Sunday November 30, 2008...Yea saith the Lord must I shake the whole earth to get your attention, will you listen to me if the mountains rumble and the earth crumbles COLUMBIA - Authorities declared a yellow alert for the Machin volcano located in Colombia's central Tolima department, following an increase in registered seismic activity in the area. Registered 68 tremors over the weekend, one measuring 2.6 on the Richter scale which was felt by locals in the zone. An eruption of the Machin volcano could potentially affect close to a million people in the departments of Tolima, Quindio, Valle del Cauca and Cundinamarca. Machin is one of the Colombia's volcanoes that has the most propensity to affect widespread damage on the Andean nation. The volcano has a great potential to explode, due to its chemical composition, the magnitude of its eruptions and extensive deposits to feed those eruptions. The Machin volcano's geographical location means it has the potential to adversely affect an area important to Colombia's economy. ///////////////////////////

The underwater quakes struck at a depth of between 575 and 605 kilometers, just over 100 kilometers southwest of Cotabato, in Mindanao, said the US Geological Survey. ///////////////////////////// Six earthquakes struck the Moro Gulf of Mindanao island in the southern Philippines, including three of magnitude seven or higher in about one hour, but no damage was reported. The islands are a seismically active zone where the earth's crust is being subducted. The United States Geological Survey has announced that an earthquake struck Alaska's Aleutian Islands The earthquake took place at a depth of 10 km (just over six miles) in the Fox Islands part of the Aleutian chain. HEALTH THREATS Pandemic kills 21 more in India - India reported 332 pandemic flu cases and 21 deaths this past week, up a bit from 330 cases and 17 deaths the week before. The southern states of Kerala and Maharashtra reported the most deaths, 8 and 11, respectively. Only 1 of the 332 patients contracted the disease outside India. Global cases continue at low levels - Global pandemic flu activity remains low, with the most active areas in parts of South Asia, West Africa, and Central America. Flu activity remains low in the temperate Southern Hemisphere during the first half of winter except in South Africa, which has had increased detections of primarily seasonal flu (type B and A/H3N2). Pandemic flu activity in Asia remains low to sporadic, except in parts of India, Malaysia, and Singapore. Experts criticize Egypt's pandemic response - Egyptian health experts are questioning their government's pandemic response. They point to the nation's culling of all swine early on, which affected many people's livelihoods, as well as its cutting class sizes in half and being unable to vaccinate many people. Strong aftershocks follow 6.7 earthquake in the Aleutians A series of strong aftershocks in Alaska's Aleutian Islands region followed a powerful earthquake that shook the remote area, but officials said there were no immediate reports of damage or injury. There also was no threat of a tsunami from any of the quakes. The U.S. Geological Survey said the initial 6.7-magnitude temblor struck at 9:56 p.m. and was centered in the Bering Sea about 155 miles southwest of Dutch Harbor. The quake hit about 21 miles beneath the seabed. ////////////////////////////////// D.C. Tremor Rattles White House A rare earthquake rumbled through Washington D.C., shaking windows in the White House and throughout the city but causing no major damage, according to initial news reports. The first quake occurred at a depth of 57 kilometers (35 miles), USGS said. The epicenter was about 114 kilometers (71 miles) from the city of Kandrian, Papua New Guinea. /////////////////////////////// 6.7 Magnitude Earthquake Strikes Alaskan Islands A powerful earthquake has shaken an Aleutian Island region of Alaska but there is no threat of a tsunami. Five explosions of ash rose 160 feet into the air. Authorities are closely monitoring its activity. They expect the activity to increase and have placed a temporary ban on tourists hiking on the volcano /////////////////////////// TONGA - A huge 10,000 foot volcano on the ocean floor has been erupting for days near Tonga. Out of the water, smoke, steam, and ash have been blasting hundreds of feet into the sky and clouds. At this point currently the eruption isn't posing any threat to anyone living on the islands near by Tonga. No reports of significant fish or animal danger but scientists suspect that there is some small marginal loss of fish in the area. /////////////////////////// NEW ZEALAND - Beneath the waters of Lake Taupo lies one of the world's biggest volcanoes and scientists say an eruption would be one of the most life threatening events New Zealand has ever faced. ///////////////////////////

HEALTH THREATS Northern Hemisphere nations saw substantial H1N1 hospitalizations - Studies on the H1N1 pandemic in the Northern Hemisphere showed considerably high hospitalization, intensive care (ICU), and death rates. Among evaluated cases in 35 studies, researchers found hospitalization rates as high as 93.8%, ICU admission as high as 36.4%, and fatality rates as great as 38.5%. They also found "substantial percentages" of the elderly among the severely ill. ///////////////////////////

HEALTH THREATS Mumbai seeing widespread flu - Pandemic flu in Mumbai, India, this year has reached 150 cases and is no longer localized, prompting officials to alter their strategy. In last year's wave they could identify pockets of flu and focus efforts, but now they say the virus is "in the air," and they'll shift to informing the public on how best to prevent the disease. "We are getting swine flu patients from everywhere in the city. We have to maintain vigilance all over." The city's slums have been hardest hit. Most UK H1N1 fatalities had no underlying illness - UK researchers found that 55% of 631 hospitalized H1N1 patients and 59% of fatal cases were otherwise healthy. Racial minorities and pregnant women were overrepresented. Thirteen percent of patients were admitted to a "high dependency" or intensive care unit, and 5% died. Of 349 patients who had chest x-rays, 29% had evidence of pneumonia, which was associated with a severe outcome. Other risk factors for severity were obesity, certain pulmonary conditions, and raised C-reactive protein levels.

HEALTH THREATS Salsa and guacamole rising sources of illness - The proportion of restaurant-related illness outbreaks linked to salsa or guacamole has more than doubled over the past decade, to about 4%. The two food products contain diced raw items such as hot peppers, tomatoes, and cilantro that have been implicated in past outbreaks. Pathogens included Salmonella, norovirus, Shigella, and others. The illnesses resulted in 145 hospitalizations and 3 deaths. The investigators found that improper storage times or temperatures were reported in 30% of outbreaks involving the two food items, and food workers were cited as the contamination source in 20%. Salsa and guacamole are often made in large batches, and even a small amount of contamination can affect many customers. The researchers suggest that, given the popularity of Mexican cuisine, restaurant workers need training materials on preparation and storage of salsa. People preparing salsa and guacamole at home should also be aware that products containing raw ingredients should be carefully prepared and refrigerated to prevent illness. ///////////////////////

It hit at 20:11 local time (23:11 p.m. EDT). "It was a quake of medium intensity. It caused some consternation among residents, but there are no reports of any damage," Johaziel Jamett, head of the early warning center at Chile's state emergency office Onemi, told Reuters. An official at state copper giant Codelco, the world's top producer of the red metal, said there was no damage to the company's northern installations. //////////////////

