

French health watchdogs said on Wednesday the country was officially in the grip of a flu epidemic after 176,000 people had fallen sick, two of whom have died. To be classified as an epidemic, new cases of influenza recorded by doctors have to number more than 174 per 100,000 people per week. This threshold was breached last week, when there were 280 cases per 100,000 people. Three viral strains are to blame, including A(H1N1) 2009, which emerged last year as the novel "swine" flu, according to the epidemiological networks Regional Flu Observation Groups (GROG) and Sentinelles, which is operated by the National Institute of Health and Medical Research (Inserm).

Pastries blamed for 100 staph cases in 2 states - An outbreak of about 100 illness cases in Illinois and Wisconsin has been attributed to pastries from an Illinois bakery that were tainted with Staphylococcus aureus. The outbreak prompted Rolf's Patisserie, a European-style bakery in Lincolnwood, Ill., to recall all desserts made after Nov 1. The illnesses stemmed from four events in November and December, including a company function, a catered party, restaurant dining, and a holiday party.

Three events accounting for 30 cases were in Illinois and one event blamed for 70 cases was in Wisconsin. Rolf's Patisserie is recalling tiramisu, cakes, cobblers, decorated cookies, tarts, pastries, and pies. Because the business sells to retail and wholesale outlets, institutions, and online customers, the products may not carry a company label when they reach consumers. The outbreak also caused the national retail chain Whole Foods Market to recall gingerbread houses from Rolf's Patisserie. The houses were sold in 22 states.

Foods that are made by hand and require no cooking are at highest risk for S aureus contamination, according to the CDC. Examples of foods linked to S aureus cases include sliced meats, puddings, pastries, and sandwiches. Sick people are not contagious, as staphylococcal toxins don't spread from person to person. Although S aureus is not known primarily as a foodborne pathogen, food-related outbreaks are fairly common. 21 outbreaks of illness from foodborne staphylococcal toxins were reported in 2007, with 286 cases. The average annual number of such cases from 2002 through 2006 was 554.

Swine flu in Sri Lanka has killed 22 people and infected more than 300 during the past two months. Since October 25 , 342 cases were reported. "The strain of influenza affects peoples' lungs and triggers off a strain of viral pneumonia. The heavy rains and the cold weather helped spread the virus." The ministry urged people to avoid crowded places and ordered those managing public phone booths to disinfect them at least eight times daily. The World Health Organisation declared the swine flu pandemic over in August, more than a year after the new virus spread across the world, sparking panic and killing thousands before fizzling out.

Salmonella found in U.S., Canada prompts cilantro, parsley recall - The latest recall comes days after dozens of people fell sick after consuming bacteria-tainted alfalfa sprouts in an apparently unrelated situation. Health officials said those first cases became known November 1, with many getting ill after eating alfalfa sprouts in products from Jimmy John's Gourmet Sandwiches outlets. Those vegetables came from Tiny Greens Organic Farm.

The "precautionary, voluntary recall" for cilantro and parsley from J&D Produce, Inc. was announced. No one has reported getting sick from eating the vegetables. In addition to a variety of sprouts, the Urbana, Illinois, produce company distributes arugula, broccoli, fennel, cauliflower, onion, radish and other items. Jimmy John's pulled sprouts from all its Illinois establishments after store locations came up negative for the bacteria.

About 23% of those sickened in that outbreak were hospitalized. The sprouts were distributed in Indiana, Iowa, Missouri and possibly other Midwestern states, with roughly half the illnesses occurring in Illinois.

The separate J&D Produce recall, meanwhile, came after independent tests found salmonella on the company's parsley in Quebec and its cilantro in Detroit, Michigan, both of which came from the same processing line in Texas. The company's products are sold retail as well as to wholesalers, who may then distribute them to restaurants and other establishments. The recall for parsley went out to the Canadian provinces of Quebec and Ontario and the U.S. states of Connecticut, Massachusetts, Michigan, Missouri, New Jersey, New York, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, Texas, Washington and Wisconsin. The recalled cases of cilantro were distributed in Colorado, Illinois, Massachusetts, Michigan, New Jersey, New York, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Texas, Washington and Wisconsin as well as Quebec and Ontario

Salmonella is a bacterial infection that usually lasts four to seven days. About 40,000 cases of salmonellosis are reported each year in the United States. Those who get it typically develop fever, abdominal cramps and diarrhea between 12 and 72 hours after becoming infected. Most people recover on their own, without needing significant treatment. But salmonella in very young and very old people, as well as those with weakened immune systems, can lead to severe illness and even death.

Trio of earthquakes hit off Alaska coast

A minor earthquake struck off the coast of Alaska on Saturday morning, and another pair struck on Saturday afternoon. The U.S. Geological Survey reports that a 5.3 magnitude quake struck about 39 miles southeast of Adak at about 11:45 a.m. That earthquake had a depth of about 36 miles. A second earthquake of 5.2 magnitude earthquake was also recorded farther out - about 50 miles from Adak - at about 12:20 p.m. on Saturday. Later on Saturday, a 3.3 magnitude earthquake was recorded 60 miles south of Atka at about 3:08 p.m.

