Glaxo to have swine flu vaccine by September

In a raft of announcements relating to swine flu, the UK's largest drug company said it would be able to produce 190m doses per year of Relenza within months.

It also said it had received approval for a new disposable antiviral face mask which worked against all previous strains of bird and swine flu.

The mask has yet to be tested against the current strain of swine flu although chief executive Andrew Witty said he was confident it would be effective. Although GSK did not expect to start delivery of its vaccine until later this year.

Mysterious illness kills 3 AU troops

At least three African Union soldiers serving in the peacekeeping mission in Somalia have died in the Kenyan capital of Nairobi under mysterious circumstances. Sources within the AU said that the cause of the mysterious illness that led to the death of Burundian soldiers based in Mogadishu was unknown but investigations were underway for possibility of water poisoning.

Major Barigye Bahoku, the Commander of AU troops in Somalia confirmed that 16 other soldiers were admitted at a Nairobi hospital, adding that "they may have been bitten by some insects that caused the illness". AU sources said a team of experts has been dispatched to Somalia to investigate

BRITISH SWINE FLU CASES RISE BY NEARLY 50% IN A WEEK

Fresh figures showing the rapid spread of swine flu across the UK will be released this afternoon as returns from GP surgeries show a rise of almost 50% in the last week.

The briefing from Sir Liam Donaldson, the government's chief medical officer, will provide updates on infection rates, numbers being treated in hospital and whether there have been more deaths.

Surveillance data from the Health Protection Agency will give a clearer picture of the progress of the pandemic. The death toll from the H1N1 virus stands at 16. The government is expected to announce the launch of a national swine flu helpline.

The flu is spreading fast across much of Britain and the total of those affected rose by 46% in the seven days up to last Sunday, according to data provided by family doctors.

Health ministers from across the UK – including those from Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland – are now attending weekly meetings of the government's civil contingencies committee, Cobra, to assess the impact of the disease.

Information collected by the Royal College of General Practitioners' research and surveillance centre in Birmingham, which monitors communicable and respiratory disease, shows that the rate of people diagnosed with influenza-like illness in the north of England leapt from 6.6 per 100,000 of population from 29 June to 6 July to 37.2 per 100,000 between 6 and 16 July – almost a sixfold increase.

It more than doubled in central England from 42.8 to 93.9 per 100,000 but only rose slightly in the south from 72.1 to 74.9 per 100,000. However, cases in London – the swine flu ‘hotspot’ along with the West Midlands – declined from about 180 to 140 per 100,000. Across England, the incidence increased from 50.3 to 73.42 during that week, a rise of 46%.

Professor Steve Field, the chairman of the Royal College, said: ‘Swine flu is spreading rapidly across the whole of the country now. GPs are saying that they are coming under a lot of pressure from patients who have it and many GPs say that the publicity surrounding the death of six-year-old London schoolgirl Chloe Buckley has increased demand and made people more anxious, although there is no reason for them to be so.’

Children between five and 14 remain the worst affected, with an incidence rate of 160 per 100,000. The rate among under-fives is 114 per 100,000 and 89.4 among those aged 15-44

Ebola found in pigs for first time raising fears it could mutate and threaten humans

Reston ebolavirus (Rebov) has only been seen in monkeys and humans previously and, unlike other types of Ebola, it is not known to cause illness in people. Researchers say it is theoretically possible for the virus to mutate in pigs into a form that might sicken people. The Philippines had tested 141 people, the researchers said, and six of them who either worked on pig farms or with swine products were found with antibodies to the Ebola-Reston virus, which means they might have been infected by pigs at some time.

UK SWINE FLU CAN NO LONGER BE CONTAINED

Swine flu is spreading so rapidly across Britain that there could be 100,000 new cases a day by the end of next month, the health secretary, Andy Burnham, said today.

The UK would immediately move to the ‘treatment phase’ of its plan to combat swine flu, meaning doctors would no longer test for the H1N1 virus and urge anyone with symptoms to stay at home, Burnham told the House of Commons.

The first swine flu vaccine would be made available from August, with 60 million doses available by the end of the year, he added.

‘We have reached the next stage in management of the disease,’ Burnham said. ‘The national focus will be on treating the increasing numbers affected by swine flu. We will move to this treatment phase across the UK with immediate effect.’

The move does not mean the H1N1 virus, which was declared a pandemic by the World Health Organization last month, is becoming more deadly, just that it can no longer be contained.

Burnham said there was a ‘considerable rise’ in swine flu cases last week.

‘We have always known it would be impossible to contain the virus indefinitely and at some point we would need to move away from containment to treatment.

‘Cases are doubling every week and on this trend we could see over 100,000 cases per day by the end of August.

‘The pressure on the system is such that it is the right time to take this step. Scientists can expect to see rapid rises in the number of cases.’

The Health Protection Agency today announced that another 518 patients in England had been confirmed with swine flu, while the figure for the UK as a whole rose to 7,447

SWINE FLU 'SHOWS DRUG RESISTANCE'

Experts have reported the first case of swine flu that is resistant to tamiflu - the main drug being used to fight the pandemic.

Roche Holding AG confirmed a patient with H1N1 influenza in Denmark showed resistance to the antiviral drug.

David Reddy, company executive, said it was not unexpected given that common seasonal flu could do the same.

The news comes as a nine-year-old girl has become the third to die in the UK with swine flu.

It is understood from her doctors at Birmingham Children's Hospital that she had underlying health conditions. It is not yet known whether swine flu contributed to her death.

Meanwhile, the Department of Health has announced a big jump in the number of patients in England confirmed with swine flu - up 1,604 since Friday, taking the UK total so far to 5,937.

Experts have been using tamiflu, also known as oseltamivir, in a bid to stop the H1N1 spreading in communities.

If taken early, it ensures that symptoms are mild and reduces the chance of a victim giving the illness to someone else.

This first reported case of resistance developed in a swine flu patient taking Tamiflu.

Mr. Reddy stressed that there were no signs of a tamiflu-resistant strain of H1N1 circulating in the community

Officials consider massive 600M-dose swine flu vaccine campaign

A potential fall swine flu immunization campaign may involve an unprecedented 600 million doses of vaccine, but health officials are still trying to figure out how to find enough workers to administer all those shots.

Inventory Uncovers 9,200 More Pathogens

An inventory of potentially deadly pathogens at Fort Detrick's infectious disease laboratory found more than 9,000 vials that had not been accounted for, Army officials said yesterday, raising concerns that officials wouldn't know whether dangerous toxins were missing. After four months of searching about 335 freezers and refrigerators at the U.S. Army Medical Research Institute of Infectious Diseases in Frederick, investigators found 9,220 samples that hadn't been included in a database of about 66,000 items listed as of February, said Col. Mark Kortepeter, the institute's deputy commander. The vials contained some dangerous pathogens, among them the Ebola virus, anthrax bacteria and botulinum toxin, and less lethal agents such as Venezuelan equine encephalitis virus and the bacterium that causes tularemia. Most of them, forgotten inside freezer drawers, hadn't been used in years or even decades. Officials said some serum samples from hemorrhagic fever patients dated to the Korean War.

Gout cases increasing in United States

Pharmaceutical companies are working on new medications for gout as experts say up to six million U.S. residents may have the disease. A new gout medication was approved by the Food and Drug Administration this year for the first time in more than four decades. But studies indicate the number of gout cases nationwide may have doubled during the last 30 years. The disease typically strikes older individuals and is up to four times more common in men than women. It is said that gout begins with occasional painful attacks but the attacks increase in frequency as the disease begins to create crystallized deposits called tophi that can be disabling.

N.M. county facing bubonic plague cases

Health Department officials say residents of Santa Fe County, N.M., should take precautions amid three confirmed cases of bubonic plague in the county. The state public health veterinarian said residents also need to be cautious with pets that are allowed outside because the county is seeing a number of bubonic plague cases involving animals. Symptoms of bubonic plague include swollen lymph nodes and a high fever. The bacterial disease has been known to be spread by fleas and rodents, the newspaper said.

AUSTRALIA FLU 'MAY TIP PANDEMIC'

A sharp increase in swine flu cases in Australia may mean the infection has become a pandemic, the World Health Organization says.

For that to happen, officials would have to verify that the disease had become established outside North America, where the crisis began.

‘Once I get indisputable evidence, I will make the announcement,’ said WHO director general, Margaret Chan.

More than 1,200 people have contracted the virus in Australia - none fatally.

The total means Australia has seen a four-fold increase in a week.

Less than a month ago the country had only a handful of cases of the H1N1 virus but it now has the highest number of infections outside North America.

Victoria and the state capital, Melbourne, are the worst-hit with more than 1,000 confirmed cases.

Most of those affected are suffering only a mild illness, but the Health Minister of Australia's Queenland state, Paul Lucas, has warned that the contagious respiratory condition would inevitably claim lives.

On Tuesday, the head of the WHO's global influenza program, Keiji Fukuda, said the situation had ‘evolved a lot’ in recent days.

‘We are getting close to knowing that we are in a pandemic situation,’ he said

Some antidepressants may risk breast cancer return

Breast cancer survivors risk having their disease come back if they use certain antidepressants while also taking the cancer prevention drug tamoxifen, worrisome new research shows. About 500,000 women in the United States take tamoxifen, which cuts in half the chances of a breast cancer recurrence. Many of them also take antidepressants for hot flashes, because hormone pills aren't considered safe after breast cancer. The new study found that using these interfering drugs — including Prozac, Paxil or Zoloft — can virtually wipe out the benefit tamoxifen provides.

