Archived from NEWS+VIEWS page June 24, 2008 -------- USA authorities begin hunting for dead birds infected with West Nile virus Authorities of Suffolk County have activated a hotline for local residents to report occurrences of dead birds that may be infected with West Nile virus. Birds infected with that virus can often be found at pools or any other open source of water due to their thirst which they suffer from because of the viral infection. Specialists of the Suffolk County Department for Health Services will follow such reports to pick up crows, blue jays, hawks, falcons, owls, exotic or unusual bird species. West Nile virus (or WNV) is a virus of the family Flaviviridae; part of the Japanese encephalitis (JE) antigenic complex of viruses, it is found in both tropical and temperate regions. It mainly infects birds, but is known to infect humans, horses, dogs, cats, bats, chipmunks, skunks, squirrels, and domestic rabbits. The main route of human infection is through the bite of an infected mosquito. ================== PAKISTAN REPORTS NEW BIRD FLU OUTBREAK Pakistani authorities have reported a new outbreak of bird flu at a poultry farm in the country's northwest. The authorities said Sunday tests conducted at laboratories in Islamabad confirmed the presence of the deadly H5N1 strain of avian flu at a farm in Swabi district of the North West Frontier Province. They say the owner of the farm informed them that some 4,000 birds had died recently and that the remaining 2,000 were culled. Local health authorities are monitoring nearby farms and the farm workers are being tested. Archived from NEWS+VIEWS page June 20, 2008 -------- Salmonella cases from tomatoes jump to 383 Federal health officials have learned of 106 more cases of salmonella linked to tainted tomatoes, putting the outbreak's toll at 383 on Wednesday and counting. "We do not think the outbreak is over," said Dr. Robert Tauxe of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Most of this newest influx of cases were people who got sick weeks ago but hadn't been counted yet. Some states began doing a better job of checking for salmonella as the outbreak has dragged on, while part of the surge comes from test results that had been backlogged in jammed laboratories. Archived from NEWS+VIEWS page June 16, 2008 -------- West Nile virus fight to be ramped up this summer Crews spray insecticide to kill West Nile-carrying mosquitoes. The Bronx is in the thick of West Nile breeding season. But take heart. City health officials say they've gotten a grip on the situation. At the outset of the 10th mosquito season since the deadly virus first struck New York, the Health and Mental Hygiene Department is again taking measures to keep residents from being infected. From citywide trapping and testing of mosquitoes to applying anti-breeding larvicides on standing bodies of water, the department has been hard at work. "We're focusing very hard on prevention," said Dr. Edgar Butts, assistant commissioner of the department's Bureau of Veterinary and Pest Control Services. "We use all of the tools available to prevent West Nile from becoming present." West Nile first appeared in the Western Hemisphere here in New York in the summer of 1999, when 45 people were infected, four fatally. West Nile still remains a threat. Since 1999, 23 of the 159 cases in the city ended in death. "We've been very successful recently," Butts said. Part of the department's success comes from adapting its policies to maximize efficiency. Instead of using solicited reports of dead birds as it had for the last several years, it recently determined that trapping live mosquitoes was more effective in detecting West Nile, so the department will no longer take the bird reports. The mosquito traps have been placed in more than 70 locations citywide, 10 of them in the Bronx. Butts said that West Nile has yet to be detected anywhere in the city this year, but the first infected mosquitoes typically show up in late June or July. The department plans to aggressively remove standing water throughout the city. For permanent areas of standing water, such as in sewer systems and catch basins, the water will be treated with larvicides that are not toxic to humans. "We want to have as few adult mosquitoes as possible," Butts said. All catch basins in the Bronx and throughout the city will be treated with larvicide three times between June and August. In nonresidential areas inaccessible for ground application, the larvicide will be applied by aerial spraying. In the Bronx, the large marshy areas of Pelham Bay Park will be treated six times by helicopter between June 15 and Sept. 15. If the department determines that a significant risk of West Nile exists to humans, at-risk areas will be treated with low levels of the "adulticide" Sumithrin, a pesticide that kills adult mosquitoes, with human residents given at least 24 hours' notice. According to a 2001 study, the pesticide does not pose a significant risk to humans, especially when compared with the risk