Swine flu sweeps through the United Kingdom, sparks fear of epidemic - The flu season has kicked off and it is the swine flu strain of the disease that is leading the way as the flu continues to sweep through the UK. The UK is under a great deal of fear heading into the new year as there have been dozens upon dozens of deaths as a result of the flu since the end of October. There have been reported cases all over the UK for the past few months, sparking fear that an epidemic will be looming. The UK is not alone, as all members of the European Union are seeing a steep rise in flu cases. The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) has confirmed that flu activity is on the rise, but in the U.S. the belief is that the risk is still fairly low. That has not stopped the European Center for Disease Prevention and Control to send out a warning for the rest of Europe - It is more important than ever to take precautions and get vaccinated, and to be on notice for symptoms related to the flu.

Northern hemisphere countries are being told by health experts to brace themselves for flu outbreaks. There has been a surge of cases in the UK during December with swine flu appearing to be the dominant of the three strains circulating. But the European Center for Disease Prevention and Control warned much of the rest of Europe was also beginning to see increases too.

Many of those being infected are younger age groups. This is because elderly people have some immunity to swine flu, most probably because of exposure to a similar strain many years ago. In the UK, the number of people who have died with all types of flu this winter hit 27 this week after another 10 deaths. The volume of patients going to their doctor with flu-like illnesses also rose, more than doubling to 87.1 per 100,000 in the past week.

Cases have been highest in children aged between five and 14, followed by children under four and then those aged between 15 and 44. But the UK's Health Protection Agency said a very large outbreak was "not likely". "Recent research conducted by the HPA has suggested that a very substantial wave of activity associated with the pandemic strain is not likely." Health experts said most people with flu would be able to "self-care" by taking plenty of rest, drinking fluids and taking pain relief.

The numbers getting immunized are still too low, doctors have said. The rates being seen elsewhere in Europe are not as high as in the UK, but the European Center for Disease Prevention and Control said there was evidence that the winter flu epidemics were "starting". Russia and the Ukraine are thought to be the worst hit outside the UK.

- A Salmonella Montevideo outbreak caused by contaminated pepper used in salami lasted more than 9 months and involved 272 cases in 44 states. The outbreak lasted from July 2009 until mid April 2010. The outbreak was linked to sausages made by Daniele Inc., a Rhode Island company. The contaminated pepper was applied after the salami had undergone microbe-killing processing. "Companies are not required to treat spices, and manufacturers are not required to use treated spices in their products. However, the Food and Drug Administration is working with spice trade groups and with other agencies to develop recommendations on spice safety standards. Store membership and shopper cards proved useful in tracking down the food source of the outbreak.

UK: Earthquake shakes Cumbria Region of North West Britain alarming residents

An earthquake measuring 3.6 on the Richter scale shook Cumbria tonight, geologists said. The tremor happened just before 11pm, according to the US Geological Survey. Cumbria Fire and Rescue service confirmed the quake. The tremor lasted up to 20 seconds, according to people in the area. Hotelier Alan Robertson, who was in his 30-bed hotel in Eskdale, near Whitehaven, described how the entire building shook. 'I was watching TV and there was this sort of really loud rumble. Then the entire building shook,' he said. 'I ran out of the front door, only to be confronted by my guests running out of their part of the house. We couldn't believe it.'

Double Earthquakes strike off two Indonesian coasts

There were no immediate reports of damage or injury in either, but one sent hundreds of residents fleeing their homes. The US Geological Survey said a 5.8-magnitude quake hit about 140km from Yogyakarta, a city still traumatized by a 2006 temblor that killed 5700. Many residents ran from their homes overnight. Recently, the city has also been showered by ash from the Mount Merapi volcano, which has killed more than 380 people since October. Later, a 5.7-magnitude quake was recorded off Sumatra island, about 300km southeast of Banda Aceh. Indonesia is located on the Pacific Ring of Fire, an arc of volcanoes and fault lines encircling the Pacific Basin

NEW ZEALAND - Huge energy of shake puzzles scientists. Scientists are puzzled why the Canterbury earthquake released MORE THAN 10 TIMES THE ENERGY a quake of its size normally would. The United States Geological Survey has calculated the waves travelling from the focus of the September 4 quake had an energy magnitude of between 7.4 and 7.8. The discovery of hard plastic inside packages prompted a nationwide recall of 72,000 pounds of canned chicken salad, one of several recalls involving poultry and meat products issued through U.S. food safety authorities in recent days. The Suter Company is recalling 8.2-ounce packages of the "Bumble Bee Lunch on the Run Chicken Salad Complete Lunch Kit" and 3.5-ounce packages of "Bumble Bee Chicken Salad with Crackers." The recalled products were put together and shipped out to distributors and stores between August 14 and 28 of this year. The recall was prompted by complaints from people who found pieces of loose plastic inside their Bumble Bee packages. The federal agency noted in its release that it hasn't received any reports of people getting hurt or sick as a result. The recall is a Class II, which means there is a "remote probability of adverse health consequences."

Meanwhile, two unrelated and separate but potentially more dangerous recalls announced late last week were categorized as Class I, equating to a "reasonable probability that the use of the product will cause serious, adverse health consequences or death." Federal food safety authorities said that Diana's Mexican Food Products, of Lawndale, California, is recalling 41,670 pounds of chicken tamales. The tamales contain whey, a known allergen. But the packages don't note the whey on its labels.

One day earlier, Brooklyn-based N.Y. Gourmet Salads recalled various meat and poultry products because, prior to their distribution, they hadn't been inspected by federal health inspectors. While there have been no reports of sicknesses, a public health alert was issued October 30 for a host of Gourmet Salad's products packaged between March 11 and October 29 of this year. The recall list includes 12 items - ranging from Swedish meatballs to stuffed cabbage to grilled chicken - all wrapped in 4.5-, 5- and 6-pound packages.