ADHD treatment causes young boys to develop female breasts

Two more New Yorkers infected with swine flu have died, health officials announced

It is not known if the H1N1 virus caused the latest two fatalities - a 41-year-old woman from Queens and a 34-year-old man from Brooklyn.

The new cases bring to four the number of New Yorkers who have died after catching swine flu, said city health commissioner Thomas Frieden said.

"Until the medical examiner's report comes out, we won't know what else was going on," Frieden said at a news conference.

The deaths come just two days after the city announced a 56-year-old woman from Queens died from swine flu and more than a week after Assistant Principal Mitchell Wiener from Intermediate School 238 in Queens became the first person in the city to die from the illness.

Frieden did not release the names or other details about the two latest victims.

U.S. HEALTH OFFICIALS TROUBLED BY NEW FLU PATTERN

The new influenza strain circulating around most of the United States is putting a worrying number of young adults and children into the hospital and hitting more schools than usual, U.S. health officials said on Monday.

The H1N1 swine flu virus killed a vice principal at a New York City school over the weekend and has spread to 48 states. While it appears to be mild, it is affecting a disproportionate number of children, teenagers and young adults.

This includes people needing hospitalization -- now up to 200, said Dr. Anne Schuchat of the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

‘That's very unusual, to have so many people under 20 to require hospitalization, and some of them in (intensive care units),’ Schuchat told reporters in a telephone briefing.

‘We are now experiencing levels of influenza-like illness that are higher than usual for this time of year,’ Schuchat added. ‘We are also seeing outbreaks in schools, which is extremely unusual for this time of year.’

New York City Health Commissioner Dr. Thomas Frieden agreed with Schuchat.

‘We're seeing increasing numbers of people going to emergency departments saying they have fever and flu, particularly young people in the 5 to 17 age group, ‘ Frieden, who has been named by U.S. President Barack Obama as the new CDC director, told a news conference.

About half of all cases of influenza are being diagnosed as the new H1N1 strain, while the rest are influenza B, or the seasonal H1N1 and H3N2 strains. Flu season in the United States is usually almost over by May.

GLOBAL SWINE FLU CASES ON THE RISE

The United States has confirmed its fourth death from swine influenza A-H1N1.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention said Friday there are more than 4,700 confirmed and probable cases of the virus in the United States, spread out in nearly every state.

The latest death was a woman in the state of Arizona who had a lung condition.

The World Health Organization said Friday the illness has been confirmed in 34 countries. That count does not include Malaysia and Peru, which both confirmed their first cases this week.

The WHO said Mexico has confirmed nearly 2,500 cases of the illness, including 60 deaths. Canada and Costa Rica each have confirmed one death.

The WHO said the outbreak has not become a pandemic, and it is not recommending travel restrictions related to the virus.

Meanwhile, New York City has shut down three schools for a week in response to a new outbreak in the city. A school employee has been hospitalized in critical condition, and several students have been infected.

Product recall: bacteria-tainted face paint

The FDA warned consumers to stop using face paints commonly dabbed on children's cheeks at parties, sporting events and other festivities and sold in retail stores. The six face-paint products are being recalled after reports of rashes and skin irritation. Fun Express Inc., which recalled the products, said in a statement that it sold the affected items to 130 customers and 95% of these sales were before January. The face paints were made in China by Shanghai Color Art Stationery Company Ltd.

Confirmed H1N1 cases rise to 100 in Spain: health minister

The number of human cases of influenza A/H1N1 in Spain has risen to 100 after two new cases had been confirmed, a health official said Tuesday.

-According to the Health Ministry, Valencia has 15 confirmed cases, the highest in Spain, followed by Catalonia with five, Andalucia with two and Madrid with one.

Most of the confirmed cases had recently been in Mexico, while 22 others were infected in Spain, the ministry said.

Confirmed A/H1N1 flu cases in U.S. rise to 3,009

The number of confirmed human A/H1N1 cases has risen to 3009 in 45 U.S. states, with three deaths, the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) reported Tuesday.

According to the CDC, the state of Illinois has 554 confirmed cases of the A/H1N1 flu, followed by 437 of Wisconsin, 206 of Texas, 193 of California, 192 of New York and 187 of Arizona.

The number of confirmed cases on Monday was 2,600 in 44 states.

Raccoon Ringworm disease hits Brooklyn teen and baby

Fewer than 30 cases of Raccoon Ringworm have been reported nationwide.

A rare, deadly disease that has left an infant brain damaged and a teenager blind in one eye, has been detected in Brooklyn, the Daily News has learned.

The city's Department of Health is on alert for Raccoon Ringworm, a disease contracted through contact with raccoon feces. It can cause permanent nerve damage and death.

'TOO LATE' TO CONTAIN SWINE FLU

The swine flu virus first detected in Mexico can no longer be contained and countries should focus on mitigating its effects, a top UN official said.

World Health Organization deputy chief Keiji Fukuda was speaking as the WHO raised its alert level to four, or two steps short of a full pandemic.

UN food inspectors are going to Mexico to examine reports that industrial pig farms were the source of the outbreak.

The number of probable deaths from the virus there has risen to 152.

New Zealand confirmed at least three cases on Tuesday, and Israel one.

The US, Canada, Spain and Britain confirmed cases earlier but no deaths have been reported outside Mexico.

Alert level four means the virus is showing a sustained ability to pass from human to human and is able to cause community-level outbreaks.

Mr. Fukuda said this was a ‘significant step towards pandemic influenza’ but a pandemic should not be considered inevitable.

Experts did not recommend closing borders or restricting travel, he stressed.

‘With the virus being widespread... closing borders or restricting travel really has very little effects in stopping the movement of this virus,’ he said.

The first batches of a swine flu vaccine could be ready in four to six months' time but it will take several more months to produce large quantities of it, Mr. Fukuda said.

Health experts say the virus comes from the same strain that causes seasonal outbreaks in humans but also contains genetic material from versions of flu which usually affect pigs and birds

U.S. DECLARES PUBLIC HEALTH EMERGENCY IN WAKE OF SWINE FLU

The United States has activated an emergency plan to combat swine flu as the Obama administration announced measures Sunday to contain the sometimes deadly virus.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention has identified the strain of swine flu and is prepared to distribute a quarter of the U.S. stockpile of 50 million doses of anti-viral medications in places around the country where swine flu has been located or may be expected to spread, Homeland Security Secretary Janet Napolitano said in a briefing at the White House.

Travel advisories have not been issued by the State Department, Napolitano said, nor is the United States going to screen passengers on flights arriving from Mexico. She said funds have been freed up in case a larger response is needed.

Hand-washing, mask-wearing and other measures will help prevent the spread, Napolitano said explaining how the public can help slow potential contaminations.

‘If you are sick, stay home,’ Napolitano said. ‘Take all of those reasonable measures that will help us mitigate and contain’ the illness.

People who are ill should not go on airplanes, to school or other places, added Dr. Richard Besser, the acting head of the CDC.

Besser said the United States is working with the World Health Organization, Canada and Mexico as well as other organizations to reduce the spread of the virus, which appears to have originated in Mexico and has resulted in up to 81 deaths there.

The CDC has issued advice on its Web site on how to avoid the sickness and how to react if people think they are infected

At least 100 people are now suspected to have died of the disease in Mexico.

In Europe, health ministers called for an urgent meeting as one case of swine flu was confirmed in Spain.

The UN has warned the virus has the potential to become a pandemic, but said the world was better prepared than ever to deal with the threat.

Stocks of anti-viral medicines are being readied and travellers are being screened at some airports for symptoms.

Mexican Health Secretary Jose Angel Cordova said suspected swine flu cases in his country had risen to 1,614.

Of the 103 deaths in Mexico, only 20 are so far confirmed to have been caused by the new virus.

A public health emergency has been declared in the US, where 20 people are confirmed to have caught the virus.

There are also six confirmed cases in Canada and one in Spain, where at least 17 other people are being tested for the virus.

Investigations are being carried out on possible cases in five other countries.

In most cases outside Mexico, people have been only mildly ill and have made a full recovery

Meningitis outbreak reported in Miami

Health officials in Miami announced an apparent outbreak of meningitis that has killed four people and sickened 12. The victims were infected with an unusual and unusually virulent strain of the disease, W135. Only about 3% of meningitis cases around the world are caused by that strain of virus.

U.S. takes swine flu precautions-potential pandemic

With 81 people dead and 1,000 ill with swine flu in Mexico, officials in the United States are taking extra precautions against the disease. It has the potential to become a pandemic. Two cases of the human swine influenza have been confirmed in Kansas and one more in California. It is a unique version of the virus -- one that combines genetic material from pigs, birds and humans -- that has never seen before in the U.S. At least eight students at a New York City high school have swine flu also.

WHO declares international concern over swine flu

The World Health Organization warned countries around the world to be on alert for any unusual flu outbreaks after a unique new swine flu virus was implicated in possibly dozens of human deaths in North America. WHO Director-General Margaret Chan said the outbreak in Mexico and the United States constituted a "public health emergency of international concern." The decision means countries around the world will be asked to step up reporting and surveillance of the disease, which she said had "pandemic potential" because it is an animal virus strain infecting people.

Countries planned quarantines, tightened rules on pork imports and tested airline passengers for fevers as global health officials tried to come up with uniform ways to battle a deadly strain of swine flu. Nations from New Zealand to France reported new suspected cases. Governments including China, Russia and Taiwan began planning to put anyone with symptoms of the deadly virus under quarantine. Others were increasing their screening of pigs and pork imports from the Americas or banning them outright despite health officials' reassurances that it was safe to eat thoroughly cooked pork.

