Some examples: • When RNC Chairman Michael S. Steele and colleagues took several dozen party donors on a retreat last August to Jackson Hole, Wyo., golf and tennis fees were paid, whitewater rafting and trout fishing guides were contracted, and limo drivers and photographers were hired. • Last month, the RNC spent $260,476 on a single meeting in Hawaii and $14,937 on Dallas Cowboys football tickets. It also paid hefty cancellation fees to Ritz Carlton and Four Seasons hotels. • The RNC's expenditures for "office supplies" in the period through February topped $773,000, according to a tally, including jelly beans for Steele's office and thousands of dollars' worth of liquor and wine. • To finance an RNC event last November in Beverly Hills, Calif., the committee spent $717 on limousines, $11,076 at Spago restaurant and $4,583 at the Beverly Wilshire Hotel. • The RNC spent $4,266 at a Los Angeles sports ticket broker called StubHub, but listed the expense as "lodging," and $923 at the Little Door restaurant, but listed that expense as "office supplies." • In December, the RNC also reported spending $496 for "meals" at Henri Bendel, a posh New York women's clothing store. Bendel's personnel say the store's restaurant closed four months earlier. • The RNC also listed $282 in "meals" at a fly-fishing outfitter in Boca Grande, Fla., that has no restaurant. Wines the committee bought for $982 from a Vermont vineyard were listed as "office supplies," as were smaller amounts spent at PetSmart and a men's clothier.
Archived from NEWS+VIEWS page APRIL 9, 2010-------- US military can't find its copy of Iraq killing video of Reuters employees THE US military said today it can't find its copy of a video that shows two employees of the Reuters news agency being killed by Army helicopters in 2007, after a leaked version circulated the internet and renewed questions about the attack. Captain Jack Hanzlik, a spokesman for US Central Command, said that the military has not been able to locate the video within its files after being asked to authenticate the version available online. "We had no reason to hold the video at (Central Command), nor did the higher headquarters in Iraq," Capt Hanzlik said.

Whitehall officials drafted the "contract with the Iraqi people" as a way of signaling to dissenters in Iraq that an overthrow of Saddam would be supported by Britain. It promised aid, oil contracts, debt cancellations and trade deals once the dictator had been removed. Tony Blair's team saw it as a way of creating regime change in Iraq even before the 9/11 attack on New York. The document, headed "confidential UK/US eyes", was finalized on 11 June 2001 and approved by ministers. It has not been published by the Iraq inquiry but a copy has been obtained and can be revealed for the first time. During his evidence to the inquiry last week, Mr. Blair said it was only after 9/11 that serious attention was given to removing Saddam. The information on AbdulMutallab had been sent to CIA headquarters in Langley, Virginia, but it sat there for five weeks and was not disseminated, the source said. The bureaucratic finger pointing erupted shortly after President Obama blamed "a mix of human and systemic failures" for the incident and directed that preliminary findings into the matter be delivered to the White House