-Frontier Natural Products Co-op, is recalling two products manufactured with non-organic nutmeg that were sold under the Frontier brand and under the Whole Foods Market brand that contain nutmeg supplied by Mincing Overseas Spice Company. The nutmeg has the potential to be contaminated with Salmonella.

-Whole Foods Market announces that one of its suppliers, Bravo Farms of Traver, California, has issued a voluntary recall due to evidence of Listeria and E. coli contamination at their plant. Bravo's products at Whole Foods Market stores in Arizona, California, Nevada, Oregon, and Washington are part of this recall. Bravo Farms is expanding its recall to include all Bravo Farms cheese. Bravo Farms had previously issued a recall on its Dutch Style Gouda, and now out of concern for any further contamination decided to further expand the recall to include all of their cheeses.

-Artisan Confections Company is voluntarily recalling a limited quantity of its Dagoba Organic Chocolate new moon Rich Dark Chocolate 74% cacao squares because they may contain Salmonella.

-Del Bueno of Grandview, WA is recalling all size packages of Queso Fresco Fresh Cheese, Queso Panela Fresh Cheese, Requeson Mexican Style Ricotta Cheese, and Queso Enchilado Dry Cheese because they have the potential to be contaminated with Listeria monocytogenes.

-McNeil Consumer Healthcare, Division of McNEIL-PPC, Inc., is recalling one product lot of TYLENOL(R) 8 Hour caplets 50 count bottles to the retail level. McNeil is taking this action following a small number of complaints of a musty or moldy odor.

Indonesia closes airports as volcanoes continue to erupt: official

Indonesia closed Malang city's domestic airport Monday as a volcano shot ash into the sky over eastern Java, posing a risk to planes, officials said. The airport, about 25 kilometers (16 miles) west of Mount Bromo, will be closed until December 4, transport ministry spokesman Bambang Ervan said. Bromo, a popular tourist attraction, began rumbling earlier this month and the government has raised the eruption threat warning to the maximum red alert. "The ash contains chemical substances which could cause engine trouble" to passing planes, Ervan said.

Another 6-magnitude earthquake rocks eastern Indonesia

An earthquake with a magnitude of 6 struck off eastern Indonesia, but there was not potential for tsunami and there was no initial report of damage or casualty, the Meteorology and Geophysics Agency said. The quake jolted at 22:53 p.m. Jakarta time (1553 GMT) with the epicenter at 160 km southwest of Saumlaki town of Maluku and with a depth of 30 km under sea bed, an official of the Meteorology and Geophysics Agency said here. The US Geological Survey reported the quake was measured at 5.9 magnitude and located deeper at 13.6 km.

Strong Earthquake Hits Indonesia

A strong earthquake measuring 5.9 on the Richter scale hit Indonesia's Papua at 9.39 am, the

Malaysian Meteorological Department said. It said in a statement that the epicenter of the quake was 1,215km northeast of Ambon, Indonesia and 2,421km southeast of Kunak, Sabah.

Earthquake jolts Pakistan

The northern parts of Pakistan, including the federal capital and Peshawar, were today rocked by an earthquake measuring 5 on the Richter scale, officials said. The quake, which occurred at 5.51 am, was felt in Islamabad, Rawalpindi, Abbottabad, Mansehra, Haripur, Peshawar, Swat and Mardan. It also rocked parts of the country's tribal belt bordering Afghanistan. The trembler had its epicentre 119 km northwest of Peshawar. Earlier, at 1.03 am, areas in Chitral and Swat district were rocked by another quake measuring 4 on the Richter scale. Its epicenter was 74 km northeast of Chitral. A preliminary 5.6-magnitude earthquake struck the Dominican Republic early Saturday, the U.S. Geological Survey said. The quake struck 155 kilometers (95 miles) southeast of the nation's

capital, Santo Domingo, at about 12:35 a.m. Saturday (11:35 p.m. Friday ET). People at resorts in the area described the earthquake as brief, and there were no reports of significant damage.

Arequipa suffered an 8.5 earthquake in 2001, and one of the cathedral's towers collapsed. California: Earthquake shakes Long Beach

A 3.7 magnitude earthquake jolted Long Beach and parts of northern Orange County shortly after 9 a.m. today, but there were no immediate reports of damage, and some people said they weren't even sure what they were feeling.

Double Whammy as Two volcanoes burst into life in Russia

TWO volcanoes have erupted on Russia's far-eastern Kamchatka Peninsula, tossing massive ash clouds kilometres into the air, forcing flights to divert and blanketing one town with thick, heavy ash. The Klyuchevskaya Sopka, Eurasia's highest active volcano, exploded today along with the Shiveluch volcano, 70km to the northeast, the Russian Emergency Situations Ministry's branch in Kamchatka said, adding that flights in the area had to change course. Ash clouds from the remote volcanoes billowed up to 10km and were spreading east across the Pacific Ocean, vulcanologist Sergei Senyukov told Rossiya 24 television. Streams of lava flowed down the slopes of Shiveluch. Strong Earthquake Rattles Oklahoma

One of the biggest earthquakes ever recorded in Oklahoma shook high-rise buildings in Tulsa but did no major damage - even though it was felt in four states. At 9:06 a.m. on Oct. 13, an earthquake located five miles northeast of Noble and eight miles southeast of Norman occurred about eight miles underground. Its center was in Thunderbird State Park. It was felt in Dallas, Wichita, Kan., and Arkansas. No aftershocks were felt on Oct. 13 but officials from the Oklahoma Geologic Society said aftershocks would be be normal and could happened later. This earthquake did not occur on a known fault, but there are more faults in the rocks in the subsurface of Oklahoma than could possibly be counted. The USGS reported a moment magnitude 4.3 and the Oklahoma Geological Survey initially reported a magnitude of 5.1 but that was later downgraded to 4.7.