of not dealing with the virus-carrying mosquitoes. "We apply a very, very small amount of adulticide, and we ask people to go indoors, and we do community outreach to let people know when we're going to treat," Butts said. "We're very careful." Last year, the department conducted four sprays in the Bronx between Aug. 15 and Oct. 1. Butts stressed that people should also do what they can to limit vulnerability to the virus, with the elderly particularly vigilant, as people over 65 are the most susceptible to it. However, victims' ages have ranged from 1 to 93, so all residents should take precautions to clear their property of standing water, such as in unused tires and cans. The department recommends residents keep rain gutters clean and unclogged, clean and chlorinate swimming pools and make sure doors and windows have tightly-fitting screens. "People cannot become complacent with West Nile," Butts said. "It's still there." The Last Days Signs - The End Times - Are Upon The Earth! ===================== More West Nile Virus cases found in California Health officials have collected mosquitoes infected with West Nile virus in Hemet and Murrieta, and in the Lake Skinner and Nuevo areas - - the second time infected mosquitoes have been found this year in Riverside County, according to health officials. The mosquitoes were found during routine surveillance by the county Department of Environmental Health's vector-control staff. The California Department of Public Health confirmed the presence of the virus Friday. No cases of West Nile virus among humans have been reported in 2008. In 2007, 16 human cases were reported in Riverside County. The virus is transmitted to people and animals by bites from infected mosquitoes. A mosquito first acquires the infection by feeding on a bird with the virus in its blood. The virus is most prevalent from May to October, when mosquitoes are abundant. The California Department of Public Health monitors birds for the virus. Anyone who finds crows, ravens, magpies or jays that have been dead less than 24 hours is asked to call toll-free to (877) WNV-BIRD. A slew of other West Nile cases have been reported in Southern California, but some fish may provide help in fighting the disease. The Last Days Signs - The End Times - Are Upon The Earth! =========================== Salt Lake County detects West Nile virus in mosquitoes West Nile virus has been detected in Salt Lake County, less than a week after Kane County reported a crow had tested positive for the virus. Salt Lake Valley Health Department reported Wednesday that the virus was found in six of its 10 mosquito test pools in wet lands outside Salt Lake City. The Salt Lake City Mosquito Abatement District will begin spraying over the next few days. Public health officials said residents need to do their part, too, including wearing mosquito repellent from dusk until dawn. Other prevention measures include: - Wearing long-sleeved shirts and pants while outdoors, - Removing standing water in tires or other containers to eliminate mosquito breeding areas. Most people infected with the virus will have no symptoms. Some will develop flu-like symptoms. And less than 1 percent could develop a headache, paralysis and other brain or spinal cord illnesses. An American crow was found dead in South San Francisco on May 15, but health officials only obtained the test results recently. ------------------- Hong Kong finds bird flu in poultry Hong Kong has found the feared H5N1 bird flu virus at a poultry stall in one of the territory's many markets and ordered the killing 2,700 birds. They are working to discover the source, and there has been no human infection detected. ------------------- Eastern equine encephalitis found in Florida Local health officials are urging residents and visitors to the area to take steps to protect themselves against mosquitoes, after a case of Eastern equine encephalitis was confirmed in Jackson County. Eastern equine encephalitis does not occur as frequently in people as West Nile virus, but nonetheless poses a serious health risk. This is the 23rd case found in the state this year. .............................. UN: New HIV/AIDS infections outpaces drug treatment Despite a stepped up global battle against AIDS, the numbers of people newly infected with HIV are far and away outpacing the numbers beginning antiretroviral drug treatments, U.N. officials said. Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon, opening several days of U.N. debate on AIDS prevention, told world leaders that 2.5 million people became infected with HIV last year compared with 1 million who started using important antiretroviral drugs. "Unless greater and swifter advances are made in reaching those who need essential services, the epidemic's burden on households, communities and societies will continue to mount," Ban said. Some 2.1 million people died of AIDS last year and at least 33 million people world wide have the HIV infection, according to U.N. figures. In addition, people with weakened immune systems from HIV are up to 50 times more likely to develop tuberculosis, U.N. officials say. Health officials are drawing up guidelines to spell out the threat posed by strains of the MRSA superbug and a related bug MSSA. They warn that these bacteria produce a poison called Panton-Valentine leukocidin, or PVL, and thrive in schools, nurseries and gym changing rooms. Most victims are infected through cuts, grazes and wounds where the bugs cause painful boils up to four inches across that can lead to blood poisoning and potentially fatal pneumonia. CDC: Salmonella Epidemic spread to 16 states Salmonella food poisoning first linked to uncooked tomatoes has spread to 16 states, federal health officials said Saturday. Investigations by the Texas and New Mexico Departments of Health and the U.S. Indian Health Service have tied 56 cases in Texas and 55 in New Mexico to raw, uncooked, tomatoes. "We're seeing a steady increase," Deborah Busemeyer, New Mexico Department of Health communications director, said Saturday. An additional 50 people have been sickened by the same Salmonella "Saintpaul" infection in Arizona, California, Colorado, Connecticut, Idaho, Illinois, Indiana, Kansas, Oklahoma, Oregon, Utah, Virginia, Washington and Wisconsin, the federal Centers for Disease Control and Prevention reported. Deadly vaccine in China 6 people have died after being injected with immune globulin, a human antibody. The company that sold the drugs was ordered to stop selling them. Immune globulin is an antibody extracted from blood plasma that can be injected into muscles to protect against hepatitis A, and Rhesus disease in pregnant women. China's pharmaceutical industry is highly lucrative but spottily regulated, enticing some to try to cash in by substituting fake or substandard ingredients. The death toll through May 3 was up 24 per cent from 90 fatalities during the same period in 2007. The health department's National Epidemiology Center also recorded a total of 10,841 cases of dengue infections, 35.6 per cent more than last year. Terrence Tumpey of the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention said more than one H7 strain of the flu virus has evolved traits needed to easily infect humans While the H5N1 strain is considered the most deadly strain, it is not yet able to move from person to person. A 2003 case in New York, however, showed the H7N2 virus can replicate in the respiratory tract of mammals. A study with ferrets suggests the strain can be passed from animal to animal, the newspaper said. Researchers said the findings suggest the virus could be acquiring an ability to bind to sugars on the cells of the human windpipe.

The current warning on Roche Laboratories' Tamiflu (generic name oseltamivir) urges close monitoring of flu patients, particularly children, for "increased risk of self injury and confusion shortly after taking Tamiflu." The panel recommended that this warning be strengthened to say that "in some cases, these behaviors resulted in serious injuries, including death, in adult and pediatric patients." The label of Glaxo SmithKline's Relenza (generic name zanamivir), the panel said, should be strengthened to mention "reports of hallucinations, delirium and abnormal behavior." ***WATCHMAN... The illness struck about 50 people and had symptoms similar of a stomach flu. They think some attendees may have been exposed before the convention, and then infected others through personal contact and access to food. ................................. Lead exposure leads to criminal behavior According to two new studies, children exposed to lead early in life are likely to develop criminal behavior in adulthood. Those with the highest blood levels of lead during childhood had the smallest brain volume or 1.2% smaller than in participants with average lead levels. The higher the blood lead level at any time in childhood increases the likelihood of being arrested. The studies also found that, despite the efforts of the federal government and cities to minimize exposure to lead, this continues to be a problem. Archived from NEWS+VIEWS page MAY 27, 2008 -------- Coxsackievirus B1 A virus that typically causes a mild infection killed at least five babies in the United States last year. The virus was involved in an unusually high number of severe infections in newborns last year, but the CDC said it was not certain of the reason. Coxsackievirus B1, or CVB1, is part of a group of viruses called enteroviruses. It usually does not cause serious infections but can cause more severe and potentially life-threatening illness in newborns. Tens of thousands of children are infected with this virus annually. People should probably not be very concerned about the virus as there is no sign it has mutated into a more dangerous form. The virus killed two babies in California and one in Illinois, Colorado and New Mexico. There may have been more deaths that that the CDC did not know about.

Galaise-Séguin's illness began as a stomach flu .......................