International officials Saturday declared the swine flu outbreak in Mexico and the U.S. a "PUBLIC HEALTH EMERGENCY" as new cases were reported on both sides of the border and fears grew of a possible global epidemic. The Mexican government indicated that the outbreak was more severe than originally acknowledged. Saturday, the Mexican government gave itself extraordinary powers to quarantine and forcibly treat infected people and to search homes and intercept suspected flu sufferers on public transport. The national Centers for Disease Control and Prevention in Atlanta said they expected more cases and that containment was "not feasible." "Having found the virus where we have found it, we are likely to find it in many more places. It is clear that this is widespread, which is why we do not think we can contain spread of this virus." For many Mexicans, initial alarm over the outbreak was giving way to anger over the health crisis and skepticism about how the government was handling it. Mexico's flu season was intense and people were dying long before the government sounded the alarm Thursday, after a Canadian testing laboratory identified the unique strain, a mix of human, bird and swine flu viruses. "The government is just trying to distract us from other problems, like the economic crisis. Or maybe it's even worse than they're saying?"

The Mexican authorities say 81 people may have died from the new swine flu virus which the WHO says could lead to a pandemic. Public buildings have been closed and people told to stay at home in an attempt to prevent the spread of infection. Hundreds of public events have been suspended in Mexico and schools in and around the capital, Mexico City, have been closed until 6 May. A total of 1,324 people had been admitted to hospital with suspected symptoms since 13 April and were being tested for the virus. The virus is spread mainly through coughs and sneezes.

In the US, 11 people are now confirmed to have been infected with the new strain - seven people in California, two in Texas, and two in Kansas. Eight suspected cases are being investigated at a New York City high school where about 200 students fell mildly ill with flu-like symptoms. The US was likely to take "normal and routine" steps within the next few days to screen passengers coming into the US and to distribute information.

Many public health officials had speculated that WHO might advise raising the pandemic alert level from phase 3 to 4, but it has yet to take that step.

The Kansas Department of Health and Environment said that the two patients who tested positive for the swine flu A/H1N1 strain circulating in the United States and Mexico are both adults who live in the same household, one of whom had recently traveled to Mexico. Neither was hospitalized. One of the patients is still sick and is being treated, and the other is recovering.

The New York City Department of Health and Mental Hygiene announced that 8 of 9 samples obtained from students sickened at a private high school [St. Francis] were positive for an untyped influenza A strain. Those findings suggest human swine flu.

The New York City health department has received calls about students from Manhattan, not associated with Saint Francis, who were sick and undergoing medical evaluation after traveling to Mexico for spring break. The department is also investigating a respiratory illness outbreak at a daycare center in the Bronx.

In the first wave of the 1918 influenza pandemic in the spring, many cases were mild, but by late July and early August, the virus caused widespread, severe illness.

A key task for the public health community right now extends beyond tangible items such as stockpiles of food, drugs, and supplies. "Preparing is also envisioning how bad a pandemic could be." Some degree of anxiety and feeling a knot in the stomach is a crucial part of an adjustment reaction. Evidence has shown that those who can envision what could happen down the road do better at coping with a crisis situation.

South Florida warned about rare meningitis strain that has killed 4

Health officials are warning residents who exhibit certain symptoms to visit their doctor in the wake of several deaths related to a rare and deadly strain of meningitis. The strain, called W135, is fast-acting and can kill a person within hours of symptoms arising, said Dr. Vincent Conte, senior physician at the Miami-Dade Department of Health. The county did not provide more precise information about the cases, including names or dates.

Swine flu cases in Calif. worry health officials

Health officials have diagnosed a unique type of swine flu in two California children, but it's unclear whether many people will be susceptible to the infection.

The two children were diagnosed last week. One was a 10-year-old boy in San Diego County, and the other a 9-year-old girl in neighboring Imperial County. Both recovered.

The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention alerted doctors Tuesday, but said there's no reason for the public to take unusual measures.

The virus is resistant to two common antiviral medications, and health officials think the seasonal flu vaccine may not protect against it.

Tamiflu may increase abnormal acts

Researchers from Japan's Health, Labor and Welfare Ministry say Tamiflu apparently increases abnormal psychological behavior in young influenza patients. The team, led by Osaka City University Professor Yoshio Hirota, said its study revealed influenza patients between the ages of 10 and 17 were more likely to exhibit serious abnormal behavior if they consumed the antiviral medication. Tamiflu was banned by the Japanese ministry in 2007 for use on 10- to 19-year-olds after delirious behavior was observed in some children taking the drug.

Egypt: Concern over bird flu cases

The World Health Organization is concerned that some Egyptians may carry the highly pathogenic bird flu virus without showing symptoms, reports Reuters.

"This is a concern only, now. It is a question to be asked," said Jabbour, adding that a change in the pattern of human bird flu infections this year in Egypt had raised concerns about the existence of so-called sub clinical cases.

The emergence of symptomless human carriers of the virus would be a worrisome development because it could allow the virus, undetected and untreated, more time to mutate inside the human body, Jabbour added.

Most Injection Drug Users in Tijuana Have Tuberculosis

A new study from UCSD reveals two-thirds of IV drug users in Tijuana test positive for tuberculosis. People who shoot drugs are also at high risk for HIV infection. UCSD researchers tested more than a thousand IV drug users in Tijuana, Mexico.

Researchers found 67% had the latent form of tuberculosis. This form of the disease is not contagious. However, health officials say people who test positive and inject drugs are at high risk of developing active TB.

Doctor-in-training had infection and may have exposed hundreds

Three area hospitals around Chicago Illinois where hundreds may have been exposed to tuberculosis from a doctor-in-training were still working to contact patients and narrow down how many people were at risk. So far no one has tested positive for TB, though only a small number of patients apparently have been tested, hospital officials said.

WHO CALLS FOR QUICK ACTION TO STOP SPREAD OF DRUG-RESISTANT TB

The director of the World Health Organization says drug-resistant strains of tuberculosis are poised to ‘spiral out of control.’

WHO director Margaret Chan says out of more than nine million people who are infected with tuberculosis every year, more than half a million contract a drug-resistant variety.

‘This is the true alarm bell,’ she said. ‘This tells us that resistant strains are now circulating in the general population, spreading widely and largely silently in a growing pool of latent infection.’

Last year's rates of drug-resistant tuberculosis were the highest ever recorded. Yet the World Health Organization estimates less than five percent of drug-resistant TB cases are detected, and fewer than three percent are treated.

The disease is particularly widespread in countries such as China, Russia and Brazil, where health-care systems may be stretched too thinly, and in South Africa, where tuberculosis is found among many of the country's AIDS victims.

In addition, 55 countries have reported at least one case of extensively drug-resistant tuberculosis. That strain is virtually untreatable.

China is second only to India in terms of drug-resistant infections, with 112,000 cases in 2007. In China, 4.5 million people have tuberculosis, and more than 200,000 a year die from the illness

Study: Wind spreads disease faster than thought

Plant and human diseases that travel with the wind can spread more quickly than previously believed, according to a study at Oregon State University and elsewhere. The findings cause concern not only for some human diseases but also a new fungus that threatens global wheat production.

The research concludes that invading diseases do not always progress in an orderly, constant rate and that some airborne pathogens can actually accelerate as they move.

"It's now becoming clear that some types of diseases can spread more rapidly and widely than we anticipated," said Chris Mundt, a professor of plant pathology at OSU. "This makes it especially important, in some cases, to stop a spreading disease quickly if you hope to stop it at all."

The studies explain, in part, how West Nile Virus spread so rapidly across the United States when experts had been expecting a slower movement.

UK THIRTEEN DIE AFTER C. DIFF OUTBREAK AT HOSPITAL

Thirteen patients have died after an outbreak of C. diff at Eastbourne District General Hospital in East Sussex.

Three died as a direct result of clostridium difficile while the bug was linked to a further 10 deaths at the hospital.

A further 17 patients are still being treated for the fatal infection.

The deaths were revealed at a press conference following a week of ward closures as the hospital battles to contain the problem.

A special isolation ward has been opened and patients were last week diverted to other sites up to 30 miles away for operations while cleaning work is carried out.

The increase in cases is thought to be due to the high number of patients admitted with respiratory infections.

C. diff is the major cause of antibiotic-associated diarrhea and colitis, an infection of the intestines.

The bacterium, which lives in the gut, multiplies when doses of antibiotics disturb the natural balance of germs in the body - causing severe complications for the elderly and those already suffering a serious illness.

A spokesman for East Sussex Hospitals NHS Trust, which runs the hospital, said: ‘The trust continues to keep the situation under close review and maintains the most stringent measures to contain the spread of this infection.

‘A dedicated facility for patients with C. diff has been established on East Dean ward.

‘The ward has been staffed with a dedicated workforce of nurses and doctors working to recognized national guidelines.

‘The trust has also invested £100,000 to purchase a number of specialist hydrogen peroxide vaporization system units.

‘These are used to ensure that every surface in the area being treated is covered and ensuring that any C. diff spores are destroyed

Cases Of Lyme Disease Rapidly Growing In California

Long thought of as an East Coast problem, cases of reported Lyme disease are growing in California and around the country.

Lyme disease is caused by a bacteria and transmitted by the Western black-legged tick. It has been found in most counties in California; hot spots include Mendocino and Humbolt counties and the western slope of the Sierra Nevada.

ATM-like machines now dispensing drugs

A Canadian banking-like machine that dispenses prescription drugs is getting good reviews after several months of trials at a Toronto hospital.

The machines carry 340 different kinds of widely prescribed drugs, and once the pharmacist has verified the device has picked the right product, the machine dispenses the order.

The Sunnybrook Health Sciences Center installed the PharmaTrust kiosks in June, and in a three-month period, some 800 patients used the machines to obtain 1,200 prescriptions between June and September.