Earthquake rattles Oklahoma, parts of five states, two injured

One of the strongest earthquakes on record in Oklahoma rattled parts of five states and left two people with minor injuries. The U.S. Geological Survey said the 4.3-magnitude quake struck at 9:06 a.m. about six miles northeast of Norman in Cleveland County, sharply shaking portions of the Oklahoma City metropolitan area. The state has had only three stronger quakes since statehood in 1907. Don Blakeman, a geophysicist with National Earthquake Information Center, said the quake was felt up to 170 miles away, at Bartlesville in northeastern Oklahoma and Wichita in southern Kansas. Reports also came in from Arkansas, Missouri and Texas.

Earthquake shakes Philippine

An earthquake of magnitude 4.2 on the Richter scale hit Tarlac province in Central Luzon, the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs) reported. Phivolcs said the earthquake of tectonic origin had a depth of 23 kilometers and its epicenter was traced at 19 kms. northeast of Tarlac City. It was recorded at Intensity 3 in Quezon City, Manila and Clark Freeport Zone in Pampanga, and Intensity 2 in Makati City.

An earthquake measuring 3.5 on the Richter scale was felt in Serbia, its epicentre being 20 km north from Kumanovo and 18 km west from Lipkovo. A second tremor with the same epicentre was registered later tonight measuring 2.8 on the Richter scale. In Greece a 2.0-magnitude earthquake with epicentre 64 km north east from Patras was registered. Another earthquake was felt in Slovenia, with epicentre 32 km west from Rijeka. Its magnitude was 2.6 on the Richter scale.

Earthquake in California hits northeast San Diego County

A 4.0 magnitude earthquake struck 7 miles northeast of the San Diego County town of Julian on Wednesday, according to the U.S. Geological Survey, but no damage was reported. At the San Diego County sheriff's Ranchita substation near Julian, officials described the 9:58 a.m. earthquake as a rumbling before a sharp jolt. "The building just kind of shook," said Patti Hagerty, an office assistant at the station. "At first there was a rumbling sound and a jolt, but nothing bad." Julian is about 45 miles northeast of San Diego.

Strong earthquake jolts Mindanao, Southern Philippines

A magnitude 5.3 undersea earthquake hit the southern Philippines this afternoon, the United States Geological Survey (USGS) said. No casualties were immediately reported. The quake at a depth of 600.4 kilometers was recorded at 4:26 p. m. with its epicenter at 79 km southwest of Cotabato City in the southern Philippine region of Mindanao, USGS said on its website. The tremor was felt in the cities such as Pagadian, General Santos. Officials were still determining whether there are casualties or damages.

A 6.4 magnitude earthquake has struck the southern Okinawa Islands in Japan and a Tsunami warning has been issued Monday. It happened at 13:28:39 (UTC), 10:28:39 PM local time at epicenter in Ryukyu Islands, Japan. USGS though records showed a 6.3 magnitude earthquake hit 70 miles east of the Ryukyu Islands and about 335 kms southwest of Okinawa. Currently, there are no report of damages nor casualties.

Series of Earthquakes hit eastern California

Several earthquakes, including one measured at magnitude 4.3, hit a remote section of the California- Nevada region Thursday morning. The largest quake occurred at 1:43 a.m. near the Scotty's Castle region of Death Valley National Park in California, about 140 miles northwest of Las Vegas and 190 miles southeast of Carson City, Nev. The quake zone was southeast of Bishop in Inyo County. There were no reports of damage or injuries. The largest quake was followed by several aftershocks, including one measuring 3.8 at 3:17 a.m.

An official from the Volcanology and Geological Disaster Mitigation Agency on Friday said that the alert for 18 volcanoes had been raised from Level 1, or “normal,” to Level 2, or “beware.” Three other volcanoes were on Level 3, or “standby,” just one step below full alert, or Level 4.

Earthquake hits north of Tokyo

A 5.6-magnitude earthquake hit Japan's main island of Honshu about 175 kilometers (110 miles) north of Tokyo Wednesday but there were no immediate reports of injuries. No tsunami warning was issued. The quake hit at a depth of 10 kilometers (six miles) according to the US Geological Survey, causing relatively strong jolts, at 4:59 pm (0759 GMT) in Fukushima prefecture.

Two powerful earthquakes hit waters off eastern Indonesia in rapid succession prompting officials to briefly trigger a tsunami warning.

The U.S. Geological Survey said a 7.2 magnitude quake off Papua province, centered just 7 miles (12 kilometers) beneath the ocean floor, struck less than a minute after a 6.6 temblor in the same location. The town of Tual on nearby Maluku island was shaken, said Fauzi, chief of the Indonesian meteorological and geophysics agency, but there were no immediate reports of injuries or damage. The area closest to the epicenter is remote and sparsely populated.