NEW YORK - Manhattan Hits 100 Again As RECORD-BREAKING HEATWAVE Continues. Temperatures hit a record high of 100 degrees Wednesday, beating the daily record of 98 set in 1993. Tuesday's high of 103 degrees broke the city's July 6 record set in 1999. It was one of only seven times the temperature in Central Park has reached 103 or above since the National Weather Service began keeping records in 1870. The heat was responsible for at least one death. A 46-year-old Queens woman died of heat-related causes. Her body temperature had reached 108 degrees. PHILADELPHIA - A scorcher of a heat wave - the second in as many weeks - pushed temperatures up into RECORD-BREAKING TRIPLE DIGITS Tuesday and was blamed for a 92-year-old West Philadelphia woman's death. Temperatures peaked at 102 at 3:54 p.m. at Philadelphia International Airport, breaking the record of 98 set in 1999. It also hit 102 in Trenton and Atlantic City. Sporadic winds made it feel alternately like a convection oven or dragon's breath. An excessive heat warning for the region remained in effect until 8 p.m. Wednesday, when the record of 98, set in 1994, was also expected to fall. WASHINGTON, D.C. - Temperatures crept into the triple digits across the Washington region again on Wednesday, the second day of RECORD-BREAKING, or near-record heat. By 3 p.m., Reagan National Airport had recorded 102 degrees -- the same as Tuesday's high temperature. It was the second consecutive day under a Heat Advisory, and the weather was taking a toll. At the Washington Monument, a woman was overcome by the high temperatures. First responders rushed her to the hospital. HEALTH THREATS The 'other' flu strain - The World Health Organization confirmed the recent illness and death of an Indonesian woman from H5N1 avian influenza, pushing the global number of cases to 500. The woman's infection raises Indonesia's number of H5N1 cases to 166 and the number of deaths to 137, for an 83% case-fatality rate. The country has the world's highest number of cases and fatalities. Of the 500 global cases, 296 (59%) have been fatal. Only 12% of UK hotline antiviral users had H1N1 - Almost 90% of the more than 1 million UK citizens who obtained antiviral drugs using Britain's pandemic flu hotline or Web site did not have novel H1N1 flu. Of 16,560 people who used the service and were tested, only 1,932 (12%) had H1N1. The country's Patients Association has raised issues about the system, and the country's independent review of its pandemic response last week called for a complete review of the service. //////////////////////////////

CALIFORNIA - More RECORD-BREAKING COOLNESS - SEVEN RECORDS FOR LOWEST PEAK TEMPERATURE WERE SET OR TIED Monday, from Campo to San Diego to Oceanside. Lindbergh Field only reached 65, breaking the record of 66 set in 1933. Escondido and El Cajon both topped out at 75 - amazingly cool for July 5 for the inland valleys. That broke the record in both cities by one degree. Oceanside Harbor (63) and Vista (70) set records, and Campo (83) and Ramona (78) tied the mark for lowest maximum. San Diego is running six degrees cooler than normal through the first five days of the month, with an average temperature of 63.6. No one expects that to contine all month. If it did, this would be the coolest July in city history. //////////////////////////////// New York City BROKE THE 38.3C (101F) RECORD set on 6 July 1999. The National Weather Service measured 39.5C (103F) in mid-Manhattan on Tuesday. Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, also BROKE ITS PREVIOUS RECORD for the time of year as temperatures rose to 38.9C (102F). U.S.A. - A heat wave hit the northeastern US and will continue through Wednesday. The heat is expected to BREAK RECORDS ALONG THE EAST COAST, and the National Weather Service has warned that the triple-digit temperatures could make the situation very dangerous. An excessive heat advisory has been issued for cities in New York, Pennsylvania, New Jersey, Delaware, and northeastern Maryland, and additional advisories are expected for other cities. Temperatures are expected to exceed 100 degrees and the humidity will be very high, creating a “dangerous situation” in many areas. A heat wave along the east coast in 1980 killed over 1,250 people. ///////////////////////////

Low levels of H1N1 continue in parts of the tropics, particularly in South and Southeast Asia, the Caribbean, and West Africa. Low levels of type B flu persist in parts of Asia, Africa, and Central America. US may destroy 43% of H1N1 vaccine - About 40 million doses of H1N1 vaccine worth $260 million have expired and will be destroyed, and 30 million more will expire later and may also be tossed. This would amount to more than 43% of all US vaccine made. HEALTH THREATS The US Food and Drug Administration has reported some problems at a CSL Biotherapies facility in Australia that makes influenza vaccine for the US market, including a failure to fully investigate particles found in some vaccine vials. The FDA said further that CSL was still using a certain type of rubber stopper on multi-dose vials containing the preservative thimerosal, although the manufacturer had advised that the stoppers may react with thimerosal. Also, the company did not study possible interactions between the vaccine and the stoppers and vials used in 29 lots of Afluria and H1N1 vaccine that were marketed in the United States. The agency also asserted that the company failed to ensure that samples from vaccine lots were tested at least once a year for evidence of deterioration. The company said the concerns raised by the FDA are not related to the higher-than-expected rate of fever and convulsions reported recently in young Australian children who received a seasonal flu vaccine made by CSL. The increased adverse events in vaccinated Australian children were first reported in late April. They prompted the company to stop distributing its pediatric flu vaccine and caused Australian authorities to advise providers to stop immunizing children 5 years old and younger, pending an investigation. So far, investigations by the company and Australian authorities have not yielded an explanation. Calexico moved as much as 2 1/2 feet (80 cm) south and down into the ground due to the magnitude-7.2 earthquake on April 4. The temblor was centered 32 miles (52 km) south-southeast of Calexico and was THE STRONGEST QUAKE TO STRIKE THE REGOIN IN NEARLY 120 YEARS. Two people were killed and hundreds more were injured. It's not the first time a town has moved. HEALTH THREATS Campbell Soup Co. is recalling 15 million pounds of Spaghetti O's with meatballs after a cooker malfunctioned at one of the company's plants in Texas and left the meat undercooked. The company is recalling certain lots of the product manufactured since December 2008 "out of an abundance of caution" because officials don't know exactly when the cooker at the Paris, Texas, plant malfunctioned. Officials believe it happened recently but aren't sure. Kellogg Co. is voluntarily recalling about 28 million boxes of Apple Jacks, Corn Pops, Fruit Loops and Honey Smacks cereals because an unusual smell and flavor from the packages' liners could make people ill, the company said. Consumers reported the cereal smelled or tasted waxy or like metal or soap, some described it as tasting stale. Kellogg is trying to identify the substance on the liners that's causing the problem and is offering consumers refunds in the meantime. The products were distributed throughout the U.S. and began arriving in stores in late March. Only products with the letters "KN" following the use-by date are included in the recall. Rare Earthquake Strikes Montreal A strong earthquake shook Ottawa and Montreal in eastern Canada, forcing office workers out onto downtown streets in the nation's capital. The US Geological Survey reported the temblor of a magnitude of 5.5 hit the Ontario-Quebec border area at 1741 GMT, rattling downtown Ottawa shortly after midday. The USGS said the epicenter was 61 kilometers (38 miles) north of Ottawa. Journalists witnessed walls in downtown office buildings shaking for several seconds. Cracks appeared in the Parliamentary Press Gallery building in Ottawa, and outside some people appeared shaken up, but unhurt. The quake struck at a depth of 58 kilometers (36 miles) at 11:23 am (0223 GMT) off the South Kuril islands, which are controlled by Russia but also claimed by Japan, said the US Geological Survey. Death toll in France flooding grows to 22 as region sees worst storms in 200 years The worst rains in nearly 200 years wreaked havoc on southeastern France in recent days turning deadly. Torrents of flooding water more than 6 feet deep were unleashed accounting for 22 deaths with more missing. France’s Var region has seen its worst rains since 1827. It struck Monday at 9:26 p.m. PDT. The quake was an aftershock of the deadly Easter Sunday magnitude-7.2 quake that shook Baja California and Southern California. More than 40 aftershocks struck near the US-Mexican border in southern San Diego County. The aftershocks - ranging up to 4.5 magnitude - were concentrated in the same general area as the 5.7 quake. ////////////////////////// TAIWAN - A 5.4-magnitude earthquake struck directly below one of the largest cities on the east coast of Taiwan today. The quake hit at 8.31am (10.31am AEST) 32km below the city of Hualien, one of the main cities on the thinly populated east coast which is home to about 110,000 people. There were no immediate reports of casualties. Taiwan is regularly hit by earthquakes as the island lies near the junction of two tectonic plates. In September 1999, a 7.6-magnitude tremor killed around 2400 people in the deadliest natural disaster in the island's recent history. ////////////////////////// In the tropics, a VERY RARE tropical wave for this time of year so far out in the Atlantic is getting its act together right now. It looks like we could have our first tropical depression of the 2010 season, and perhaps our first named storm - Alex in the next 12 to 24 hours. The only other time we've had a storm this early so far out in the ocean was Tropical Storm Ana back in 1979. Climatology tells us that any storm that forms this far out so early in the season shouldn't survive, but the SEA SURFACE TEMPERATURES ARE OFF THE CHARTS right now, and over the next day or so upper level winds will be pretty light, so chances are good we'll see Alex show up, and the Lesser Antilles will need to keep an eye on this for at the very least heavy rain and strong winds by week's end. ////////////////////////// OKLAHOMA, ARKANSAS - Heavy rains have inundated Oklahoma City, stranding motorists on flooded roads and leaving swaths of the city under water. Rescue workers scoured the city by boat to help people left clinging to trees and waiting on roofs. The flooding has caused massive damage but officials had no reports of deaths. In Oklahoma City, officials warned motorists to stay away as roads were transformed into virtual rivers and low-lying areas turned to lakes. Meanwhile, police in the state of Arkansas have found the body of a 20th person killed when heavy rain flooded camping areas early on Friday. Checks are being carried out to determine whether the girl is the last person reported missing since the flash floods, which sent a wall of water crashing through the area in the middle of the night.