Of them, 95% said they had their drugs within five minutes, and none of them got the wrong drugs.

Considered a 'Severe' Epidemic, Every Mode of Transmission Is Increasing, City Study Finds

At least 3 percent of District residents have HIV or AIDS, a total that far surpasses the 1 percent threshold that constitutes a "generalized and severe" epidemic, according to a report scheduled to be released by health officials tomorrow.

That translates into 2,984 residents per every 100,000 over the age of 12 -- or 15,120 -- according to the 2008 epidemiology report by the District's HIV/AIDS office.

"Our rates are higher than West Africa," said Shannon L. Hader, director of the District's HIV/AIDS Administration, who once led the Federal Centers for Disease Control and Prevention's work in Zimbabwe. "They're on par with Uganda and some parts of Kenya."

"We have every mode of transmission" -- men having sex with men, heterosexual and injected drug use -- "going up, all on the rise, and we have to deal with them," Hader said.

New bacteria discovered in stratosphere

Scientists in India say they've found three species of bacteria in the stratosphere, all of which are alien to Earth and resistant to ultraviolet radiation. In all, 12 bacterial and 6 fungal colonies were detected, 9 of which showed greater than 98% similarity with known species on Earth, the researchers said. Three bacterial colonies were deemed new species.

The experiment was conducted using a 26.7-million-cubic-foot balloon flown from the National Balloon Facility in Hyderabad, India. The payload consisted of a cryosampler containing 16 evacuated and sterilized stainless steel probes that were immersed in liquid neon to create a cryopump effect. The cylinders, after collecting air samples from different heights, were parachuted to Earth and retrieved.

Woman, 5th person to die from mad cow disease in Spain

A Spaniard has died from the human form of mad cow disease, the fifth such death in Spain since 2005, the Ministry of Health said in a statement.

The victim died in January in the northern city of Santander, according to the statement, which did not provide further details.

The victim was a woman who was hospitalized last fall, according to Juan Jose Badiola, director of Spain's national research center for mad cow disease.

The ministry reiterated that there is no danger from eating meat in Spain.

"The appearance of these sporadic cases is within the predictions that were made at the European level more than nine years ago," the ministry statement said.

Noro-Virus outbreak makes More than 100 Passengers get sick aboard cruise ship

A Holland American cruise ship returned to San Diego from Mexico after more than 100 passengers contracted the norovirus and became sick.

Broadcast reports said about 2,600 passengers were on the MS Oosterdam when the crew declared a "code red" after the first night of the cruise.

Events were canceled and the boat returned to San Diego on Saturday after some passengers and several crew members got the norovirus, a stomach flu that made them sick with diarrhea, vomiting and other symptoms.

It wasn't immediately known what the source of the virus was.

Antibiotic-resistant superbug infections among children on the rise

It was 10 a.m. on a recent weekday and the emergency room at Scottish Rite Children's Hospital in Atlanta, Georgia, was quiet, except for a little boy crying in room 45.

Two-year-old Talan, with Trisha and Jeremy Williamson, has been battling a recurring MRSA infection.

Two-year-old Talan Williamson was battling a painful staph infection. It's not just any infection, but the kind that most parents dread: methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus or MRSA.

"I'm scared," said his mother, Trisha Williamson, 24, of Cartersville, Georgia. "I'm scared and frustrated. I want answers to why we cannot get rid of it."

Doctors claim they are seeing more and more cases of MRSA in children. The bacteria are resistant to most common antibiotics, so they have to turn to a small handful of stronger ones.

But doctors want to use the stronger antibiotics as a last resort, fearing that they, too, will become ineffective over time.

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, an estimated 95,000 people in the United States developed serious MRSA infections in 2005 (the latest data available).

Flu strain proves resistant to medication

A virulent strain of influenza sowing misery across the United States is proving resistant to what had been until recently the most effective anti-viral drugs, according to a new study.

A report in the Journal of the American Medical Association (JAMA) found that the H1N1 subtype of influenza "A" viruses commonly proved resistant to the popular drug o-sel-tami-vir.

Scientists warn of drug-resistant 'super-flu

A new drug-resistant “super-flu” has become increasingly common and may pose a serious risk to hospital patients, scientists have warned.

Two research papers, published in the Journal of the American Medical Association, show that a drug-resistant mutation of the H1N1 influenza A virus, a strain which causes common seasonal outbreaks, has spread rapidly round the world.

The new subtype cannot be treated with the antiviral drug oseltamivir, known as Tamiflu, which is one of the first lines of defense used for people most vulnerable to flu.

Scientists said that the new studies showed that the virus was a particular risk to people in hospital with weakened immune systems and underlined the need to develop new drug treatments and improve staff vaccination rates.

The two papers, by American and Dutch research teams, come amid concerns about the growing prevalence of flu in healthcare settings in Britain and the failure of frontline NHS staff to get immunized to stop them spreading the virus.

It was revealed that Department of Health data, to be published this month, show that just 14 per cent of health workers had a flu jab last year, despite warnings from NHS leaders that all must do so to minimize risks to patients.

A flu outbreak at Royal Liverpool University Hospital in December resulted in almost 100 patients — many in high-dependency wards for blood diseases and kidney problems — and 20 staff being infected with the virus.

It was identified as a Tamiflu-resistant strain and a second medication had to be used to treat and protect patients and control the outbreak. The Health Protection Agency, which commended Royal Liverpool’s rapid response, said the incident was a timely warning of how easily flu can

spread when the virus is circulating in the community and staff vaccination levels are low.

The Dutch research team led by Jairo Gooskens, from Leiden University Medical Centre, said the rapid spread of resistant H1N1 flu strains had been observed since January 2008. Viruses with the gene mutation, labeled H274Y, were originally thought to be less virulent and less easily transmitted.

Dr Gooskens’ team identified four hospital patients with the resistant flu virus and found they were most likely to have been infected in hospital. Two patients were stem cell recipients and another was elderly.

Three of those affected developed pneumonia and two died, all of whom had weakened immune systems. Five health care workers also developed a flu-like illness, but virus samples had not been taken so their possible role in transmitting the infection could not be confirmed.

The authors wrote: “The study confirmed that circulating H274Y-mutated A (H1N1) viruses can retain significant pathogenicity and lethality... underling the urgency for the introduction of new and effective antiviral agents and therapeutic strategies.”

The US team led by Nila Dharan, from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention in Atlanta, Georgia, found that 12 per cent of influenza A (H1N1) viruses tested during the 2007-2008 flu season were resistant to Tamiflu.

But preliminary findings from the 2008-2009 season suggested much higher levels of Tamiflu resistance. As of February 19 this year, resistant strains had been identified among 264 out of 268 — or 98.5 per cent — of influenza A (H1N1) viruses tested in the US.

The researchers examined data on 99 people infected with Tamiflu-resistant flu during the 2007-2008 influenza season. Five patients needed hospital treatment and four died.

“The emergence of oseltamivir resistance has highlighted the need for the development of new antiviral drugs and rapid diagnostic tests that determine viral subtype or resistance, as well as improved representative ness and timeliness of national influenza surveillance for antiviral resistance,” the scientists wrote.

In an accompanying editorial, David Weinstock, of the Dana-Farber Cancer Institute, Boston, and Gianna Zuccotti, of Brigham and Women’s Hospital, Boston, said the spread of Tamiflu-resistant flu “came as a great surprise”.

“Undoubtedly, new surprises await in the perpetual struggle with influenza as one thing is certain — the organism will continue to evolve,” they said, adding that the ability to translate scientific analysis into effective treatment was crucial.

“For now, the best tools to mitigate influenza infection are tried-and-true—vaccination, social distancing, hand washing, and common sense.”

SWAZILAND: AIDS epidemic shows no sign of slowing

Swaziland's AIDS epidemic, already the most severe in the world, appears to have gained further ground with the latest government figures revealing an increase in the percentage of pregnant women infected with HIV.

Of the nearly 2,000 women surveyed who attended antenatal clinics in all four of the country's regions, 42 percent tested HIV positive in 2008, up 3 percent from the last survey conducted in 2006.

SCIENTISTS USE SMALLPOX VACCINE TO FIGHT BIRD FLU

Scientists from Hong Kong and the United States say they have developed an experimental bird flu vaccine by modifying a vaccine once used to treat smallpox.

They told a news conference in Hong Kong Sunday that initial tests on mice showed the new vaccine to be highly effective.

An article published in the current ‘Journal of Immunology’ explains how the scientists from Hong Kong University and the U.S. National Institutes of Health inserted key components of the H5N1 bird flu virus into the smallpox vaccine.

The scientists say the new bird flu vaccine could be produced cheaply and would have a long shelf-life, making it more accessible to poorer nations.

But they say it would not be ready for sale for a few more years, because it has not yet been tested on humans.

The World Health Organization says 408 people have contracted bird flu worldwide since 2003. More than half of the victims died…

Little-known bug becoming epidemic

Bay Area researchers are helping lead the fight against a little-known superbug being described by some hospitals as an epidemic.

The bacteria Clostridium Difficile, or C. Diff, may not be a household name yet, but at hospitals around the country it is becoming a deadly threat.

A recent study found that on any given day more than 7,000 patients are suffering from a C. Diff infection.

An estimated 300 will die from it. "This is an organism that's been around for three decades, but really, in just the last five or six years, has become epidemic," said Dr. Fred Tenover with Cepheid.

Health experts say a rare fungal disease that can be fatal to people has migrated from the Canadian woods to forests in Oregon and Washington.

Cryptococcus gattii has killed 19 people in Canada since 1999 and a total of five people in Oregon and Washington since 2004. It will likely spread down the coast into California.