Flu activity is showing a late-season flourish in some parts of the Southern Hemisphere, such as Chile, where levels in some areas exceed last year's pandemic peak, and in parts of Australia. Flu activity in several of Chile's regions equals or is slightly higher than the country's 2009 winter pandemic wave, with the disease hitting children under age 15 the hardest, followed by those ages 15 to 64. The 2009 H1N1 virus is cocirculating in Chile alongside seasonal flu viruses. However, limited data from neighboring Argentina suggests low levels of flu, mainly influenza B, between June and late August.

Health officials in Australia have reported steady increases in flu activity since late August, though at levels well below the past three influenza season. Activity is widespread in Victoria in South Australia state and West Australia state, where the 2009 H1N1 and influenza B viruses are cocirculating. New Zealand also had a late start to its flu season, but activity, most of it 2009 H1N1 flu, has dipped below seasonal baselines.

India and Thailand continue to report significant flu activity. Though activity in India has been geographically widespread, with 17 states and territories reporting new cases, activity is stable or declining in all but a few states, suggesting that national activity may have peaked. The 2009 H1N1 virus has been India's predominant circulating strain. The country is still reporting many cases and deaths.

Meanwhile, southern China, Hong Kong, and to a lesser extent northern China have reported increased circulation of the seasonal influenza A (H3N1) virus. Officials in Hong Kong have linked increased H3N2 detections with a steady rise in doctor's visits for flu like illness. Thailand is reporting active transmission of mainly the 2009 H1N1 virus, along with some H3N2 and influenza B strains. The rise in flu activity is occurring at a time when increasing flu activity isn't surprising.

An earthquake rumbled across south-central Nebraska, rattling rural residences but causing no significant damage, according to local authorities. The quake was recorded as 3.0 magnitude, according to the United States Geological Survey, and was felt across at least three Nebraska counties - mostly farming communities

A magnitude 3.1 earthquake has sent tremors across much of New Hampshire and parts of Maine, Vermont and Massachusetts. The U.S. Geological Survey says the quake occurred at 11:28 pm, but there were no reports of injuries or damages. The quake, which is considered minor, was centered in Boscawen, N.H., about 10 miles north of Concord. According to the U.S. Geological Survey, residents reported feeling the temblor across the southern half of New Hampshire, as well as southern Maine, northern Massachusetts and southeastern Vermont.

Alaska: Strong Earthquake hits Aleutian Islands of US

An earthquake measuring 5.7 on the Richter scale jolted Aleutian Islands of the US state of Alaska, the US Geological Survey (USGS) said. The tremor occurred about 9:27 a.m. local time (1827 GMT) at a depth of 226 km, with its epicenter some 2,070 km west-southwest of Anchorage,

Xinhua reported citing the USGS. No tsunami warning was issued after the earthquake, whose magnitude was preliminarily measured at 6.2 by the USGS.

Alaska: Earthquake jolts residents awake across central and south-central

The Alaska Earthquake Information Center located a earthquake early Saturday morning at about 4 o'clock. The quake had a preliminary magnitude of 5.4 and was located at a depth of 53 miles. It was centered 40 miles southwest of Cantwell, 42 miles northeast of Talkeetna and 71 miles southwest of Healy. The quake was large enough to jolt people awake across central and southcentral Alaska. It was felt by residents in Anchorage, Eagle River, Palmer, Talkeetna, Healy, Denali Park and Cantwell as well as other locations. No reports of damage have been received.

Earthquake shakes central Oklahoma on Sunday

An earthquake with a preliminary magnitude of 4.0 hit near Luther in central Oklahoma on Sunday evening, the Oklahoma Geological Survey said.

There were no reports of damage nor injuries, officials said.

The quake was located about 4.2 miles southwest of Luther and about 3.6 miles northeast of Jones, in eastern Oklahoma County, at 5:02 p.m.

The quake was felt in Jones, Luther, Oklahoma City, Arcadia, Harrah, Edmond and Choctaw, according to the state geological survey, which is located in Leonard, south of Tulsa.

There were no immediate reports of damage or injuries, but the temblor was felt in Kabul, the capital, where beds shook and chandeliers swung for about 15 seconds. Large 5.9 Earthquake strikes Mexico

A 5.9-magnitude earthquake struck the Islas Marias region of Nayarit, Mexico, according to U.S. Geological Survey. The quake was centered offshore -- 755 kilometers (469 miles) west-northwest of Mexico City and 113 kilometers (70 miles) west-northwest of Puerto Vallarta. It struck at a depth of 36 kilometers (22.4 miles) at 5:32 p.m. (7:32 p.m. ET). The USGS received reports from people who said they felt the shaking from as far away as Mazatlan in Sinaloa, 227 kilometers (141 miles) away.

Strong Earthquake hits California border region

A magnitude 5.0 earthquake struck the California border region, the latest in a string of quakes in the area. The quake hit at 3:52 a.m. about 50 miles south of Mexicali. It's the same area where a massive magnitude 7.2 earthquake struck on Easter Sunday, causing more than $90 million in damage in California and killing two people in Mexico. There were no reports of injuries or damage. Several smaller quakes occurred after the 5.0 temblor. According to the U.S. Geological Survey, the main quake was felt from Yuma, Ariz., to San Diego and into L.A. County.

Bird Flu - Reversing a trend that began in 2007, the number of countries affected by H5N1 avian influenza and the number of reported H5N1 outbreaks in birds have increased this year. Sixteen countries (plus Hong Kong) had H5N1 outbreaks this year through August, compared with about 11 in all of 2009. In the first 6 months of this year, 390 H5N1 outbreaks were reported, versus 297 for all of 2009. However, those numbers do not include Indonesia, which reports the majority of H5N1 poultry outbreaks worldwide, because Indonesia, unlike other countries, counts outbreaks at the village level rather than the household level.