Tulsa's medical community is asking questions after some concerns a Green Country man may have died of mad cow disease, medically known as Variant CJD. It was first reported last month that a man was admitted to Saint John Medical Center with a mysterious illness. He died one week later. The man's son said his dad did die of CJD, which is often referred to as the human form of mad cow disease. And that he may not be the only victim in that Creek County town. Specialists at the Mayo Clinic in Minnesota diagnosed Creutzfeldt-Jakob Disease or CJD. Tulsa neurologist Doctor Rodney Myers says the disease attacks the nervous system, causing holes in the brain until it looks like a sponge, which causes devastating and fatal effects. “The person will have problems walking, with jerking of extremities and dementia.” Dr. Myers says the disease is difficult to trace because symptoms may not show up for years. “The incubation period is so long, we could have a million people infected right now and wouldn't know it for another decade.” But once symptoms show up, CJD is a quick killer. ***WATCHMAN... FIRST HUMAN CASE OF BIRD FLU REPORTED IN BANGLADESH The first human case of bird flu has been reported in Bangladesh. Mahmudur Rahman, an official with the country's health ministry Thursday said a child has been diagnosed with the deadly virus. The child has received treatment, and officials say his condition has improved. Bird flu was first detected in Bangladesh in 2007. In recent months, authorities have slaughtered more than a million chickens, after the virus was found in at least 47 of the country's 64 districts. Bangladesh's poultry industry is one of the worlds largest. The bird flu outbreak has led to the closure of more than 40 percent of the nation's poultry farms, leaving more than half a million people unemployed. Bird flu was also detected in neighboring India's West Bengal state earlier this year. No human cases have been detected there so far ...................................... SUPERBUGS MRSA AND CLOSTRIDIUM DIFFICILE KILLING RECORD NUMBERS OF PATIENTS Record number of patients are dying in hospitals and nursing homes after contracting superbugs, new figures show. MRSA and Clostridium difficile were linked to more than 8,000 deaths in England and Wales in 2006, up from 5,300 the previous year. The first ever breakdown of deaths from both infections by location released by the Office for National Statistics shows that the vast majority of patients died from the bugs in hospital. The deadly infections also killed small numbers of patients in nursing homes and hospices. In total there were 6,424 deaths from C difficile in all three locations in 2006, almost double the 3,719 deaths caused by the infection in 2005. MRSA was responsible for 1,625 deaths, up from 1,621 the previous year… More than 1,100 hospitals, hospices and nursing homes had at least one death from C difficile in the last five years and more than 900 had at least one death from MRSA. The Office for National Statistics cautioned that many of the hospitals who recorded large numbers of deaths from both infections were also more likely to have high patient numbers generally. More than 6,000 people died in 2006 after becoming infected with the gut infection in hospitals across England and Wales - a more than four-fold rise compared with 2001 figures, the Office of National Statistics will say. Meanwhile, the number of deaths linked to MRSA rose by more than one third, with the infection mentioned on almost 1,700 death certificates in 2006. It has already sold to several governments to stockpile in preparation for a pandemic. Prepandrix, which targets the H5N1 virus, is the first vaccine to receive a license for pre-pandemic use in all 27 European Union member states. Switzerland has ordered 8 million doses, enough to cover the country's entire population. The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services has ordered 27.5 million doses. Finland and several other European countries have also placed orders. "This vaccine marks a significant step in the world's ability to cope with an influenza pandemic," said Glaxo CEO Jean-Pierre Garnier. However, Glaxo is just one of several pharmaceutical companies, including Novartis SA and Sanofi Aventis, developing vaccines against H5N1 bird flu. Experts believe H5N1, which has killed at least 241 people worldwide, is the most likely candidate to mutate into a pandemic virus. Since late 2003, the virus has been circulating in Asia, Europe and Africa, and several distinct H5N1 strains have arisen. Glaxo has said its vaccine works against these other versions of the virus as well, announcing study results last year showing it even reacts against the Indonesian type of H5N1, a genetically different virus. If a vaccine protects against different H5N1 strains, people could theoretically be pre-vaccinated before getting a booster shot with a new formulation containing the pandemic strain once the global outbreak strikes. But if it is another flu subtype that causes the next pandemic, like H7 or H9, which have also caused human bird flu cases, vaccines created using the H5N1 strain will probably be useless. The license from the EMEA equated to formal validation of the quality and efficiency of the vaccine. Glaxo has agreed to donate 50 million doses of the vaccine to the World Health Organization to create a pandemic vaccine stockpile for poor countries. The vaccines will be delivered over a three-year period and should provide enough doses for 25 million people as each person needs two shots. Tick vaccine for Euro 2008 If you are a soccer fan going to watch Euro 2008 it could be worth having a vaccination to prevent catching a little known, but potentially fatal illness that