Stem cell 'cure' boy gets tumor

A boy treated with fetal stem cells for a rare genetic disease has developed benign tumors, raising questions about the therapy's safety.

The boy, now 17, received the stem cells in 2001 at a Moscow hospital, and four years later scans showed brain and spinal tumors.

Israeli doctors removed the abnormal growth from his spine and tests suggest it sprouted from the stem cells.

He had received proteins to help his blood clot from a donor who later died from vCJD and it is thought this is how he became infected.

Experts said until now there was only a theoretical risk that vCJD could be transmitted in this way but it had now become a reality.

Australian Authorities battle three strains of deadly disease

THE number of dengue fever cases in north Queensland has passed 400, as authorities fight three strains of the disease.

It has heightened concern around the outbreak, as people who have had dengue are at risk of serious illnesses, even death, if they contract another strain of the virus.

The number of dengue fever cases confirmed since the December 1, 2008, outbreak now stands at 418.

Three meningitis cases reported at University in Pennsylvania

The University of Pennsylvania has warned that three students have been diagnosed with meningitis.

As a precaution, the school canceled all Greek and school-sponsored events for the weekend, and is offering medical assistance at the college's special health services clinic.

The school believes the common point is that the students had been at a Greek event, or in close contact with someone who was.

One of the three students hospitalized with meningitis was in critical condition, while the other two were stable.

The man was one of thousands of haemophiliacs who received blood plasma transfusions in the years before strict controls were brought in to eliminate the spread of variant Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease (vCJD).

Until now, scientists had maintained that the 4,000 people who may have received plasma from infected donors were at very low risk of developing the fatal brain disease. Warnings were issued to them as a ‘highly precautionary measure’.

But the Health Protection Agency is expected to announce on Tuesday that an elderly man, who died from other causes, contracted vCJD from plasma.

Although vCJD has been transmitted by blood donations in the past, leading to three deaths, no cases of infection had ever been linked to plasma, which is used to clot blood. Scientists had believed the processing and dilution of the product before it is injected into patients significantly reduced the risks.

BSE expert Professor Hugh Pennington, Emeritus Professor of Bacteriology at Aberdeen University said the findings would have ‘significant implications’ for thousands of people who had been given plasma before the dangers were suspected.

‘This looks like pretty grim news for a group of people who have been through fire and water for so long; they have already had increased exposure to hepatitis B and HIV,’ he said.

Warnings were sent to 4,000 haemophiliacs, and patients suffering from other rare blood conditions in 2004 to warn them that they had had received transfusions from 200 batches of blood products at risk of contamination with vCJD. The plasma was collected from nine people who went on to develop the brain-wasting disease.

All 4,000 were advised not to give blood or donate organs and to warn doctors and dentists that they had been put at risk by the use of plasma.

To date, 164 people have died from vCJD in Britain, with most cases linked to eating meat infected with bovine spongiform encephalopathy.

Prof Pennington said details of the way the new link had been detected would be crucial in determining further investigations

Lab tests show possible salmonella at Texas plant

The Peanut Corp. of America plant in Plainview, Texas, had operated unlicensed and uninspected for nearly four years, heightening food safety concerns already swirling around the company.

Peanut Corp. temporarily closed the Texas plant at the request of health officials after tests found "the possible presence of salmonella" in some of its products, the Texas Department of Health said.

Dangerous laser printer particles identified

The identity and origin of tiny, potentially hazardous particles emitted from common laser printers have been revealed by a new study at Queensland University of Technology.

These tiny particles are potentially dangerous to human health because they can penetrate deep into the lungs.

Almost one third of popular laser printers emitted large numbers of ultrafine particles.

Printers with better temperature controls emit fewer particles.

VIETNAM REPORTS SECOND HUMAN CASE OF BIRD FLU

Health officials in Vietnam say a 23-year-old woman has tested positive for a deadly strain of bird flu.

This is the second human case of bird flu diagnosed in Vietnam this year.

Officials in northern Quand Ninh province say the woman became sick after eating chicken. Hospital director Nguyen Quoc Hung says the woman has been under treatment for five days.

Last month, an eight-year old girl from northern Thanh Hoa province also tested positive for the H5N1 virus.

On Saturday, animal health authorities confirmed bird flu outbreaks in poultry in three provinces in Vietnam.

HONG KONG CONFIRMS NEW BIRD FLU OUTBREAK

Officials in Hong Kong say several birds there have tested positive for the deadly strain of bird flu.

Officials say two dead ducks and one dead goose found on a beach on Lantau island in the past week have tested positive for the H5N1 strain of the disease.

More than a dozen other birds were also found dead in the area in recent days. Officials say they are still testing those birds.

Authorities say they are investigating whether the birds came from mainland China, where five people have died of bird flu this year.

In December, chickens at a Hong Kong farm were found to be infected with the disease, prompting authorities to slaughter tens of thousands of birds.

That outbreak of bird flu was the first in Hong Kong in five years.

The avian virus normally passes from bird to bird and occasionally to humans, but experts fear it could begin spreading from one human to another and start a pandemic that could kill millions

On 23 January 2009, the Government of the Philippines announced that a person thought to have come in contact with sick pigs had tested positive for Ebola Reston Virus (ERV) antibodies (IgG).

On 30 January 2009 the Gov. announced that a further four individuals had been found positive for ERV antibodies-From these observations and previous studies of ERV, the virus has shown it can be transmitted to humans, without resulting in illness.

However, the evidence available relates only to healthy adults and it would be premature to conclude the health effects of the virus on all population groups.

Rabies Plague kills over 50 Angolan children in 3 months

Rabies has killed over 50 children in Angola's capital Luanda in the past three months, raising alarm in a city with thousands of stray dogs whose infected bite can transmit the virus to humans, a health official said.

"This is something I have never seen in Angola before. The virus is extremely serious because it is like a death sentence to humans," said hospital director Luis Bernardino.

Rabies is an acute viral infection that is nearly always fatal when left untreated.

It is usually transmitted through saliva in the bite of an infected animal, often a dog.

Children are usually the biggest victims of rabies because they cannot protect themselves from dogs.

Researchers find traces of mercury in high-fructose corn syrup

For the first time, researchers say they have detected traces of the silvery metal in samples of high-fructose corn syrup.

EBOLA MAY HAVE PASSED FROM A PIG TO A HUMAN

In the first known case of what may be transmission of the Ebola virus from a pig to a human, a pig handler in the Philippines has tested positive for a strain of the virus, world health officials and the Philippine government announced Friday.

But the strain — Ebola Reston — is not known to be dangerous to humans, and the worker, who was infected at least six months ago, is healthy, officials said.

The development is worrying because pigs are mixing vessels in which other viruses from humans and animals exchange genetic material, possibly creating strains that are more lethal or more infectious.

But Dr. Juan Lubroth, chief of animal health at the United Nations Food and Agricultural Organization, said there was ‘more need to investigate than to worry’ and still many unanswered questions.

Ebola Reston, normally a monkey virus, was first found in pigs last year in the Philippines. Health authorities closed two farms and took blood samples from 6,000 pigs and 50 workers on the farms and in slaughterhouses. Only four pigs and the one worker tested positive, the Philippine health secretary, Francisco Duque, said at a news conference in Manila.

Dr. Lubroth said the first pigs tested were very sick, but turned out to have more than one infection, including a virulent reproductive and respiratory syndrome. The Ebola Reston may not have been what sickened them.

‘But farmers, of course, would prefer to have pigs without Ebola,’ he said. ‘So we want to do more testing to see what they can do to protect them.’

Broader sampling will determine, among other things, whether the disease is more common in pigs and humans than was known, whether it causes fever and how long its incubation period is.

Ebola Reston was first found in monkeys from the Philippines that died after arriving at a laboratory in Reston, Virginia, in 1989. Antibodies to it were found in workers in several laboratories, but it is not known to have caused more than a mild flu in any human.

By contrast, the Zaire, Sudan and Bundibugyo strains of Ebola, all found in African apes, cause fatal hemorrhagic fever in humans…

Transfusion-acquired parasite infection up in U.S.

Since the end of 2005, the US Food and Drug Administration has received 9 reports of deaths due to a parasitic infection called babesiosis transmitted by blood transfusions, following nearly a decade in which no cases were reported. 

The number of reports of potential transfusion-transmitted Babesia infection and post-donation babesiosis rose from zero in 1999 to 25 in 2007.

STDs still on the rise, report says

In spite of prevention efforts, new cases of some of the most common sexually transmitted diseases are going up, according to a new report from the Centers for Disease Control andPrevention.

Much of the burden of STDs falls on adolescents and people in their early 20s, the CDC says.

The report, "Sexually Transmitted Disease Surveillance 2007," also said that women and minorities in particular are more likely to have sexually transmitted diseases, or STDs.

That fact isn't surprising, experts say, as studies on STDs in the past have also shown that women and minorities bear the greatest burden of STDs.

The age of those affected hasn't changed much either -- nearly 19 million new sexually transmitted infections occur each year, and almost half of those affect 15- to 24-year-olds.

Officials Still Seek Source of Major Salmonella Outbreak

The source of a salmonella outbreak that has sickened almost 400 Americans in 42 states remains unknown, U.S. health officials said Friday, adding that more cases are expected.

The strain of salmonella has been identified as Salmonella Typhimurium, the most common of the more than 2,500 types of salmonella bacteria in the United States. It's often found in uncooked eggs and meats, said officials with the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), who have been investigating the outbreak for several weeks.

"Cases are continuing to occur, and it is an ongoing investigation," said Dr. Rajal Mody, a CDC Epidemic Intelligence Service officer. "The first people began getting ill in September, but it usually takes several weeks before enough cases have been reported to start noticing a possible outbreak."