The report says a big increase in reported H5N1 outbreaks in Egypt this year "is most likely the result of improved surveillance through the effectiveness of the CAHO [Community Animal Health Outreach] programme." (Egypt has had 264 poultry outbreaks this year, compared with 71 for the same period last year.) The peak month for outbreaks this year was February, with close to 150, which was well above last year's 1-month peak of about 70 outbreaks, also in February.

H5N1 outbreaks have occurred this year in several countries where the disease was thought to have been eliminated: Cambodia, Israel, Laos, Myanmar, Nepal, and Romania. The only country newly affected by the virus so far this year is Bhutan. As for H5N1 outbreaks in Indonesia, the FAO does not list specific numbers of outbreaks reported, but a chart shows that Indonesia has had the majority of reported outbreaks every month since April 2009. Sixty-three countries and territories have had outbreaks since 2003.

Series of Earthquakes Rattle Western Wyoming

The U.S. Geological Survey says a magnitude-3.6 temblor hit Sunday just before 9 p.m. It was centered 25 miles south of Jackson. Another one was registered just after 2 p.m. 25 miles south-southeast of Jackson, Wyoming and was registered as a magnitude 4.1 earthquake. Emails were received from people in Wyoming who felt the quake. The Lincoln County Sheriff's Department in Afton, Wyoming has said that at least three earthquakes were felt Sunday night in the area but no major damage was reported.

6.3-magnitude Earthquake strikes Fiji Islands

A 6.3 magnitude earthquake struck the Fiji Islands, the U.S. Geological Survey reported. The earthquake struck 100 miles from the city of Labasa on the island of Vanua Levu and roughly 220 miles from the capital of Fiji, Suva, located on the Island of Viti Levu. The Labasa Police station reported a minute of mild shaking with no immediate reports of damage, said Chief Officer Patemosi Wate of the Police Command Center in the Northern Region of the Fiji Islands. No tsunami bulletin was issued by the Pacific Tsunami Warning Center.

Strong 6.2 Earthquake strikes Vanuatu

A strong 6.2-magnitude quake struck near the Pacific island of Vanuatu, US seismologists said. No tsunami alert was issued. The US Geological Survey said the quake struck at 10.37pm (local time)

Swine flu no worse than seasonal flu for most victims, study says - More children and young adults were hospitalized as a result of pandemic H1N1 influenza than is normal for seasonal flu, but that was simply because those groups were disproportionately infected, not because the symptoms were worse. -Pigs found to have human, avian reassortant flu viruses - Chinese scientists documented two distinct groups of "human-like" H3N2 influenza viruses circulating in pigs: wholly human-like H3N2 viruses and double-reassortant viruses containing genes from "contemporary human" H3N2 as well as avian H5 viruses. It is THE FIRST EXAMPLE OF THE COEXISTENCE OF THESE TWO FLU TYPES IN PIGS. The novel H1N1 virus that caused the 2009-10 pandemic contained genes from human, swine, and avian influenza strains.

-Bangladesh is battling a major outbreak of human and cattle anthrax infections, with more than 400 human cases and "scores" of cattle deaths. Officials have described the outbreak as THE BIGGEST IN THE COUNTRY'S HISTORY, though no humans have died. The government has set up checkpoints at cattle markets, put livestock and health officials on "red alert," and sent emergency veterinary teams to the eight affected districts. Meat consumption has dropped sharply as consumers have shunned beef for fear of the disease. -Pertussis diagnosis missed in California infants who died - Eight infants who have died of whooping cough (pertussis) this year were not diagnosed as having the disease despite repeated visits to hospitals and clinics. 3,834 confirmed, probable, and suspected cases of pertussis have been reported in the state this year, seven times as many as at this time last year. The number signals an incidence of 9.8 cases per 100,000 people, THE HIGHEST SINCE 1962.

New Zealand's North Island hit by 5.2 earthquake

A MAGNITUDE-5.2 earthquake has hit New Zealand's North Island, the US Geological Survey says.

The quake struck the east coast of the North Island, near Palmerston North, at 10.48am local time today (8.48am AEST), the USGS reported on its website. New Zealand's GeoNet monitoring system said the quake struck at a depth of 15 kilometers, while the USGS put it at 16.7km. The quake was widely felt in the Hawkes Bay region, GeoNet said on its website. The Pacific Tsunami Warning Center did not issue a tsunami alert, and there were no immediate reports of damage. The quake comes just days after the Canterbury region of New Zealand's South Island was hit by a 7.1-magnitude earthquake

Series of 6 Earthquakes shake parts of Oklahoma

For the second time in less than a week, six small earthquakes have been recorded in a single day in central Oklahoma. The Oklahoma Geological Survey said the six earthquakes ranged from preliminary magnitudes of 1.5 to 3.3. In the same area about 30 miles from Oklahoma City, geologists also recorded six earthquakes that ranged from a preliminary 1.8 magnitude to 3.1. Another quake with a preliminary magnitude of 2.7 was recorded Friday about 10 miles east of the previous temblors. No injuries or damage was reported from any of the earthquakes.

Canada: Earthquake hits Northwest Territories

A 4.5 magnitude earthquake hit the Northwest Territories. The earthquake, which struck just after midnight with a seven kilometer depth, shook the region 585 kilometers north of Yellowknife, the United States Geological Survey (USGS) said on its website. No injuries have been reported.