Hundreds of people told the USGS that they felt the first two quakes, many of them in San Diego. Strong earthquake hits near India's Nicobar Islands An earthquake of 7.5 magnitude has hit near India's Nicobar Islands, in the Indian Ocean. It is showing increasing signs of seismic activity. Three countries report growing flu activity - Some parts of India and Colombia are reporting increases in pandemic flu activity, along with some deaths, while New Zealand, which is beginning its regular flu season, is reporting a rise in flu-like illnesses, particularly in young children. India's health ministry said nine pandemic H1N1 flu fatalities have been reported so far in June. New Zealand's health ministry said that flu-like illnesses have increased slowly over the past 2 weeks, with general practitioners seeing more illness in young children. recently reported a rise in upper-respiratory infections, but said most of it was from respiratory syncytial virus (RSV). So far South Africa, where World Cup soccer competition begins tomorrow, has reported no increased flu activity, though it has warned travelers to be vaccinated. ICELAND - Icelandic Highland Paradise Covered in Ash - A thick layer of ash covers the highland resort Thórsmörk, which is located near the eruption site in Eyjafjallajökull. Travelers who entered the area last weekend had to sweep the ash off of the tables to eat their packed lunches. It is to be expected that ash will drift from the large area, which is equivalent to four percent of the country’s overall area, in the next two to three years. The Klyuchevskoy, which lies 220 miles north of Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky, is one of the largest active volcanoes in the world. Another volcano in the area, the Bezymyanny, erupted on May 31, sending clouds of ash to the height of 10 kilometers for about 20 minutes. /////////////////////// GUATEMALA - Thousands of tourists are flocking to Guatemala's Pacaya volcano to see the glowing rivers of lava cascading down its slopes, worrying officials who say they're risking their lives two weeks after a deadly eruption. Tungurahua tossed blazing rocks into the sky Thursday night, accompanied by booming explosions that shook the ground. Eruptions this week prompted the evacuation of hundreds of nearby residents. Officials say they've recorded at least 135 explosions, including 15 longer events. European criticism of the World Health Organization's handling of the H1N1 pandemic intensified Friday with the release of two reports that accused the agency of exaggerating the threat posed by the virus and failing to disclose possible possible influence by the pharmaceutical industry on its recommendations for how countries should respond. The reports outlined the drumbeat of criticism that has arisen, primarily in Europe, of how the world's leading health organization responded to the first influenza pandemic in more than four decades. "For WHO, its credibility has been badly damaged." Global H1N1 activity continues decline - The World Health Organization reported "active but declining" pandemic H1N1 transmission in parts of the Caribbean and Southeast Asia, with much of the rest of the world remaining quiet. The WHO also said the Southern Hemisphere is showing no evidence of the onset of the winter flu season but mentioned limited, localized pandemic flu activity in Chile. It also specified low but significant levels of predominantly seasonal H3N2 flu in several countries of East Africa. New Zealand infection rates surprise officials - An estimated 18% of the population of New Zealand were infected by pandemic H1N1 from November 2009 through March 2010, including 1 in 3 children aged 5 to 19 years and 1 in 4 preschoolers. Results of the study showed far higher rates than expected. About 45.2% of infected individuals had no symptoms. Age was found to be the most important risk factor. The current prevalence of H1N1 immunity in the New Zealand population is estimated at 29%.

H1N1 in skunks suggests wildlife transmission - In perhaps the first documented pandemic H1N1 infection in wild animals, researchers from British Columbia confirmed the virus in two skunks found dead at a mink farm. Some minks had respiratory symptoms, but no testing was done. Farm workers did not report flu-like illness but could have had asymptomatic infections. Researchers said skunks could play a role in interspecies transmission and should be included in wildlife flu surveillance. Bumper Kenya maize harvest contaminated by toxins - There is growing alarm among Kenyan farmers about a government announcement that 2.3m bags of maize were unfit for human consumption. Health experts say the maize contained high levels of lethal aflatoxins, which have killed at least one child. The government has pledged to buy and destroy the contaminated maize. The crop was harvested in the drought-and famine-prone Eastern Province and went bad because farmers lacked the appropriate storage facilities. The east of Kenya is regularly hit by drought and food shortages. But heavy rains last year prompted a bumper harvest. Farmers were not expecting so much maize and did not know how to store it properly. Maize can be hit by a toxic fungus if it is not stored properly. There have reportedly been more cases of maize-related food poisoning, and farmers are still not sure what is safe to eat. An FDA official hammered the maker of Tylenol for a pattern of sloppy manufacturing practices that led to a series of recalls in testimony prepared for a House hearing on Thursday. They cited "significant violations" of manufacturing regulations by McNeil Consumer Healthcare. The drugmaker, a division of Johnson & Johnson has recalled products four times in seven months. That included a widespread recall of children's non-prescription drugs on April 30. In January, the FDA had issued a warning letter to McNeil "expressing serious concerns about the company's control over the quality of its drugs and the company's failure to aggressively investigate and correct quality problems." Upper management failed to assure timely investigation and resolution of those issues. "A potential criminal liability" exists as a result of the recalls. The FDA "is also considering additional enforcement actions against the company for its pattern of non-compliance which may include seizure, injunction or criminal penalties." The Food and Drug Administration is investigating reports of at least 775 serious side effects from drugs recalled by McNeil. /////////////////////////////

HAWAII - Kilauea Volcano in Hawaii has marked a milestone after erupting continuously for 10000 days. It's the longest continuous eruption in the world today. INDONESIA - An active volcano has erupted in Indonesia, spewing ash and lava at least 1,500 meters into the sky, damaging crops but not threatening villagers. A 4.1 magnitude earthquake was recorded at 7:39 a.m. The U.S. Geological Survey places the epicenter at about 13 miles south-southwest of Seeley and 17 miles southwest of El Centro. A 4.5-magnitude earthquake in the same general area was felt Tuesday evening, noticeably shaking the ground as far north as Escondido but causing no reported injuries or damage. Q fever bacterium common in US - An environmental study determined that Coxiella burnetii, the causative agent of Q fever, is fairly common in the United States, suggesting that exposure to the bacterium may be more common than what is suggested by the number of reported cases of Q fever. Researchers collected more than 1,600 environmental samples from six states and found C burnetii DNA in 6% to 44% of them. Overall, 24% of the samples tested positive. C burnetii DNA was detected in areas with livestock as well as places with human activity, such as schools, stores, and post offices. The organism is highly infectious, can survive in a variety of conditions, is present in domestic and wild animal populations, and has been weaponized. On May 12 the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention issued a health alert on Q fever for those who have recently traveled to the Netherlands or Iraq. ////////////////////////////

