Rev Grandville M. Rayl, Th.D., D.D. Founder & Late President of the Association of the International Gospel Assemblies, Inc.
Four years have passed since the November day that our late founder and President, Dr. Grandville M. Rayl, went to be with our Lord. Since then there have been major, tragic happenings changing our nation and the world. If Brother Rayl had seen these things come upon our nation it would have been heartbreaking for him. Also I believe it would have inspired him to write about it. He had some deep concerns, as other ministers had, about the direction in which our nation was going with immorality and liberalism being the order of the day. As a reflection of this, we thought it would be appropriate to reprint a sermon which he wrote in 1986, "America Before God." Each year we dedicate our first quarter magazine the "International Gospel Herald" to Brother Rayl's memory. Not only for the purpose of preserving his legacy of service to our Association but also as a means of briefly touching on the history and founding vision of our Association. We believe it is important to inform our membership about the founding of the AIGA and something about its history that involved Brother Rayl's ministry for so many years. During the early years of our Association it seemed that the people loved to fellowship. The fellowship meetings, youth rallies, conventions, and especially the Annual Camp Meetings were always well attended. This kind of fellowship promoted growth and brought members closer together in brotherly love. Brother Rayl once stated, "I have been asked by different people down through the years... 'What is your vision or goal for the Association?'... My vision has always been to build an association of Spirit-filled Christians and Ministers into a body of people that will love each other with a Godly Love, always holding each other up in love and never condemning one another, not speaking evil of or criticizing each other." Our General Secretary was reminiscing a few days ago about how much Brother Rayl enjoyed those Annual Camp Meetings. The 1964 and 1965 Camp-Meetings were held at Doe Run, Missouri at a Camp-Ground owned by our Association. There was no tabernacle or dormitories, so the cooking was done at a house on the property and those who attended slept on army cots under two large tents that wer set up as men's and women's dormitories. At that time the conventions were held separately from the Camp Meetings. From July 1966 through the summer of 1981, the camp Meetings were held at Sunset Hills Pentecostal Campground near Edwardsville, Illinois. Eventually the conventions were also held along with the Camp-Meeting. Camp-Meeting and the preparation for it was a very busy time. We did most of the work ourselves, painting signs and banners, buying food, and various other things that needed to be done. Brother Rayl, Brother Gus Kircher and some of the other AIGA ministers and officials from Saint Louis would put up the signs and banners and get ready for Camp Meeting. When the people would start coming in he would come back telling who had showed up already. It was an exciting time. Sister Rayl did a lot of the work, also, such as cooking and helping the young people, amoung other things. These Camp Meetings were a great success and eventually grew to around 1,700 in attendance from all over the United States and several other countries. A closeness grew among our members who had the opportunity to spend this time of fellowship.