Massive 7.2 earthquake rocks New Zealand's South Island

A 7.2-magnitude earthquake has struck off New Zealand's South Island, the US Geological Survey has said. The epicenter was 30km (20 miles) north-west of Christchurch, at a depth of 16.1 km (10

miles), it added. Local media reported widespread damage and power cuts. Christchurch is New Zealand's third largest city with a population of about 340,000 people. The local newspaper said it was felt widely across the South Island, including Christchurch and the nearby port city of Timaru, and that there were several aftershocks. Police said damage and power outages had been reported as far afield as Dunedin, 360km (223miles) to the south-west, it added.

Earthquake off Malibu California coast felt by hundreds

Hundreds of people reported feeling a 4.0 earthquake that struck off the coast of Malibu Monday night, according to the U.S. Geological Survey. The USGS's "Did You Feel It?" survey found that the quake was felt along the coast, with high responses in Santa Monica, parts of Los Angeles, Marina del Rey, Playa del Rey and Malibu. It was also strongly felt in the South Bay, notably Hermosa Beach and Redondo Beach, and in the Ventura County cities of Newbury Park and Moorpark. The quake struck at 10:42 p.m. around the Channel Islands and northwest of Malibu. The epicenter was about 50 miles south of Oxnard. No aftershocks were reported, and no damage has been found.

Large Earthquake hits off Mexico

A 6.4-magnitude earthquake hit off the west coast of Mexico striking 283km from the town of Cihuatlan in the state of Jalisco, the US Geological Survey (USGS) said. The quake struck at 9.11pm local time (12.11pm AEST) at a depth of 33km, according to a preliminary estimate released by the USGS. There were no immediate reports of damage, and no tsunami warning was issued.

Mass Evacuation ordered after Colombian volcano erupts

COLOMBIAN officials raised the alert on the Galeras volcano to "red", the highest level, and ordered the evacuation of 8000 people after it began spewing smoke and ash. The small eruption, which was not an explosion, occurred at 4am local time, officials said. Martha Calvache, under director of the state geological service, said the volcano is "emitting ash, and lava has been detected in the crater".

Large Earthquake Rattles Wanganui, New Zealand

An earthquake struck Wanganui measuring 5 on the Richter scale, as reported by New Zealand's TV3 News. A talkback host described the quake on his radio show as the strongest he had ever felt. "That was an absolute beauty. The studio rocked and I mean literally rocked," Mr. Laws said.

Finland suspends H1N1 vaccine over narcolepsy cases - Finland's National Institute for Health and Welfare recommended suspending GlaxoSmithKline's Pandemrix pandemic 2009 H1N1 vaccine as a precaution until a link to narcolepsy cases has been ruled out. "Indications of a time link between vaccinations and narcolepsy cases have been seen, but an actual link has not been established. In light of international information, a connection would even seem unlikely." The vaccine can be given to people traveling to areas experiencing novel H1N1 flu or for other exceptions. There are reports of 15 cases of narcolepsy, six of which "are more clearly associated with the vaccination than are the remainder."

RECALLS & ALERTS:

Walmart announced the recall of 380,000 pounds of deli meat products that may be contaminated with Listeria monocytogenes. The recall involves Marketside Grab and Go sandwiches, but not individual packages of deli meat. No illnesses have been connected to the ham, beef, salami, pepperoni, and bacon products, which were distributed nationwide solely to Walmart outlets. Although a spokesman said most of the meat is likely already consumed, it has been pulled from shelves nonetheless. A Walmart spokesperson could not say how widely the recalled products were distributed.

Hurricane Danielle strengthens in Atlantic

Hurricane Danielle -- the second of the 2010 Atlantic season -- strengthened far out over the ocean early Tuesday with winds reaching sustained speeds of 100 miles (160 kilometers) per hour. The hurricane reached Category 2 status on the Saffir-Simpson 1-to-5 scale, and with additional strengthening forecast

The US food safety agency has predicted more egg recalls as it investigates the source of salmonella-tainted eggs that have sickened as many as 2,000 people. The agency did not yet know how salmonella had entered the egg supply. Since May, the US has seen a fourfold increase in salmonella infections. In the last 10 days roughly 500 million eggs traced to two Iowa companies have been recalled across the country.

"As we move forward with the recall, we may see some additional sub-recalls over the next couple of days, maybe even weeks as we better understand the sort of network of distribution of these eggs that are potentially contaminated. We are in the midst of probably the largest egg recall that has happened in recent history."

Eggs from farms in Iowa were sold under different brand names across the country, making it difficult for regulators to trace tainted eggs through the food distribution network.

On 13 August Iowa-based Wright County Egg recalled 380 million eggs distributed under more than a dozen brand names. And on Friday, a second Iowa egg farm, Hillandale Farms, voluntarily recalled 170 million eggs after they were linked to more than 300 salmonella cases across the country. Americans are urged to avoid eating undercooked eggs.

Strong Earthquake felt in Bulgari

A mild magnitude four earthquake on the Richter scale was felt in the Bulgarian towns of Kroumovgrad and Kurdzhali on the morning of August 23 2010, Bulgarian media reported. The tremor's epicenter was said to be at the border between Greece and Turkey in the Aegean Sea, about 330 km south-east of Sofia. According to the Bulgarian national radio, the earthquake was felt at 7.22am Bulgarian time. For the moment, there are no reports of damage or injuries.