DEMOCRATIC REPUBLIC OF CONGO - A volcanic eruption and subsequent avalanche killed at least a dozen people in the Democratic Republic of Congo on Monday. At least 36 people are also missing. The avalanche followed the collapse of part of the icecap on the Mikeno volcano, on the border between Congo and Rwanda. ICELAND - Starting yesterday, aviation authorities in Ireland and the United Kingdom are allowing airlines to fly through denser concentrations of volcanic ash than previously allowed. They have agreed to create a “time limited zone,” in which airlines could operate in what was previously a no-fly zone, provided they receive approval from aircraft and engine manufacturers and regulatory authorities. Due to their proximity to Iceland and prevailing wind patterns that blow ash from the Eyjafjallajökull volcano toward them, Ireland and the UK have been especially hard hit by air traffic disruptions. Meanwhile, the volcanic eruption that has caused all these travel headaches shows no sign of ending anytime soon. “A powerful explosive eruption is ongoing and the height of the plume suggests that the eruption rate is over 200 tons per second. HAITI - The earth still is trembling in Haiti, four months after the quake that killed a quarter million people. There is "sickening subterranean thunder as aftershocks shift the ground". "It went back and forth, back and forth. I was afraid." More than a million people are living in squalor in makeshift camps, the rainy season upon them.VOLCANOES ICELAND - There were more than 40 small earthquakes at the Eyjafjallajökull volcano on Monday, beginning around 11:00 a.m. Most of them were between one and two on the Richter scale and were estimated to be between 11 and 12 miles below the surface. This could be in part that because the background tremor, the rumbling of the volcano itself, is lower than last week, so smaller earthquakes that might previously not have been detected are being picked up. The series of earthquakes indicates that magma is still flowing in to the volcano from the Earth's mantle. Presently, there are no indications that the eruption is about to end. There was a slight increase in explosive activity Monday, resulting in a briefly higher ash plume. Observations from web cameras showed activity similar to Sunday. The volcano's crater is getting higher, its lava flow is low and not visible to the cameras. U.S. - Tennessee's RECORD FLOODING a sign of things to come. Climate change could make the devastating rain and flooding seen last week in Nashville much more common. "This was such an extreme event. It was just surreal to see. We were driving boats in the tree canopies." Rivers in the middle of Tennessee crested on May 2 and 3, breaking records. Flows on the Harpeth River exceeded 46,000 cubic feet per second (cfs) on May 3 - and that was a day after the stream peaked 4 feet higher. This breaks the previous record of 40,000 cfs, set in 1948. The flows surprised even the experts. They were GREATER THAN ANY EVER SEEN BEFORE, including the floods of 1975, 1927 and any other event SINCE RECORDS STARTED BEING KEPT IN THE 1880s. CANADA - All four members of a Canadian family are feared dead after their farmhouse was swallowed by a massive sinkhole. Police found the family in the basement of their home. Two were confirmed dead after their bodies were removed from the site, while the status of the other two was yet to be confirmed. Incredibly, the family's dog was found alive, although weak, after being dragged into the sinkhole. It is believed the family was in the basement when the earth opened up and swallowed their country home on Monday night local time. Their home is located in St. Jude, Quebec, approximately 100km northeast of Montreal. The crater was 500m by 100m wide and 30m deep. "It's a pretty gigantic crater. It's hard imagining something like this. It's pretty impressive." Neighbors said the area's soil was unstable and a similar landslide wiped out a small bridge a few years ago. The two adults were in their 40s, one daughter was in fourth grade and the other was a high school student. Three cars in front of the house were also swept away, as well as a nearby road. Five other houses in the area were evacuated. ///////////////////////////// NEVADA - Geologists in Nevada are trying to better understand an earthquake fault west of Pahrump that has the potential to send a jolt to the Las Vegas Valley. Crews in January began digging three 10-foot-deep trenches along the Stateline fault as part of a research project. Although geologists have known about the fault for decades, scientists may have underestimated its ability to produce a large earthquake. The fault could produce a magnitude 7 temblor. Tornadoes kill 5 in Oklahoma Tornadoes struck Oklahoma, heavily damaging homes and killing at least five people, officials said. Two people were killed in Oklahoma County and three were killed in Tecumseh County, Oklahoma Department of Emergency Management spokesman Jerry Lojka said. Tulsa radio station reported a twister struck a truck stop in Midwest City, resulting in the death of at least one person. With severe thunderstorms producing several twisters, there were reports of damage near Oklahoma City, Medford, Ponca City and Yukon, the radio station said. //////////////////////////