While the cause isn't known, Mody said he suspects a food item, possibly produce or a prepared packaged food.

"When you look at the distribution of cases, it does suggest that it could be a mass-distributed food," he said. "This outbreak is on the larger side, but there have been larger outbreaks."

Contagious equine disease hits Kansas

At least six mares in south-central Kansas are part of a growing number of horses in 28 states exposed to a contagious equine disease.

The Kansas Livestock Commission said it contacted owners of the maresthis week.

Commissioner George Teagarden said his office is still investigating whether other animals could be infected with the disease, contagious equine metritis.

The U.S. Department of Agriculture said 12 stallions and 83 mares in 28 states have contracted the condition since it first emerged in December.

Sick firefighters blame chemical in pants

A firefighter in Boca Raton, Fla., alleges he and others in his department were slowly poisoned by the fire-resistant material in their pants.

Of 36 Boca Raton firefighters tested for the chemical antimony, 30 were found to have elevated levels of the heavy metal.

While the makers of the pants say there is no hard evidence the pants were to blame, the city has asked the U.S. Centers for Disease Control to investigate.

Avian Flu Becoming More Resistant To Antiviral Drugs

A new University of Colorado at Boulder study shows the resistance of the avian flu virus to a major class of antiviral drugs is increasing, with researchers documenting the trend in more than 30 % of the samples tested. 

The avian flu, a Influenza A subtype dubbed H5N1, is evolving a resistance to a group of antiviral drugs known as adamantanes, one of two classes of antiviral drugs used to prevent and treat flu symptoms.

WHO reaffirms fears of Ebola transmission through dead monkeys

The representative of the World Health Organization in Angola was quoted as saying that he feared that the improper handling of dead monkeys found in the forest might be the cause of the outbreak of the Ebola pandemic in the Democratic Republic of Congo.

He said although the source of the Ebola virus is so far unknown, it is feared that hunters and women who visit the forest might have been in contact with infected monkeys.

The authorities in Angola say they have closed part of the border with the Democratic Republic of Congo to prevent the spread of the deadly Ebola virus.

It is believed to have infected at least 40 people, of which more than 10 have died.

NEW BIRD FLU CASES REVIVE FEARS OF HUMAN PANDEMIC

Just when you thought you could scratch bird flu off your list of things to worry about in 2009, the deadly H5N1 virus has resurfaced in poultry in Hong Kong for the first time in six years, reinforcing warnings that the threat of a human pandemic isn't over.

India, Bangladesh, Vietnam and mainland China also experienced new outbreaks in December. During the same period, four new human cases -- in Egypt, Cambodia and Indonesia -- were reported to the World Health Organization. A 16-year-old girl in Egypt and a 2-year-old girl in Indonesia have died.

The new cases come after a two-year decline in the number of confirmed human deaths from H5N1 bird flu and as fewer countries are reporting outbreaks among poultry. A United Nations report released in October credits improved surveillance and the rapid culling of potentially infected poultry for helping to contain and even prevent outbreaks in many countries.

Yet H5N1 has continued to ‘at the very least smolder, and many times flare up’ since the chain of outbreaks began in 2003, said Michael T. Osterholm, director of the Center for Infectious Disease Research and Policy at the University of Minnesota in Minneapolis.

The year-end uptick is a reminder of how quickly the situation can turn as long as the H5N1 virus is still out there, Osterholm and other scientists said. ‘What alarms me is that we have developed a sense of pandemic-preparedness fatigue,’ he said.

H5N1 already has been a disaster for poultry farmers in Asia. Public health officials estimate that as many as half a billion fowl have been killed by the virus or culled to contain its spread, causing enormous economic strain and food shortages. But the bigger fear has always been that H5N1 would give rise to a human pandemic like the so-called Spanish flu of 1918, which killed an estimated 50 million people worldwide.

It was in Hong Kong in 1997 that the H5N1 virus was first observed to jump from chickens to humans, infecting 18 people and killing six of them, raising fears of a worldwide catastrophe. Hong Kong ordered its entire poultry population, estimated at 1.6 million birds, destroyed within three days

Britain braces for large rise in flu outbreaks

Britain is bracing for a large rise in flu outbreaks during the New Year as a strain which killed six children in Australia in 2007 spreads.

European health experts say the current flu season - already on course to be the worst in eight years - will become more severe as the disease traditionally peaks between January and March.

A report by the European Influenza Surveillance Scheme says the UK, Bulgaria, Ireland and Spain are experiencing "medium intensity" flu activity, while Portugal has high intensity levels.

And the illness is increasing in 11 more countries.

Cholera Kills 1,518 in Zimbabwe's Biggest Outbreak, WHO Says

The fatality rate from the 26,497 cases reported by Dec. 25 was 5.7 percent, higher than the 1 percent that is normal in large outbreaks, the Geneva-based organization said in a statement on its Web site.

Cholera has also been reported in neighboring South Africa and Botswana. In South Africa, there have been 12 deaths from 1,279 cases reported.

EPA hides hazardous substances

The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency routinely allows companies to keep new information about their chemicals secret, including compounds that have been shown to cause cancer and respiratory problems.

A newspaper examined more than 2,000 filings in the EPA's registry of dangerous chemicals for the past three years. In more than half the cases, the EPA agreed to keep the chemical name a secret.

Poisoned medicine kills dozens of children

LAGOS, Nigeria - Nneka and Chimezie Ononaku unwittingly poisoned their own four-month-old son.

A television image of Nneka and Chimezie Ononaku's four-month-old son, who died after taking "My Pikin."

Giving him what they thought was a baby teething medicine, they were in fact dosing him with anti-freeze.

The bottle had been contaminated with a toxic chemical called diethylene glycol.

More than 30 Nigerian children are thought to have died recently after taking the medicine.

Sushi to Blame for Mercury Toxicity

Actor Jeremy Piven has stepped down from his Broadway role in the David Mamet play Speed-the-Plow following a diagnosis of "high mercury count", now seriously ill.

His doctor described him as having "shocking" levels of mercury in his system, which was likely caused by eating "excessive" amounts of sushi.

Piven's mercury levels were not only "shockingly elevated," but almost six times the upper tolerable limit and the highest the doctor had ever seen in his practice.

Ebola virus found in Philippine pigs

Pigs in three Philippine hog farms have been found infected with the Ebola Reston virus, a strain not harmful to humans, officials say.

The affected farms in three northern Philippine provinces have been quarantined and farm and slaughterhouse workers who might have been exposed all tested negative for Ebola Reston, Agriculture Secretary Arthur Yap said in a statement on Thursday.

As a precaution, he said all pork exports have been suspended until further notice.

"We advise the public that it is safe to eat pork provided that the pork was properly handled and thoroughly cooked," Health Secretary Francisco Duque said in a statement.

Irish dioxin scare spreads to beef

Ireland put 34 cattle farms under restrictions amid concerns that dangerous chemicals could have contaminated beef in addition to pork, the Irish government is now saying.

Officials have estimated that 100,000 pigs may have to be slaughtered. The Food Safety Authority advised consumers not to consume Irish pork and bacon products for the time being.

Ireland said that feed tainted with toxic dioxins which led Ireland to recall all pork products came from one farm and the source had been contained.

Valproate Use During Pregnancy Linked to Autism

Mothers who take the epilepsy drug valproate (sold under the brand names Depacon and Depakene) during pregnancy may face an increased risk of having a child who will develop autism, according to a study by British researchers.

Rare infection in New Mexico causes Death

One child in New Mexico has died from a rare infection sometimes associated with powdered infant formula. 

According to a report, a second child in the state is hospitalized with an infection from a different strain of the same bacteria, called Enterobacter sakazakii. 

The Department of Health said it is working with the CDC, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration and New Mexico Environment Department to try to determine what caused the babies to develop the infection.

Research shows calorie cut makes it harder to fight flu

Dieters or those who consume fewer calories during flu season could have a harder time fighting off the flu virus, according to research at Michigan State University.

Mice with a calorie-restricted diet were more likely to die during the first few days of infection than mice with a normal diet.

"Our research shows that having a body ready to fight a virus will lead to a faster recovery and less-severe effects than if it is calorically restricted," one researcher said.

A new species of the deadly Ebola virus has been identified by American and Ugandan scientists.

The new virus, called Bundibugyo ebolavirus, caused an outbreak in western Uganda in 2007.

It is genetically distinct from all other known Ebola virus species, differing by more than 30% at the genetic level.

Tick-borne disease passed person-to-person in China

A tick-borne infectious disease spreading in the United States and Europe has been identified for the first time in China, where it apparently passed from person to person, Chinese researchers said.

The disease -- human granulocytic anaplasmosis (HGA) -- is marked by symptoms like fever, severe headache, muscle aches, chills and shaking.

It can lead to severe disease and opportunistic infections. Caused by the anaplasma phagocytophiluman bacteria, it is carried by ticks to humans.

Insect foggers linked to illnesses

Health officials in Washington State say dozens of illnesses and injuries due to exposure to bug bombs have been reported since 2005.

Many people aren't aware the products can be a health risk.

The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention recently reported on 466 fogger exposures from 8 states.

The report said 20% of the people had moderate to severe symptoms that required medical attention.

More than 20 people were hospitalized for longer than one day.

How Washington hospitals unleashed a MRSA epidemic

Over the past decade, the number of Washington hospital patients infected MRSA has skyrocketed from 141 a year to 4,723.

These numbers don't appear in public documents.

Washington regulators don't track the germ or its victims, and Washington hospitals do not have to reveal infection rates.