A surge in people presenting with flu-like illness at a New Zealand hospital's emergency department on Aug 16 almost prompted the facility to trigger its crisis plan. Bay of Plenty is on the northern coast of New Zealand's North Island. Crisis measures would have included, for example, discharging patients early and canceling elective surgeries. New Zealand is among the countries currently reporting high levels of pandemic H1N1 activity. Elsewhere in the country, a primary school in Christchurch, the largest city on New Zealand's South Island, closed after one of its students was diagnosed with the H1N1 virus. The school's janitors are disinfecting surfaces at the school, including tables, chairs, and computers.

Finland checks suspected link between narcolepsy and pandemic vaccine - The suspicion of a link arose when a Finnish pediatric neurologist noted a slight increase in narcolepsy (a condition of frequent and uncontrollable desire for sleep) cases this year. A similar pattern has been noted in Sweden. The director of the National Institute for Health and Welfare's vaccine department said that she doubted the existence of a connection but said the question should be examined.

Universal seasonal flu vaccination push (contains the pandemic H1N1 strain) - In February the CDC's Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices recommended seasonal flu immunizations for everyone except babies younger than 6 months old. It said expanding the recommendation addresses two problems: Flu complications can occur even in healthy people, and many adults with conditions such as diabetes and asthma don't consider themselves at increased risk.

In its new informational materials, CVS is promoting the seasonal flu vaccine, which contains the pandemic H1N1 strain, as an "all in one" flu shot. Based on the new recommendation and the results of a customer survey, CVS expects demand for flu shots to be high. More than a third (37%) of those who did not get vaccinated in 2009 responded that they were more likely to be immunized against the flu this season.

Surge in Salmonella Enteritidis prompts egg recall - An outbreak of Salmonella infections has triggered a national recall of 13 shell egg brands and an extensive traceback investigation focused on an Iowa company that reportedly produced the eggs. IWright County Egg in Galt, Iowa, said it is recalling specific Julian dates of shell eggs because they may be contaminated with Salmonella. The eggs were distributed to food wholesalers, distribution centers, and foodservice companies in eight states: California, Illinois, Missouri, Colorado, Nebraska, Minnesota, Wisconsin, and Iowa.

The US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention announced that it, the FDA, and the US Department of Agriculture are investigating a fourfold national increase in the number of Salmonella Enteritidis isolates with the same pulsed-field gel electrophoresis pattern. In June and July about 200 isolates with that PFGE pattern, the most common in the PulseNet database, were submitted, compared with about 50 monthly uploads usually seen over the past 5 years. The CDC said many states have reported increases in the pattern since May. The CDC said its investigators are conducting DNA analysis of the isolates to identify illnesses that may be part of the outbreak.

Epidemiologic investigations in California, Colorado, and Minnesota have revealed several possible case clusters that suggest shell eggs are a likely source of infections. Traceback investigations suggested that shell eggs from the single firm, Wright County Egg in Galt, Iowa, were consumed at many of the restaurants or events linked to the case clusters.

Eggs subject to the recall were distributed nationally and were packaged under 13 different brand names: Lucerne, Albertson, Mountain Dairy, Ralph’s, Boomsma’s, Sunshine, Hillandale, Trafficanda, Farm Fresh, Shoreland, Lund, Dutch Farms, and Kemps. The eggs are packaged in different sized cartons, including 6-egg, dozen, and 18-egg cartons.

Recalled eggs have Julian dates that range from 136 to 225 with the plant numbers 1026, 1413, and 1946. Dates and codes are stamped on the end of an egg carton. The stamp begins with the letter P, followed by a space and then the Julian date.

(The Julian calendar numbers days consecutively throughout the year rather than by month.) Galt is located in north central Iowa. Iowa is the nation's top producer of eggs, averaging about 53,500,000 layers.

7.2 earthquake strikes 215 miles off Guam coast

The Pacific Tsunami Warning Center in Hawaii says there is no widespread tsunami predicted from the shallow quake that occurred. Brandon Aydlett, a forecaster at the National Weather Service's office in Guam, says nothing was felt in the U.S. territory. The temblor occurred at a depth of 12 miles. There were no immediate reports of damage with many people sleeping through the quake.

2 earthquakes rock Philippines

At least two quakes -- one measuring magnitude 4.9 -- rocked Mindanao, but state seismologists said no damage or aftershock was expected. The Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs) said the first quake with magnitude 3.1 was tectonic and was recorded at 5:57 a.m., with the epicenter 64 km northeast of Surigao City. The second quake measured magnitude 4.9 and was recorded at 11:19 a.m., with the epicenter 96 km southwest of Cotabato City.

3 powerful earthquakes, 14 aftershocks rock Mariana Islands

In a 24-hour period, the region of the Mariana Islands, near Guam, experienced three powerful earthquakes ranging from 6.3-magnitude to 6.9-magnitude. The region also has witnessed 14 aftershocks.

FISH DEATHS -

Tens of thousands of dead fish have washed ashore along the Delaware Bay in southern New Jersey. State environmental and wildlife officials say it's not yet clear what killed the fish, which appear to exclusively small menhaden, also known as peanut bunker. The wash-up, discovered yesterday morning, encompassed a large stretch of the shoreline just north of Cape May. The heaviest amounts were in an area of Middle Township known as Pierce's Point. Water samples taken by federal environmental officials found no indication of toxic phytoplankton species, such as red tide. State officials also are analyzing oxygen levels in the water.