Coastal residents fled from their homes and headed inland fearing a destructive tsunami, but officials said there were no reports of damage or casualties from the latest quake to strike Indonesia. //////////////////////// ICELAND - The Eyjafjallajökull volcano is starting to bulge out, or experience "significant changes in horizontal movement," according to volcanologists at the Icelandic Meteorological Office . Global positioning satellite stations placed around the volcano have been moving outwards over the last 48 hours [as of Friday.] It's not clear how big the bulge is as well as what it might mean for future eruptions. Another, higher-level ash cloud is still hanging over the Atlantic, delaying flights between Europe and the US as jets divert around it. Activity remains sporadic in other Southern Hemisphere regions. Seasonal type B flu was detected sporadically across Asia, Africa, Europe, and the Americas. US flu activity remains low - Influenza activity across the United States continues to decline, with the proportion of deaths attributed to pneumonia and influenza below the epidemic threshold. The proportion of outpatient visits for flu-like illness was 0.7%, below the national baseline of 2.3%. Of the eight influenza A viruses subtyped, all were novel H1N1. One pediatric H1N1 death was reported. Four states had local flu activity, and 30 states or territories reported sporadic activity. Australian state running low on seasonal vaccine - Supplies of seasonal influenza vaccine, which contains the pandemic strain, are running low in Australia's second most populous state, Victoria. The earthquake's depth is estimated at 1.1 miles below the earth's surface. A second earthquake, with a magnitude of 4.7, originated in the same general area, just south of the border, at 11:46 a.m. ////////////////////////// Magnitude 7.4 earthquake rattles western Indonesia An earthquake with a preliminary magnitude of 7.4 rattled Indonesia's North Sumatra province Sunday, prompting a brief local tsunami watch, knocking out power and damaging some homes, officials said. Some 10,000 homes have been destroyed. The worst hit is the city of Chongqing and the Hunan province. The elements affected over 2.5 million people. Pandemic may force UK primary-care cuts - The cost borne by primary care practices in England to combat pandemic H1N1 flu may lead to cuts in services. A survey of 107 primary care practices found that each practice paid an average of $512,000 (US) to fight novel H1N1. This may lead one in six of the practices to cut other services, and some have already made cuts. A British Medical Association official said the government should foot the pandemic bill rather than individual practices. New Zealand sees increase in flu-like illness - As New Zealand heads into its traditional flu season, surveillance data from physicians' offices and the national Healthline hotline show a continued increase in those reporting influenza-like illness. Though numbers are still below baseline, they are higher than at this time last year. The increase could signal higher pandemic flu activity. Children who had pandemic flu were more likely to have sore throat, lower respiratory symptoms, and gastrointestinal problems, including nausea and loss of appetite. Inspectors found thick dust and grime covering certain equipment, a hole in the ceiling and duct tape-covered pipes at the Fort Washington, Pennsylvania, facility that made 40 products recalled last Friday. Inspectors also found raw ingredients contaminated by an unspecified bacteria, a lack of quality control procedures and poor handling of complaints. The findings were a further blow to J&J's reputation, as the FDA urged parents to choose private label alternatives for the over-the-counter medications and said it was weighing possible further regulatory action. USA TENNESSEE, MISSISSIPPI, KENTUCKY - At least 27 people were killed in three southern states over the weekend. Seventeen people were killed in Tennessee, most of them drowning in flash floods, while the others died in Mississippi and Kentucky. Parts of Nashville, Tennessee, have been evacuated after a levee protecting the southern city sprang a leak. Nashville landmarks like the Country Music Hall of Fame and the symphony center are surrounded by water. In Nashville, more than 13in (33cm) of rain fell over two days, almost doubling the previous rainfall record. Hickman county, to the east of Nashville, requested large quantities of water after their waste water and water treatment plants broke down. "This situation is going to require a very large recovery process. The safety of some of our infrastructure is questionable." In Mississippi, where tornados killed 10 people nine days ago, driving rains and more tornados tore through farming regions damaging homes and destroying crops. "The month of May started off with numerous storms which caused major damage and took the lives of six people." Reports of damage continue to roll in. The Red Cross and Salvation Army evacuated dozens of people from their homes to area shelters. In Tennessee, two days of driving rain have caused widespread flooding, forcing scores to evacuate homes and businesses. At least two more people were listed as missing. There is growing evidence that flu vaccines don't protect elderly people from flu-related death, but flu experts do not entirely agree about how much this should be publicized. The director of the University of Minnesota Center for Infectious Disease Research and Policy (Osterholm) said that it's time to be more open about the vaccine's lack of effectiveness in older people. Flu vaccines don't work as well in older people as in younger because the aging immune system responds less vigorously. The vaccine may offer some protection in healthy older people, but evidence suggests it does not protect the frail elderly. The immunization director for the Minnesota Department of Health said she welcomes the findings but worries that if they are publicized, people will think there is no reason to get a flu vaccination. Osterholm said he initially was reluctant to accept the evidence that flu vaccines don't save elderly people's lives but now finds it incontrovertible. He added that new vaccines that work better in the elderly are needed. The advice follows concerns the vaccine is adversely affecting children's health. "We suggest doctors and health professionals vaccinating children don't use the seasonal flu vaccine for the moment, until we can get the Therapeutic Goods Administration to investigate this in more detail." He said the concerns stemmed from a significant rise in the number of children developing a fever after receiving the vaccine. In light of the seasonal flu shot suspension, he suggested children get vaccinated against swine flu instead, because that could be a health risk this winter too. Alabama reporting 1 H1N1 death per week - One fourth of Alabama's 52 pandemic flu deaths have occurred this year, and over the past several weeks the death toll has risen. After recording five H1N1 deaths in January and February, the state has already seen eight in March and April. "It looked like it [death rate] had peaked and was reaching the lower end of the bell curve. Then it increased." A potentially deadly strain of fungus is spreading among animals and people in the northwestern United States and the Canadian province of British Columbia. The airborne fungus, called Cryptococcus gattii, usually only infects transplant and AIDS patients and people with otherwise compromised immune systems, but the new strain is genetically different. "This novel fungus is worrisome because it appears to be a threat to otherwise healthy people. The findings presented here document that the outbreak of C. gattii in Western North America is continuing to expand throughout this temperate region. Our findings suggest further expansion into neighboring regions is likely to occur and aim to increase disease awareness in the region." The new strain appears to be UNUSUALLY deadly, with a mortality rate of about 25 percent among the 21 U.S. cases analyzed. "From 1999 through 2003, the cases were largely restricted to Vancouver Island. Between 2003 and 2006, the outbreak expanded into neighboring mainland British Columbia and then into Washington and Oregon from 2005 to 2009. Based on this historical trajectory of expansion, the outbreak may continue to expand into the neighboring region of Northern California, and possibly further." The spore-forming fungus can cause symptoms in people and animals two weeks or more after exposure. They include a cough that lasts for weeks, sharp chest pain, shortness of breath, headache, fever, nighttime sweats and weight loss. It has also turned up in cats, dogs, an alpaca and a sheep. Five countries still infected with bird flu identified Fears of 2006's bird flu epidemic have been raised again as five countries have been identified as potentially still being infected with the disease, which poses a global threat to human and animal health. Sixty-three countries successfully eradicated bird flu, but the disease has recently been found in Egypt, Indonesia, Bangladesh, Vietnam and China, according to Juan Lubroth, the UN Food and Agriculture Organizations' chief veterinary officer. Large earthquakes — above 4 on the Richter Scale — are occurring in Utah at about a normal rate, but geologists say it seems much higher. Thursday evening’s quake on the Utah/Wyoming border is number 27 so far this year in Utah. That one near Randolph was one of the strongest in the state in 75 years, according to seismic station reports, the U.S. Geological Survey and professional quake watchers. Between April of last year and now, there were 80 large earthquakes, according to the USGS, which is quick to point out quakes are just part of the natural give and take in the supporting land mass miles below Utah’s surface. ///////////////////////////////////// CALIFORNIA - The number of earthquakes greater than magnitude 4.0 in Southern California and Baja California has increased significantly in 2010. No hospitalizations or deaths were reported, and the ACHA saw no evidence of sustained transmission. Vaccine uptake held at 8%, where it has been for several weeks. USDA program to find harmful residues in meat is failing - The US Department of Agriculture's program to monitor the meat supply for traces of veterinary drugs, pesticides, and heavy metals is failing. "Together, FSIS, FDA, and EPA have not established thresholds for many dangerous substances (eg, copper or dioxin), which has resulted in meat with these substances being distributed in commerce. 'Growing concern' over marketing tainted beef Beef containing harmful pesticides, veterinary antibiotics and heavy metals is being sold to the public because federal agencies have failed to set limits for the contaminants or adequately test for them, a federal audit finds. A program set up to test beef for chemical residues "is not accomplishing its mission of monitoring the food supply for … dangerous substances, which has resulted in meat with these substances being distributed in commerce," says the audit by the U.S. Department of Agriculture's Office of Inspector General. The earthquake was recorded at 1:48 a.m. local time Saturday. The USGS National Earthquake Information Center in Golden, Colo., says it was most strongly felt in the Valdez area. The quake was centered about 100 miles east-northeast of Anchorage and 25 miles south of Nelchina. The 2:12 a.m. quake was centered 16 miles west southwest of Calexico. People told the USGS that they felt the quake in most San Diego County zip codes, as well as several cities in Orange County. The U.S. Geological Survey said the 7.1-magnitude quake struck at Sunday evening. Its epicenter was about 130 miles southeast of the capital, Honiara, in the Pacific Ocean. Subsequent testing of the GlaxoSmithKline vaccine detected the potency issue, which has also been found in some US vaccine lots. Health officials assured the public that vaccines already administered provide sufficient protection. CDC sees little change in low H1N1 levels - The incidence of H1N1 flu has sunk to low levels in most of the United States. The three southeastern states about which the CDC raised the alarm a week ago - Alabama, Georgia, and South Carolina - continue to report regional flu activity. However, visits to doctors, lab-confirmed hospitalizations, and the proportion of deaths attributed to pneumonia and influenza all declined.

Earthquake rocks south central Alaska A magnitude 4.6 earthquake has rattled south central Alaska, shaking buildings in Anchorage. The Alaska Earthquake Information Center says it received no reports of the quake causing damage. The temblor was recorded at 8:19 a.m. Wednesday. It was centered 35 miles northeast of Anchorage and 20 miles northwest of Palmer. The earthquake information center says the quake was 19 miles deep. People vaccinated against seasonal flu appeared to have been at increased risk of the H1N1 pandemic flu that killed thousands worldwide in 2009. But the link between seasonal flu vaccinations and subsequent pandemic flu illness is tenuous. One study "confirmed that the seasonal vaccine provided protection against seasonal influenza, but found it to be associated with an increased risk of approximately 68 per cent for H1N1 disease." A further three studies also found an "increased likelihood of H1N1 illness in people who had received the seasonal vaccine compared to those who had not." The researchers said these do not reveal a "true cause-and-effect relationship" between seasonal flu vaccination and subsequent H1N1 illness. The observed association may also be "due to differences in some unidentified factor(s) among the groups being studied." Six other studies produced "highly conflicting results." Thus, it would be "premature to conclude" that seasonal flu vaccinations increased the risk of pandemic illness in 2009. The researchers also noted that the World Health Organisation has recommended that H1N1 be included in subsequent seasonal vaccine formulations. This would provide protection against H1N1 and "thereby obviate any risk that might have been due to the seasonal vaccine in 2009, which did not include H1N1." No H1N1 immunity in older Singaporeans - Researchers in Singapore performed serologic tests on 50 healthy volunteers, most of whom were born before 1958 and therefore potentially carrying H1N1 antibodies. However, none of the recruits, whose median age was 60, had immunity to pandemic H1N1 flu, which differs from findings in western populations. The authors say the results may reflect demographic differences, a very low seasonal-flu-vaccine rate in Singapore, or less exposure of Southeast Asians to swine-origin viruses from the West.