Rather than comply with a court order to provide lawyers in the case with what the U.S. government says is classified information, the government has agreed to settle to end the 15-year-old suit. A close review of the case suggests that the Justice Department may have also decided to pay off the plaintiff in order to quash the series of damaging legal rulings issued by the influential judge overseeing the case that would have forced them to disclose the classified information. Those decisions may have a bearing on the “state secrets privilege” that the Bush and Obama administrations have used to try and thwart a high-profile lawsuit in California over illegal wiretapping conducted in the war on terror. The plea bargain, which included an anticipated eight charges, included the prosecution's suggestion that the crimes are punishable by 27 to 33 months in prison. It was designed to resolve three pending federal criminal trials. Kerik, who was police commissioner when New York was attacked on 9/11, won glowing reviews for his leadership. He eventually was nominated for the Homeland Security post in 2004 but withdrew as corruption allegations mounted. The lies to the White House occurred during that vetting process. Stuart Henderson, a former detective chief superintendent with Lothian and Borders Police, led the Lockerbie Incident Control Center from 1988 until 1992. He told: “We submitted eight other names of people that we wished to interview that were strong suspects. Unfortunately, we never got that opportunity. Is Still Cagey About Oswald Mystery For six years, the agency has fought in federal court to keep secret hundreds of documents from 1963, when an anti-Castro Cuban group it paid clashed publicly with the soon-to-be assassin, Lee Harvey Oswald. The C.I.A. says it is only protecting legitimate secrets. But because of the agency’s history of stonewalling assassination inquiries, even researchers with no use for conspiracy thinking question its stance. Joannides, the case officer who oversaw the dissident Cubans in 1963. In 1978, the agency made Mr. Joannides the liaison to the House Select Committee on Assassinations — but never told the committee of his earlier role. Sullivan ridiculed the government’s arguments as a “Daily Show defense,” making clear that he did not believe that the fact that disclosure would prove embarrassing to a political figure was a valid consideration. Still, the judge’s ruling excepted parts of the interview relating to Cheney’s communications with President Bush about the decision to declassify parts of a 2002 National Intelligence Estimate that were then leaked as part of an effort to disparage Ambassador Joseph Wilson. Study Exposes How Taxpayers Are Subsidizing Bank of America, Citigroup, Wells Fargo and Other Large Banks One of the key terms to come out of the nation’s economic meltdown has been “too big to fail.” The government has funneled billions of dollars to large financial firms by arguing that their collapse would deal an irreparable blow to economic recovery. A new study has calculated the tab of the “too big to fail” approach, and it amounts to a far larger taxpayer-funded subsidy than previously thought. The Center for Economic and Policy Research says the bailout has allowed “too big to fail” banks to pay significantly lower interest rates than those paid by smaller banks.

His brother Jesse, a Salt Lake City attorney, has accused federal agents of wrongly suspecting Kenney of being John Doe No. 2. Ever since the bombing, Trentadue has been fighting the Bureau and Justice Department in one lawsuit after another to try and figure out what happened to his brother. Now his search has at last borne some fruit. As the Press reported, the government has released a set of surveillance tapes filmed moments before the bomb went off. When Trentadue looked at footage from the various cameras around the site, he said the tapes had a blank spot in the minutes before the blast—eliminating imagery of the truck carrying the bomb and people in the vehicle. Trentadue concludes that key parts of the tapes have been edited out

Employed as a prison guard at the Idaho Maximum Security Institution in 2007, Timothy Ryan Gilligan, by his own admission, repeatedly had sexual relations with an inmate.Earlier this month, Gilligan was arraigned on a charge of felonious sexual misconduct. Thanks to the inexplicable leniency of the prosecution and the unwonted generosity of the Idaho Sex Offender Classification Board, Gilligan will not have to register as a sex offender. Nor will he face prosecution on the sex charge. In fact, there's a very good chance he won't serve any prison time. The companies provided interrogators at the prison at the height of the abuses there. The suit alleges that employees of the companies conspired with U.S. Army reservist Charles Graner, who was convicted of prisoner abuse on January 14, 2005 and is currently serving 10 years at Fort Leavenworth, and others to torture prisoners at Abu Ghraib. The Lake of the Ozarks Watershed Alliance tested the lake in May and discovered unsafe levels of E. coli in the popular tourist lake. The volunteers gave their report to the Department of Natural Resources but the agency did not release it until late June. Attorney General Chris Koster is looking into whether the environmental officials violated the state's "Sunshine Law" by delaying its release. Although the levels were higher than allowed by the Environmental Protection Agency, state health records show no E. coli infections at the lake. However, a Sunrise Beach man said he was hospitalized for three days in mid-May with an E. coli infection and that he swims in the lake every day. In an interview with the Associated Press, Hayden said that top members of Congress were kept well informed all along the way, notwithstanding protests from some that they were kept in the dark.