is spread by ticks, a leading scientist warned. The symptoms are very flu-like. In 2007, the number of tick-borne encephalitis (TBE) cases requiring hospital treatment in Europe rose 30% to 13,000 cases, with evidence pointing to warmer temperatures caused by global warming helping to spread the disease. Endemic in 27 countries across Europe, including joint Euro 2008 hosts Switzerland and Austria, TBE can lead to paralysis, coma and in 1 to 2% of cases, death. As many as 600 people could be in danger of catching TBE, with fans particularly at risk if they are camping or go hiking when they are not supporting their team. They hailed the swift identification of the pathogen that causes acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS) and the advent of the "triple cocktail" of drugs in the mid-1990s that transformed a death sentence into a manageable disease. HIV has shape-shifting properties and a stealthy invasion of immune cells. "We still don't completely understand the various forms of the virus. It's more complicated for us than we thought," said France's Luc Montagnier, who with Robert Gallo of the United States identified HIV as the cause of AIDS. AIDS emerged as a new disease in 1981, initially among US homosexuals. Today, the disease has claimed around 25 million lives and another 33 million are infected. Gallo attacked what he called a worrying tendency to sideline AIDS as a manageable disease in the age of antiretroviral drugs. Beijing Health Bureau spokeswoman Deng Xiaohong said a 13-month-old boy from the city's northern Changping District died on the way to a hospital on Sunday. Hubei province to the south also confirmed the death of a toddler from hand foot and mouth, taking the nationwide toll to 42. The spokeswoman said the child in Beijing had tested positive for enterovirus 71 (EV71), a virus that has caused the majority of the deaths in the latest outbreak, which started weeks ago in the eastern province of Anhui's Fuyang city. Deng also said another child had died of the disease in a Beijing hospital, but that case would be recorded in neighboring Hebei province, where the child contracted the disease. The number of fatalities recorded from January 1 to April 5 was 46 per cent higher than 74 deaths in the same period last year. Health Secretary Francisco Duque said he has ordered all department personnel to step up the campaign to urge residents to clean up their homes and environment. Mystery Disease Puts Canadian Train in Quarantine A train in Canada with about 280 people on board has been put under quarantine, after one passenger died and several others reported flu-like symptoms. The authorities say they do not believe there is a connection between the death and the illnesses. The train was traveling from Vancouver to Toronto when a woman in her 60s fell ill and died on Friday morning. The authorities say they are keeping passengers and crew on the train while they await the results of tests. The train was stopped in the tiny hamlet of Foleyet in northern Ontario and surrounded by emergency services, who evacuated the local station. A second passenger was airlifted to hospital, where she was diagnosed with a respiratory illness and is said to be in a stable condition. ............................................ 77 more US hepatitis cases may trace to clinic Seventy-seven more people who were treated at a Las Vegas outpatient clinic have been diagnosed with hepatitis C, health officials said. Authorities can't say for sure how the 77 people were infected, said Brian Labus, senior epidemiologist with the Southern Nevada Health District. But they know each was treated from March 2004 to Jan. 11 this year at the Endoscopy Center of Southern Nevada. "We know they didn't have a positive test before they went to the clinic, and now they're positive," Labus said. The reports bring the number of cases linked to clinics run by the same group of doctors to 85. In the eight cases identified earlier, seven were linked to the Endoscopy Center of Southern Nevada. Canadian Press said the train had some 290 people on board and was on a cross-Canada route between Vancouver and Toronto. One person died, and several were ill with flu-like symptoms. The train was in quarantine in the small northern Ontario community of Foleyet, and nobody except emergency personnel were being allowed aboard.

DIFFICILE LINKED TO DOZENS OF DEATHS AT ONTARIO HOSPITAL Ontario's health minister plans to make it mandatory for hospitals to report cases of Clostridium difficile to the province after a Burlington hospital revealed that dozens of people had died in an outbreak of the bacteria. George Smitherman made the announcement Wednesday after officials at Joseph Brant Memorial Hospital released the results of an investigation into a 20-month outbreak. The external study found that the bacteria killed 30 patients and contributed to the deaths of 46 others. Earlier, the hospital said 12 people had died of the bacteria. ‘It first came to our attention in late January [2007] that we had something different happening here with C. difficile than we'd seen before,’ hospital president and CEO Don Scott told CBC News. In 2007, Burlington hospital had an overall rate of C. difficile of 2 infections per 200 patients, twice the rate of other Canadian hospitals. In a news release, Scott stated that the results of the review have ‘saddened all of us.’ The outbreak lasted from May 1, 2006, to Dec. 31, 2007. C. difficile causes swelling of the intestines and diarrhea, as well as fever and vomiting. The hospital said it hasn't had a new case of C. difficile since April 15, 2008. ‘The status at this time is certainly [C. difficile] is well under control,’ said Scott. Patient rooms are now wiped clean twice a day, and the hospital has spent $1 million to hire cleaning staff and switch to more effective disinfectants. Dr. Michael Gardam, the head of infection control at the University Health Network who was brought in to help control the outbreak, said the bacteria went undetected for far too long and then wasn't treated aggressively enough. ‘In this particular case, several months went by before senior administration understood that they were in an outbreak,’ said Gardam. ‘My concern is there's many hospitals that we have no idea what their rates are,’ he added…” ............................ Deadly Virus spreads across Australia THE potentially deadly mosquito-borne Murray Valley encephalitis (MVE) virus has been found in the South Australian Riverland. Health authorities said testing of local birds, following the discovery of the virus in Victoria and New South Wales over summer, had returned positive results for MVE. Birds were considered a good indicator of the presence of MVE because they had the ability to carry the virus without developing symptoms. SA Health communicable disease control branch director Ann Koehler said the presence of the virus in birds would not necessarily have an impact on human health. She was admitted to hospital but died from multi-organ failure 16 days later. An inquest earlier this week ruled that she died of natural causes and yesterday her husband Suresh, 51, said: "She went into hospital with an ear infection, which is not life-threatening and then suddenly she is in a critical condition." The inquest heard that Mrs Pancholi was admitted to Leicester Royal Infirmary in September 2004 suffering from an ear infection caught after an operation to repair a perforated eardrum. Cases of the bug, known as Panton-Valentine leukocidin (PVL), have more than doubled since 2005, official figures show. Doctors are particularly concerned that many young people could have been exposed to the infection in their school playgrounds or in local parks. Children are especially vulnerable to PVL, a member of the Staphylococcus aureas family of infections, and it can combine with MRSA, the deadly hospital superbug. Once contracted, the infection acts quickly to kill off white blood cells, an essential part of the body's immune system. The bug can also enter a patient's skeleton, where it becomes particularly hard to cure. Doctors often have to treat the disease by removing infected bone. The drill began Friday and involved a simulated outbreak of a pandemic of the disease. The exercise, which ends Sunday, began with a man contracting the disease on the resort island of Bali and will culminate with officials trying to prevent infected travelers from leaving the country and taking the virus overseas. Most bird flu cases involve contact with infected poultry, but experts fear the virus could eventually mutate and be spread from human contact. Bird flu has hit Indonesia harder than any other country in the world, and its 107 deaths from the disease account for nearly half of the global total ...................... FLU/MRSA DOCS FEAR DEADLY COMBO OF FLU, MRSA One is a viral illness responsible for an estimated 35,000 deaths every year. The other is a potentially deadly superbug, a horrifying legacy of antibiotic overuse that is now resistant to almost every treatment today's doctors can throw at it. Even on their own, infection with either influenza or methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) can lead to a grave situation. But now, health officials are keeping an eye out for an even more harrowing threat -- simultaneous infection with both diseases. And they say that, in children at least, these cases of co-incident infection appear to be on the rise. So far, what the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention has learned about the potential link between flu and MRSA in young patients is disturbing. According to an official health advisory issued Jan. 30, between Oct. 1, 2006, and Sept. 30, 2007, the agency received a total of 73 reports of child deaths due to influenza. In 22 of these cases, the children were also infected with some form of the Staph bug, mostly MRSA. This compares with only three such cases of co-infection during the same period in 2005 and 2006, and just one such case identified in 2004-2005. And on Friday, the Boston Globe reported that Massachusetts health officials have linked MRSA to two recent deaths in children from the flu, renewing concerns over such a surge. It is not the first time that viral and bacterial infections have gone hand-in-hand, notes Dr. Jonathan C. Weissler, chief of medicine at University of Texas Southwestern University Hospitals in Dallas. ‘It is well known that community-acquired Staph pneumonia is much more common in patients who have influenza,’ he says. ‘This has not changed.’ But when it does happen, the results can be disastrous. Infectious disease experts say spikes in this kind of co-incidence of influenza and drug-resistant bugs have happened in the past, with devastating results even for many healthy individuals… Contracting both the flu and MRSA at the same time is far more than simple coincidence, scientists believe. Rather, they suspect that the damage inflicted on the lungs and airways by the flu virus allows MRSA germs to sneak into vulnerable tissues and gain a foothold. They said the illness was a new disorder that causes a range of symptoms, from inflammation of the spinal cord to mild weakness, fatigue, numbness and tingling in the arms and legs. "As far as we are aware it is a brand new disorder,'' said Daniel Lachance of the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minnesota, who presented his findings at the American Academy of Neurology meeting in Chicago.