Redoubt volcano begins rumbling again A swarm of small earthquakes began at Mount Redoubt in what scientists said was a warning that the volcano could be waking from its slumber. "It is reminding us that it is an active volcano," said Rick Wessels, a geophysicist with the U.S. Geological Survey in Anchorage. Major 7.2 Earthquake Rocks San Diego, Causes Damage & Injury on Both Sides of the Border SAN DIEGO - A major 7.2 earthquake centered near Mexicali rocked all of Southern California Sunday afternoon, setting high rise buildings rocking back and forth from San Diego to Los Angeles and causing death, injury and destruction in Mexico. The epicenter was 19 miles southeast of Mexicali, at an area that has been experiencing a swarm of magnitude 3.0 quakes all week. Dozens of smaller earthquakes have been recorded in the region since the initial quake; the strongest was a 5.4 at 4:25 p.m. No tsunami warnings, watches or advisories were issued as a result of the earthquake more than 100 miles inland. Hundreds of people on Tijuana's crowded beach feared a possible tsunami and fled when they felt the ground shake, said Capt. Juan Manuel Hernandez, the city fire department's chief of aquatic rescue. MEXICO - A 7.2 magnitude earthquake centered in Baja California, Mexico was felt all over Southern California, rocking high rise buildings from San Diego to Los Angeles, but there were no immediate reports of major damage. One man died when his home collapsed on him in Baja. The man's home was very close to the quake's epicenter, just outside Mexical. There are reports of people trapped in more home collapses in Mexicali and rescue teams from nearby Tijuana are rushing over to the city to aid. The preliminary magnitude 6.9 quake struck about 6 miles below the earth's surface at 3:40 p.m. PT, about 110 miles east-southeast of Tijuana. After examining data, seismologists upgraded the size of Sunday's 25-second quake from a magnitude 6.9 to 7.2. "This is the largest earthquake since the [7.3 magnitude] Landers earthquake of 1992. A 7.2 is going to happen over a pretty long fault, probably close to 50 miles long." Seismologists are working to determine which of a series of faults the quake occurred on. The temblor's force caused high-rise buildings in San Diego to sway back and forth around 30 seconds before rocking high-rise buildings in downtown Los Angeles. Over 20 million people felt shaking related to the earthquake. Strong shaking was reportedly felt as far away as Las Vegas, Nevada and Yuma, Arizona. A serious of powerful aftershocks, including a 5.1 magnitude jolt, were felt in the hour after the initial magnitude 7.2 quake struck in Baja California, Mexico. Magnitude 4.5 and magnitude 4.3 aftershocks came before and after. It is "reasonably likely" that the area could see a "triggered earthquake" around magnitude 6.0 in the next few days following the quake. There are growing reports of damages emerging from Mexicali and Calexico, including structural damage, broken windows, leaking gas lines, loss of water services, and loss of electricity in portions of Northern Mexico. There are reports of substantial damage in the older section of Calexico. The LAFD reports several instances of people being trapped in elevators, including one report of a woman trapped on the 34th floor of a building in Century City. No injuries or damage was reported from the Tuesday afternoon quake felt primarily in the Bucksport area. The U.S. Geological Survey says the quake was reported at 4:42 p.m. Eastern time and was centered seven miles east-northeast of Bucksport. Emergency department workers have had the highest H1N1 infection rate among hospital staff, according to a new study - followed by those in pediatrics, ambulatory care, and anesthesiology. Data from five hospitals showed 123 confirmed cases, with an infection rate of 29% in adult emergency departments. Almost 62% of healthcare workers received the seasonal flu vaccine but just 37% received the pandemic vaccine. Healthcare workers were more likely to believe that the seasonal flu vaccine was safe when compared to the pandemic vaccine. More workers believed the seasonal flu vaccine was more worth the time and expense than the pandemic vaccine counterpart. Though healthcare workers were the top priority group to receive the first doses in early October, most of those doses were the inhaled version, which was contra-indicated for some people with underlying conditions and those aged 50 and over, both of whom make up a sizable segment of the healthcare workforce. //////////////////////////////////////////

South Africa faces wide outbreak of Rift Valley fever - An outbreak of Rift Valley fever that began in South Africa in February has expanded to five of the country's nine provinces, with 63 human cases and 2 deaths in three provinces. Rift Valley fever is transmitted among animals by mosquitoes. Most human cases are mild, with severe disease occurring in about 1% of cases. In severe cases, the virus can cause meningoencephalitis, retinal disease, or bleeding, and there is no specific treatment. Disease experts are concerned about the possibility of an introduction of the virus into the United States. South Africa has had sporadic cases of Rift Valley fever in recent years. The last major outbreak was in 1974-76, when an estimated 10,000 to 20,000 human cases occurred. South Africa is particularly alert to disease outbreaks at the moment, because the country will host the 2010 FIFA World Cup soccer tournament from June 11 to July 11 in venues around the country.

New York and the Northeast are forecast to get 5.5 inches (13.9 centimeters) of rainfall from the storm that started late Sunday, pushing swollen rivers from New Jersey to Massachusetts back into flood stage. Manhattan’s Central Park received 10.54 inches of rain in March 1983, the current record. The overnight rainfall pushed this month’s unofficial total to about 7.7 inches. “They are going to get soaked, it will be 2 to 4 inches easy across the Northeast. I am concerned about widespread flooding from New Jersey up into eastern Massachusetts, and that includes New York City.” An unbroken string of flood watches and warnings stretches from Maine to Virginia. Georgia's rise in serious H1N1 cases worries CDC - Public health officials are so concerned by an uptick of serious cases of H1N1 flu in the southeastern United States that they called a short-notice press briefing yesterday to urge Americans to be vaccinated against the pandemic strain. They said they are particularly concerned about the "worrisome trend" in Georgia, where "more than 40" people were hospitalized in the past week for lab-confirmed flu. Since mid-February, Georgia has had more flu-related hospitalizations than any other state, as well as more than Georgia has seen since its flu peak in October. Last week, the CDC said that Georgia, Alabama, and South Carolina were experiencing regional activity, the second-highest level of flu activity. The new cases are occurring in adults with chronic medical conditions, a group that health officials have consistently urged to take the H1N1 shot. The new victims were not vaccinated - Georgia had one of the lowest rates of flu-vaccine acceptance last fall. The CDC is sufficiently concerned about the Georgia cases that it has loaned a team of its disease detectives to the state. "Seeing an increase in cases again in Georgia is UNUSUAL. Does that mean we're going to see that in other states? I really don't know." Asked whether the Georgia cases might be the first blip in a feared third wave of flu: "I can't say whether we'll have another wave of infection, but I'm worried about a different possibility. I'm worried that additional cases will be happening day in and day out in people who thought there was no risk anymore." Since the beginning of the pandemic almost a year ago, 265,000 Americans have been hospitalized for H1N1 infections and 12,000 have died, according to CDC estimates. "Ninety percent of those people, about 11,000, are people under 65," in contrast to a normal season in which most victims are elderly. China drought threatens key Tamiflu ingredient - A severe drought in four of China's southwestern provinces is threatening production of star anise, a major source of shikimic acid, a key ingredient of oseltamivir (Tamiflu). A forestry expert said Roche, the maker of Tamiflu, gets two thirds of its star anise from China. A Roche official said it's not clear if the drought will affect Tamiflu production and that the company could substitute another ingredient for star anise.