In an investigation, state files revealed 672 previously undisclosed deaths attributable to the infection.

Children should not use Lamisil

Lamisil, a medication used to treat nail fungus, should be monitored for side effects in children, according to a report by FDA staff.

Children have experienced a variety of side effects, including skin reactions, neurological problems, and psychiatric events.

Many people think of tuberculosis as being a disease

from the past. The truth is far from it: Tuberculosis is mutating into dangerous new strains for which there is no known cure.

One of the most frightening strains is XDR-TB, which stands for extensively drug-resistant TB.

Smaller Mosquitoes More Dangerous

Scientists measured mosquitoes' wings, then fed them blood that packed the dengue virus.  

The smaller bugs were more likely to become infected and therefore more likely to transmit disease.   

The tests were done on both Asian tiger mosquitoes and yellow fever mosquitoes. 

Both pests are found in the United States and throughout the world and are the 2 main transmitters of dengue virus. The size factor held up for both.

New E. coli Outbreak in Denver Colorado

8 Denver children between four and 12 years of age have all tested positive for the same Escherichia coli O157:H7 bacteria.  

Officials are still unclear as to the connection and source of the outbreak.  

The children live or have visited the Evergreen area of Denver, but they do not attend the same school.  

2 children remain hospitalized.

Polio spreads to new countries and increases where it's endemic

Polio infections are increasing and spreading to new countries, according to case counts recently released by the World Health Organization. 

Since April, outbreaks have been found in 10 countries beyond the four in which polio is considered endemic -- Afghanistan, India, Nigeria and Pakistan. 

And in those four countries, the number of cases is more than double the number found by this time in 2007.

Tourists traveling by plane and the growth of cities are combining to help new and old infections spread around the world, experts say.

Viruses such as Chikungunya and dengue fever are finding new homes or returning to places where they were eradicated.

Beaches in U.S. Host Drug-Resistant Bacteria, Researchers Find

A drug-resistant germ linked to surgical wound and urinary tract infections was found on 5 U.S. West Coast beaches, according to scientists who said the bacteria isn't usually seen outside of hospitals.

Though enterococci hasn't reached the level of MRSA, it's growing as a public-health threat and the findings suggest the germs may have moved out of hospitals and into the general population.

Unknown Mystery disease spreads through India Villages

The unknown mystery disease that has affected three villages in Santgachia has now spread to adjoining villages in Budge Budge and Bishnupur, South 24-Parganas.

UGANDA: Hepatitis E Outbreak spreads

Hepatitis E is on the increase in Uganda's northern district of Pader, where it has claimed scores of lives and infected thousands in the past year, officials said.

Since May, there have been 55 new infections and seven deaths in Pader, according to Angelo Luganya, a health official in Pader.

"More cases are being received in health units in villages and there is need for urgent attention to check on the disease that is on the rise," he told IRIN.

GUINEA-BISSAU: Raging Cholera epidemic out of control

The cholera epidemic is still out of control across Guinea-Bissau, with the number of cases doubling in the past three weeks, bringing the total number of people stricken to 10,476 as of 9 October.

There have been 312 new infections in the past two days, according to the UN Children's Fund (UNICEF), and 181 people have died from the disease.

"The epidemic is not under control. I don't want to be alarmist, but we haven't reached the peak and there are still new cases every day," Daniel Remartinez, emergency coordinator for Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF) Spain, told IRIN from the capital Bissau.

Highly Contagious Virus sickens 200 U.S. students

A highly contagious gastrointestinal virus has sickened another 70 students at the University of Southern California (USC), bringing the total number of sick students to 200, university officials said on Monday.

Students who are not feeling well should avoid socializing and take precautions to reduce the chance of infecting other students, USC officials said.

To avoid contracting the virus, staff and students were asked to frequently wash their hands, use hand sanitizer gels or wipes, and refrain from sharing work stations, food and beverages.

Symptoms of the virus include vomiting, diarrhea and stomach-cramping, and last about one to two days and can be managed with rest and fluids, USC officials said.

Mystery Disease on the move in S.Africa:

South African health officials said on Monday they were closely monitoring an unknown disease similar to hemorrhagic fever that has killed three people, but called on the public not to panic.

Melinda Pelser, spokeswoman at Johannesburg's Morningside Clinic, which treated the three patients, said the disease causes external and internal bleeding and was spread through bodily fluids.

But there were no signs it was airborne.

Jump seen in staph-linked flu deaths in kids

More children have died from flu because they also had staph infections, according to a new government report that urges parents to have their kids get the flu shot.

The number of deaths wasn't high- 73 during the 2006-07 flu season, but there was more than a fivefold increase in hard-to-treat complications.

And preliminary figures indicate deaths rose again during this past winter's flu season.

A girl who spontaneously bleeds from her pores is baffling doctors.

Twinkle Dwivedi, 13, has a strange disorder which means she loses blood through her skin without being cut or scratched.

She has even undergone transfusions after pints of it seeped through her eyes, nose, hairline, neck and the soles of her feet.

Sometimes her condition is so bad she wakes up with her entire body covered in dried blood.

Last year, Twinkle was a normal 12-year-old who enjoyed school, painting and playing with her friends - but then she suddenly started bleeding between five and 20 times a day.

CANADA: Listeriosis death toll rises to 19

The number of deaths linked to the Maple Leaf Foods listeriosis outbreak has reached 19, it was announced on Friday (26 September).

The Public Health Agency of Canada said on its website that the additional death was reported in Quebec, the first confirmed death since 19 September.

To date, 14 deaths have been confirmed in Ontario, with two in British Columbia and one each in New Brunswick and Alberta. Five more deaths are currently under investigation by the health agency.

Canada Health officials investigate salmonella outbreak

Canadian health officials are investigating a potential North American outbreak of a rare strain of salmonella called Salmonella Poona.

The Public Health Agency says it is working closely with local and U.S. health authorities to determine the origin of the food-borne illness that has sickened 48 people in the United States.

In Canada there have been six cases in Manitoba, Quebec and Nova Scotia with the same "genetic fingerprint" as the strain in the U.S. and 14 other suspected cases in Ontario.

MRSA SUPER BUG : a killer moves from the hospital to the street

Hospital staff in Oregon put on protective gowns, gloves and masks upon entering the room of a patient who has tested positive for MRSA Super Bug.

MRSA is a superbug that has wreaked such havoc in British hospitals that the government ordered a £50 million (Dh341m) “deep clean” of the hospitals to reduce the number of MRSA infections acquired by patients.

The move followed the deaths of thousands of people from infections picked up while in hospital, often after coming in with relatively minor ailments.

MRSA or methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus is a form of bacterium that, as its name suggests, is resistant to a group of antibiotics, including penicillin.

While cases of MRSA infection date to the 1960s and were once largely confined to hospitals, the bacteria is increasingly appearing in gymnasiums, dormitories and even on public transportation systems.

Spain confirms fourth human case of mad cow disease

The Spanish government tonight confirmed the country's fourth case of the human variant of mad cow disease, a woman who died in the northwestern region of Castilla and Leon last month.

Spanish news reports said the 64-year-old woman was the mother of a 41-year-old man who also died of the brain-wasting disease earlier this year.

The health ministry said laboratory tests confirmed that the woman had Creutzfeldt-Jakob Disease (CJD), the human variant of bovine spongiform encephalopathy (BSE) or mad cow disease.

More Deaths from Legionnaires' disease in NJ hospital

New Jersey health officials say two men have died after contracting Legionnaires' disease in a hospital.

Health Department spokeswoman Marilyn Riley said Wednesday that one died Sept. 12 and the other Monday at St. Peter's University Hospital in the city of New Brunswick.

Four other people at the hospital were found to have Legionnaires' over the past two weeks. All six were admitted with other serious illnesses.

The hospital is treating its water supply with chlorine to kill the bacteria and reviewing records to determine whether other patients might have contracted the disease.

Legionnaires' disease is a type of pneumonia that can be spread through plumbing and air conditioning systems.

Flesh-eating Buruli disease spreads across West Africa

A tropical flesh-eating disease, Buruli ulcer, is spreading across West Africa and has infected at least 40,000 people leaving them with bloody infected wounds and swollen skin ulcers, which at their worst, require surgery or amputation, according to the World Health Organization (WHO).

The disease has been reported in 30 countries around the world, mostly in poor, rural, tropical communities that live near water. In West Africa, according to WHO 2006 statistics, Ivory Coast has reported 24,000 cases, Ghana reported 11,000, and Benin has 7,000 confirmed cases.

Despite a 10-year global WHO-backed Buruli ulcer research initiative, researchers still do not know how the disease is spread, and whether water-born insects are to blame, as suggested by early research.

Even though the same bacteria family causes both Buruli ulcers and tuberculosis, Buruli ulcer disease receives far less international attention and remains one of the world's most overlooked diseases, according to WHO.

Malaria claims a million lives

MALARIA killed nearly one million people worldwide in 2006 with children under five and African countries bearing the brunt, according to the World Health Organisation.

"There were an estimated 247 million malaria cases among 3.3 billion people at risk in 2006, causing nearly a million deaths, mostly of children under five years," the WHO said in its Annual Malaria Report.

Malaria was found to be endemic in 109 countries this year with nearly half (45) being in Africa, it noted.

Togo: Recent bird flu outbreak is deadly H5N1

Tests performed after the first ever outbreak of bird flu in the West African nation of Togo have confirmed the presence of the virulent H5N1 strain of the virus.

The virus was detected at a poultry farm housing more than 4,500 birds in the village of Agbata outside the capital, Lome, according to the government.

Microwave Popcorn Caused Lung Disease, Lawsuit Claims

Microwave popcorn caused a Washington state man to develop a potentially fatal ailment, a new lawsuit claims.

The disease, bronchiolitis obliterans - also known as Popcorn Workers Lung - has been linked to diacetyl, a chemical used to give microwave popcorn and other snack foods a buttery flavor.

In 2003 and 2004, the National Institute on Occupational Safety and Health found an association between the toxic substance and the development of Popcorn Workers Lung among hundreds of workers at 6 Midwestern popcorn factories.

Premature children 4 times more likely to have behavioral disorders

Children born prematurely are 4 times more likely to have emotional problems or behavioral disorders.

A team led by the University's Department of Psychology and Warwick Medical School examined the behavior of 200 six year old children who had been born below 26 weeks gestation, known as 'extremely pre-term'.

The researchers found 30.6% of pre-term children were hyperactive, compared to 8.8% in the full-term group, and 33.3% of pre-term children displayed attention problems, compared to 6.8%.

Girl, 6, becomes seventh child victim of mystery Hong Kong disease

A 6-year-old schoolgirl has become the seventh child victim of a mystery illness in Hong Kong, health officials confirmed Friday.

The girl died one day after being treated and discharged for fever and vomiting at a hospital emergency unit, the city's Department of Health said.

Her death is the seventh unexplained child death in the past five months and the third in less than a month, a department spokesman confirmed.

The deaths have caused unease among parents across the city of 6.9 million and provided an uncomfortable reminder of the 2003 SARS outbreak, which killed 299 and infected 1,799 in Hong Kong.

In the weeks before her death, the latest victim had visited Shenzhen and Guangzhou in southern China, from where the SARS virus spread to Hong Kong in 2003.

However, no traces of the SARS virus have been found in any of the recent cases, which are being logged under a new paediatric illness surveillance programme set up this year.

The Department of Health pointed out that in an average year, 15 to 20 children aged 9 or younger died from often-undiagnosed infectious diseases.

The previous two children to die were an 11-month-old baby, who fell ill on August 29, and a 3-year-old, who fell ill 21 days earlier.

Oklahoma: 1 dead, 116 ill in E. coli outbreak

Oklahoma health officials said Friday they are searching for the source of a rare form of E. coli that has killed one person and sickened 116 others in the northeastern part of the state.

The subtype of bacteria -- called E. coli 0111 -- is "not normally found in this form of outbreak," said Leslea Bennett-Webb, director of communication for the Oklahoma State Department of Health.

More than 50 people have been hospitalized and nine people -- six of them children -- have been placed on dialysis, she said.

She said the federal Centers for Disease Control and Prevention in Atlanta, Georgia, helped state officials determine the subtype, but said the cause of the outbreak remains unknown.

"The focus has been narrowed to the Country Cottage Restaurant located in Locust Grove," she said, noting that most of the people who became ill ate there between August 15 and August 23.

Tests carried out on water from a well on restaurant property indicate the presence of bacteria, but "we have not been able to confirm what kind of bacteria," said Skylar McElhaney, a spokeswoman for the Oklahoma Department of Environmental Quality.

The Oklahoma Department of Health will analyze them and compare them with samples taken from victims, she said. "We can't say for sure that it is tied to the water in any way, but we also cannot rule it out," she said.

Pesticide Exposures Tied to Diabetes Risk

Workers who use chemical pesticides on more than 100 days during their lifetimes are at greater risk for diabetes, according to a National Institutes of Health study.

Researchers found the association between pesticides and diabetes incidence ranged from a 20 % to a 200% increase in risk.

The strongest relationship was found for a chemical called triclilorfon, with an 85% increase in diabetes risk for frequent and infrequent users and a nearly 250% increase in risk for those who used the chemical more than 10 times.

Hospital exposes 1075 people to tuberculosis

Kaiser Permanente is contacting 960 mothers whose babies may have been exposed to a health care worker in San Francisco who has an active case of tuberculosis.

The worker was assigned to the postpartum unit in the maternity ward of Kaiser's San Francisco Medical Center to care for mothers and infants.

Kaiser officials say the infection risk for patients is very low, but testing will be provided along with treatment if necessary.

Kaiser also is notifying 115 employees who may have been exposed.

Bubonic plague in National Park

Wyoming Department of Health officials said they are investigating a case of bubonic plague in an out-of-state resident who recently visited Teton County and Yellowstone National Park.

The individual traveled to multiple sites in the area with a group of Boy Scouts.

The man had been working on a service project, camping, sightseeing and participating in sports.

Health authorities say park visitors need to take precautions, as the plague does exist in Wyoming.

Cholera Outbreak spreads in Vietnam

Vietnam has so far this year detected 4,533 cases of acute diarrhea infections, of whom 722 have been tested positive to cholera virus, local newspaper Youth on Monday quoted statistics from the country's Health Ministry as reporting.

Since the beginning of this month, up to 390 people, mainly in northern provinces, have suffered from acute diarrhea infections. Most of them used unhygienic foodstuffs and used substandard toilets.

The ministry said it is difficult to completely contain cholera because cholera virus strain, which has stricken Vietnam since late last year, has mutated so that it can live longer in environment.

Mystery sickness killed 1, sickened others at restaurant

26-year-old Chad Ingle was one of dozens who fell ill with some type of food borne illness in Oklahoma.

Although Ingle was discharged from Tulsa's St. Francis Hospital, he returned to the hospital the following morning when his condition worsened; he died soon after.

Several others who ate at the same Locust Grove restaurant as Ingle also became ill, yet health officials say they conducted a thorough inspection of the facility and found nothing that would sicken so many.

Despite this, it is suspected that all those who were sickened, were contaminated with the E. coli bacterium after eating at the restaurant.

Scientists have expressed serious concern that infections from antibiotic resistant E. coli bacteria are spreading into the greater population and several countries also now report cases of antibiotic-resistant E.

Scotland's rainfall caused major sewage contamination

Dangerous amounts of faecal bacteria have contaminated more than a quarter of Scotland's beaches this summer because of unprecedented heavy rainfall.

Some usually pristine beaches have seen the amount of pollutants rocket to 6 times the safe limit as sewage pipes overflowed into the sea.

Swimmers who go into the highly contaminated water risk contracting salmonella or picking up streptococcus bacteria, which can cause throat and stomach infections.

The extraordinary pollution levels have been blamed on sewage pipes overflowing with rain water, as well as rain falling on agricultural fields picking up bacteria from manure and washing it into the sea.

Rare disease hits Afghanistan from contaminated wheat

As many as 10 people have died in western Afghanistan from a rare liver disease believed to be caused by contaminated wheat.

At least 161 people were also hospitalized with Gulran disease although estimates were as high as 200 affected in Herat province, on the Iranian border, said the representative of the U.N. World Health Organization.

A toxic weed called charmak, which grows in the area, contains alkalines [alkaloids] that affect the liver causing Gulran disease, which is named after the affected district in Herat.

The disease is not new but rare, and has killed as many as 10 people in recent weeks.

With a reported high incidence of malaria cases due to increased construction activities this year, cases of resistance to anti-malarial drugs have also gone up considerably.

To make things worse, the resistance is recorded more in case of the P falciparum strain that accounts for more than 60% of the mortality.

Drug-resistance means that the common drug regimen used to treat malaria fails to kill the parasite, resulting in a relapse of the ailment.

Singapore hit with hand, foot and mouth virus outbreak

Singapore is on the verge of a hand, foot and mouth disease outbreak, the Straits Times reported on Saturday, quoting government health officials.

The paper said 553 people were afflicted with the virus last week, up from 415 the week before. Last week's figure was just 12 fewer than the Health Ministry's official "epidemic level."

Hand, foot and mouth disease, which is treatable, usually affects children and causes fever and rashes on the hands, feet and buttocks

Canada: 4th person dies in listeriosis infections

A fourth person was reported dead Friday of listeriosis as Canadian officials continued to investigate whether infections from the bacteria might be linked to tainted meat products.

The Canadian Food Inspection Agency said investigators could know as early as Saturday whether there's a link between the infections and the recall of some 23 varieties of ready-to-eat Maple Leaf Foods meat products manufactured in Toronto.

Three of the deaths were in Ontario, the fourth was in British Columbia.

They are among 17 confirmed cases of listeriosis across Canada, and health officials warned that more cases were likely, given that listeriosis has an average incubation period of three weeks.

Listeriosis is a kind of food poisoning that can be dangerous to the elderly, newborns, pregnant women and people with chronic medical conditions. Symptoms include fever, headache, stiffness, nausea, abdominal pain and diarrhea

Fourth child succumbs to mystery virus in Hong Kong

A fourth child has fallen ill with a mystery virus that is suspected to have killed two children and left one in serious condition, health officials said.

The latest patient, a 3-year-old boy, was admitted to hospital with fever and vomiting. His conditioned worsened after convulsions and he fell into a coma, the Center for Health Protection said.

Travelers to Malaysia told to cover up

Travelers heading to Malaysia were advised to cover up and generously apply insect repellent as the mosquito-borne chikungunya virus spreads in neighboring Singapore. The same advice was given to travelers to India and Indonesia.

There is no vaccine against the disease, which is similar to dengue fever. Its symptoms include joint pain, fever and rashes.

Malaysia has reported a record 136 chikungunya patients this year.

Cattle infected wit TB in Ireland

TB infected carcasses of Irish cattle that should have been declared unfit for human consumption may have entered the food chain, according to a scathing EU report on Ireland's efforts to eradicate bovine tuberculosis.

Inspectors from the EU Food and Veterinary Office (FVO) have identified major deficiencies in the slaughter of TB reactor animals, including a risk of carcasses which are fit for human consumption being contaminated with the TB micro-bacterium.