An earthquake with a magnitude of 2.9 struck 9 miles northwest of the Pinnacles at 6:06 p.m. Saturday, according to the U.S. Geological Survey in Menlo Park. The quake occurred a fifth of a mile below the Earth's surface. An quake with a magnitude of 1.7, centered two miles north of Diablo in Contra Costa County and about 6 miles underground, occurred at 10:45 p.m. Saturday. A 2.0 tremor hit 6 miles north of Milpitas about 4 miles under the surface at 8:45 a.m. today. USA OKLAHOMA - The U.S. Geological Survey recorded three earthquakes in central Oklahoma in a span of less than seven hours. A 3.7 magnitude quake was recorded near Prague in Lincoln County about 9:35 p.m. Sunday. That was followed by a 2.7 magnitude quake in the same area about 3:20 a.m. Monday and a 2.8 magnitude quake in the area just after 4:15 Monday morning. No injuries or damage are reported. People as far away as Tulsa and Claremore reported feeling the 3.7 quake. /////////////////////////////////////// ICELAND - A volcano spouting lava in the south of Iceland showed signs of increased activity on Monday, leading scientists to warn it could trigger a far more powerful eruption at a nearby geological hotspot. The eruption near the Eyjafjallajokull glacier, which began shortly before midnight on Saturday, sent steam 4 kilometers up in the air and is gradually intensifying. Another scientist said he was concerned the activity could cause an eruption at Mount Katla, an "enormously powerful" volcano lying under a glacier nearby. Pandemic flu activity remained at uncharacteristically low levels for week 10 of the season, though the virus is still circulating amid anecdotal reports of increased activity in a few southern U.S. locations. The Massachusetts Department of Public Health says the state had the nation's highest rates of vaccination against both H1N1 and seasonal flu. The immunization rates in Massachusetts were 36% for H1N1 and 57% for seasonal flu, versus 21% and 37% nationwide. Limited data point to increasing pandemic flu activity in parts of Central America and the Caribbean. Other hot spots are parts of Southeast Asia and West Africa, including Thailand, Bangladesh, and Ghana. Though flu levels are declining in most of the Northern Hemisphere, influenza B is increasing in some European countries and is dominant in several Asian countries, Iran, Mongolia, and the Russian Federation. A study of pregnant women treated in intensive care units for pandemic flu in Australia and New Zealand last summer suggests that the risk of critical illness was greater during later pregnancy, when it was about 13 times higher than in nonpregnant young women. The alert status is the second level of a three-level system of warning. The Ibu volcano in West Halmahera is the only one of the 18 volcanoes at the lower No. 3 standby level. Mount Talang in Sumatra and Mount Karangetang in Sulawesi are the most recent volcanoes to have their status raised to alert. Other Indonesian volcanoes on alert include Krakatoa, Bromo, Kaba, Anak, Slamet and Lokon. Woodland Trust researchers have uncovered "striking evidence" that common spring flowering plants are coming into bloom much later than would be expected. They have had weeks of hard, white frosts and, despite the warmer weather, the soil in many parts of the country is still rock solid. The average UK flowering date of blackthorn is mid-March, and they would have expected around 1,000 sightings by now from their volunteers. So far, they have only received a handful of reports. U.S. EAST COAST - THE WEEKEND NOR'EASTER WAS THE WORST STORM IN 20 YEARS...While this past weekend’s weather may not be characterized as the “storm of the century,” it was still very significant and caused large scale power outages, tree loss, flooding and inconvenience for residents of the North Shore of Long Island. With a RECORD RAINFALL of 4.39 inches, scores of trees were down and roads were flooded. The strong nor’easter included tidal flooding, tropical storm-like conditions and wind gusts close to hurricane strength. Bayville clocked in with the second highest wind gusts on Long Island at 64 MPH. The outbreak, in Tulcea county, close to the Ukrainian border, prompted immediate security measures. These include the killing of all poultry in the infected farm and the establishment of a three kilometer protection zone and a wider "surveillance zone" around the farm with strict controls on movements in or out. "The presence of the virus was confirmed on two hens that were found dead on a small private farm. No other case has been discovered since." Romania was hit by massive bird flu outbreaks in 2005 and 2006, when more than a million poultry were slaughtered. Avian influenza or "bird flu" is a highly contagious viral disease which primarily affects birds, but on rare occasions can also be contracted by humans and other mammals. The strain of avian influenza which is currently causing concern is the highly pathogenic H5N1 responsible for affecting many countries worldwide, including parts of Asia, Africa and Europe. On Monday at least 117,000 chickens were destroyed in northern Bangladesh after an avian flu outbreak on one of the country's largest poultry farms. Tropical cyclone Thomas heading for Fiji MAY BE THE WORST CYCLONE TO EVER STRIKE THE SOUTH PACIFIC NATION. Cyclone Tomas intensified overnight and was now a category four storm. The nation was undertaking last minute preparations for a "disastrous" thrashing. The northern island of Vanua Levu was most at risk, with winds likely to peak at over 200km/h in the next 24 hours. "There's going to be a whole lot of flooding. (It's a) very destructive hurricane force area so they'll be getting quite a battering over the next 12 hours." ////////////////////////////////// Severe tropical cyclone Ului is continuing its westwards path towards the north Queens land coast. It built up rapidly from a category three on Saturday to a category five yesterday morning, but is now approaching the coast as a category four storm, and is moving west at about 10km per hour. CHILE - Chaiten Volcano remained active into early 2010. Emissions are slowing, but tremors below the volcano indicate the magma feeding the volcano is still moving. Mice infected with either 2009 or 1940 seasonal H1N1 viruses showed partial protection, which might partly explain why older people seem to have some protection against the pandemic virus. Salmonella contamination at a Nevada food-flavoring plant may trigger the recall of as many as 10,000 products. The recall has THE POTENTIAL TO BE THE LARGEST EVER by number of products, although the total isn’t yet known. PepsiCo Inc. joined Procter & Gamble Co., Nestle SA and McCormick & Co. yesterday in recalling food containing hydrolyzed vegetable protein, or HVP. The widespread use of the flavoring means more companies will follow. In uncooked, ready-to-eat products, like chips and dips, the risk is greater. Another pandemic wave seen as unlikely - European countries won't likely experience another wave of pandemic H1N1 influenza cases this spring and summer, though the virus will probably continue to circulate and be the region's dominant strain for the next flu season. However, the European Centre for Disease Prevention and Control warned that the outlook could change if there are "significant unrecognized uninfected populations" or if the pandemic virus changes to become more transmissible. Though over time all pandemics ease and the virus becomes the dominant seasonal strain, history shows the transition can happen quickly, such as in 1957, or take about two seasons, as for the 1918 and 1968 pandemics. The extent of transmission in European countries has been difficult to determine. So far, there have been few published serologic studies. The autumn-winter pandemic flu wave seemed to spread across Europe roughly from west to east and from north to south, similar to the interpandemic pattern. Though flu barometers have declined in most countries, low-level transmission and deaths continue to occur. The big question now is whether there will be enough susceptible people to sustain transmission, given the observed low transmissibility of the pandemic H1N1 virus. Transmission will depend on how many people have pre-existing immunity, how many have already been infected, and how many have been immunized. Though the European Medicines Agency is gathering vaccination information from member states, some countries rolled out the pandemic vaccine so quickly that immunization records may be sparse or slow to be tabulated. However, early indications, such as the absence of a major resurgence in most of Europe through January, suggest that there aren't enough susceptible people to sustain large-scale transmission. The report advises countries to strengthen surveillance for severe respiratory infections and deaths and determine if any patterns are seen in specific age-groups. ///////////////////////////////

Southeast and Gulf Coast schools showed slight increases in disease activity, with levels still lower than November's. Pandemic waning in China - The country's H1N1 pandemic has passed its peak. CHILE has begun to count the cost of its deadly 8.8 magnitude earthquake as nations around the Pacific eased their fears of a devastating tsunami. The quake, on Saturday morning, killed at least 708 people - 90% of them in their homes. It is feared the damage may cost tens of billions of dollars. About 1.5 million homes have been damaged and police patrols have been stepped up to deter looters. The death toll looks set to rise, following reports that about 350 people died in the town of Constitucion alone, both by the quake and the tsunami it set off. Around the city of Concepcion, whole villages have been flattened. Highways have been sliced in two and bridges have collapsed. In Santiago, the city's new buildings seemed to have survived more or less intact, but it's old buildings fell. The coastal town of Talcahuano, badly damaged by tsunami waves, is said to be the worst affected. Global flu activity wanes, but hot spots persist - Though overall pandemic activity waned across the globe, some active areas were seen in parts of south and southeast Asia and in a few areas of eastern and southeastern Europe. Brunei Darussalam reported intensifying flu activity, and overall respiratory disease increased in some countries because of influenza B and respiratory syncytial virus activity. Low levels of influenza B and seasonal H3N2 flu circulated in parts of Africa and Asia. Death toll in Japan called amazingly small - Japan's National Institute of Infectious Diseases has estimated that 20 million people in Japan, mostly children, were infected with H1N1. But fewer than 200 people in Japan have died of the illness, "an amazingly low toll." Early diagnosis and treatment apparently helped limit deaths. But the health ministry was slow to prepare for the H1N1 vaccination campaign and used a flawed communication strategy. A laboratory at Hong Kong University detected a re-assortment made up of a swine influenza virus and the pandemic H1N1 virus in a sample obtained from a slaughterhouse pig as part of a surveillance program. It is the FIRST REPORTED re-assortment BETWEEN THE TWO TYPES OF VIRUSES. The virus was detected in a pig that was imported from the Chinese mainland. The agriculture department said in statement that the finding doesn't pose a public health risk or present any food-safety issues. The finding isn't unexpected, likely occurs worldwide, and was only detected in Hong Kong because of intensive surveillance. A spokesman for Hong Kong's Center for Health Protectio said that preliminary findings suggest the re-assortment is sensitive to oseltamivir (Tamiflu). So far the new virus has not turned up in surveillance of human flu specimens obtained from Hong Kong residents. In the United States, swine surveillance suffers from a lack of food-animal research money, experts have said. Strong Earthquake hits off Nicaragua coast A strong 5.9 magnitude earthquake struck off Nicaragua's western coast on Wednesday night, the U.S. Geological Survey said, but there were no immediate reports of injuries or damage. Nicaraguan media said the quake, which struck near the border with Costa Rica, was felt in communities along the Pacific coast. Artimisinin has been highly effective, particularly in places where resistance to other drugs has developed. But now some patients along Cambodia's border with Thailand are taking longer to respond to the treatment. //////////////////////////////////// WHO gains scientists' support for H1N1 response - Some have accused the World Health Organization of hyping novel H1N1 flu, but scientists are defending the agency. USA NEVADA - Reno dug out from underneath a RECORD- SETTING SNOWSTORM this week after a RARE weather event Saturday evening and Sunday morning. The storm, which brought between 10 and 26 inches of snow to parts of the Truckee Meadows, set a record for the most snowfall in Reno for both Feb. 20 and 21. The snow fall broke records set in 1918 and 1980. The short storm also dropped the 22nd largest amount of snow of any storm to hit Reno in 115 years, a statistic made more impressive by the fact that the most recent snowfall occurred over a much shorter time than most that make that list. In a semiannual update on AVIAN influenza activity, the World Health Organization has recommended that health authorities begin developing a candidate vaccine virus for the most recently recovered isolates of avian flu strain H9N2. That subtype, which is endemic in poultry in parts of Asia and the Middle East, caused two unrelated human infections in Hong Kong in late 2009. The patients, who were mildly ill and recovered, were a 47-year-old woman and a 35-month-old child who were not related; both had traveled to mainland China. The WHO also reported that strains of H5N1 avian flu belonging to at least five different viral clades have caused poultry outbreaks since September 2009, but the agency did not recommend that any additional H5N1 candidate vaccine viruses be developed. Influenza B activity up in China, Hong Kong - The World Health Organization said though pandemic activity hasn't changed much, influenza B now accounts for 82% of flu virus detections in China and nearly 35% in Hong Kong. Red pepper cited as Salmonella-linked recall expands - The sausage company at the center of a widespread Salmonella outbreak has recalled another 115,000 pounds of products, this time citing red pepper instead of black pepper as the possible source of contamination. "The red pepper used on the product came from the same supplier that provided Daniele with black pepper that also tested positive for Salmonella." On the basis of preliminary testing, "the company believes crushed red pepper may be a possible source of Salmonella contamination." Daniele originally recalled 1.24 million pounds of salami products on Jan 23 and added recalls of about 17,000 pounds on Jan 31 and 24,000 pounds on Feb 4. Six different products are involved. The number of cases in the outbreak has risen to 230 in 44 states and Washington, DC, up from 225 cases on Feb 11. Among 168 patients with available information, 43 (26%) were hospitalized, but there have been no deaths. The outbreak began last July. The bacteria that causes whooping cough in Australia has mutated, scientists have warned, eroding the protection provided by the vaccine now given to children. Researchers have identified significant changes in the two most common strains of the Bordetella pertussis bacteria, which they also traced back to events in the late 1990s. Australian children were given a broad-acting "whole cell" vaccination against whooping cough up to 1997, but this was phased out over two years and replaced with a more targeted version. Concerns over potential side-effects were behind the change over to a vaccine with a narrower scope, but this now appears to have contributed to the promotion of resistant strains. The discovery comes amid an increase in whooping cough cases in Australia, with several significant outbreaks seen last year in western Sydney. Although acute myocarditis as a complication of a viral infection is fairly rare, physicians from a San Diego children's hospital described four cases that occurred in a 30-day period in children who had pandemic H1N1 infections. Of three children who had fulminant myocarditis, one died and two required extracorporeal membrane oxygenation. The fourth had acute perimyocarditis. Minnesota - Seasonal flu viruses have been almost absent this winter and experts are increasingly confident that pandemic H1N1 will be the only virus around for the rest of the winter. One person had preexisting flu and bacterial infections and one was a cardiac patient whose death was caused by cardiovascular disease. The cause of the third person's death is still being evaluated. Third-hand smoke - Lingering residue from tobacco smoke which clings to upholstery, clothing and the skin releases cancer-causing agents. Scientists ran lab tests and found "substantial levels" of toxins on smoke-exposed material. They say while banishing smokers to outdoors cuts second-hand smoke, residues will follow them back inside and this "third-hand smoke" may harm. PAKISTAN - A volcano has started spewing lava in Ziarat District of Balochistan, some 75 kilometers away from Quetta. The volcanic activity occurred in Jhari area of Ziarat at Torghar Mountain on Monday night. Residents of the nearby area claimed the fire fumes at top of the mountain in the night were witnessed for the last few days, while on Monday night the mountain started spewing lava. ////////////////////////////// ECUADOR - Activity at Tungurahua volcano is increasing. It hasn't really made it to much of the English-speaking news, but the current eruptive activity at Tungurahua appears to be on the up-tick. H5N1 may be outwitting poultry vaccines - An Indonesian virologist says the H5N1 avian influenza virus in Indonesia may have evolved so as to make the poultry vaccines used there less effective. Viral mutations may explain a series of outbreaks in Indonesian flocks over the past 2 years and he has "strong evidence" that vaccines based on the Legok virus are not effective against newer strains. "We need to see whether the changes increase the capacity of the virus to infect the human respiratory system." Cambodia, Vietnam report H5N1 outbreaks - Cambodian authorities began culling ducks yesterday to control an H5N1 avian flu outbreak that killed more than 15,000 ducks last week in the southern province of Takeo. Meanwhile, more than 1,000 ducks were infected with avian flu on a farm in Vietnam's central province of Quang Tri, leading to the culling of another 1,000 ducks, vaccination of 8,300, and other control measure. The 4.4 magnitude earthquake struck at 6:20 a.m. It was centered in the Pacific, about 31 miles southwest of Rosarito Beach and 42 miles south southwest of Imperial Beach.
